off-roading the yz450

Has anyone who rides a new yz450 done much trail riding with it. I am interested especially in the gearing and any changes made to help the bottom pull,..such as adding a 13 countershaft sprocket, etc.. My biggest concern is that it would kill the top speed for starts and straights. Let me know what you guys have come up with.

I running the stock gears for now and have had no real problems.  My biggest problem was riding in too low of a gear.  Some areas that I ride you never get out of second gear.

so it would have to be a pretty tight section to notice the tall first gear,,...also maybe one tooth on front wouldn't give too low of a top speed at all if you never really get up into fourth now.

On a offroad trail do you really have to worry about top speed that much?..... I would say you could gear it to where your primary gears would be 2nd and 3rd (as with most bikes) the jump from 1st to 2nd would just be more noticeable w/ the four speed. Really it wouldn't matter, just reserve 1st. for Real nasty stuff. If I was gonna do gearing changes I would mess w/ the rear sproket. Changing the front is like changing close to 2 1/2 teeth on the rear.

my biggest concern is that it wouldn'd be possible to have straight away speed for field sections or long starts, but also be good for the tight stuff, often the races around here have both. What do you think

At the hare scrambles I've been to I was on a 125 w/ gearing 2 teeth larger on the rear and would never have a problem w/ running out of gears. If you go over the specs for the new 450 it has roughly the same ratios for 4th gearing as the 426 did for 5th gear. Go ahead and set it up for the tighter stuff and dont worry about top speed you'd have to either have some REAL long straight away(ie: cornfields) or be MUCH faster than yours truely in the short straights. I dont know if you've already bought the 450 yet, but if you haven't you might want to check into the WR it still has a 5 speed instead of a 4 speed.
