I just bought a 2000 wr400f and I cannot get it to gun with the choke off. What I have done, I removed the card, cleaned it checked the jetting, all stock except the needle position was on 4. I moved it back to three. Cleaned the air cleaner and checked for any intake leaks.
When the bike starts it idles fast, well that is because the idle is turned almost all the way up. and it still will not run with the choke off. I have also ran the bike so it is good and hot and it will just die out when the choke is pushed in. need help, I am at a loss.

Check the carb slide, a known problem.

what is the problem with the slide? and what is the fix?

lso make sure valves are in spec

It is easy to put the slide in upside down (or maybe it was backward?) from what I have read. Also, depending on pipe and weather conditions, you might need to bump the pilot jet up one. Check the pilot screw as well. Roughly 1.5 turns out is where it should be. Any more than 2-2.5 and the pilot jet needs to be increased a size.

There was a problem with an internal slide stop(?) setting on my '99 that prevented it from idling - a tech bulletin was issued. I have a copy on my computer at home. The bulletin used to be on Thumpertalk.com but I can't find it anymore. Email me at brian4wd@hotmail.com and I'll send it to you.

Thanks for all the help What I found was that the carb slide front piece was installed upside down. Now I am wondering if this is why the guy sold it so cheap.
