The best bikes to buy are the RM's and YZ's for those years at least. YZ if you choose the 2000 and the RM for 2001. 2001 Was a very good year for RM. But the final decision is up to you.

I myself would go with the YZ125 I have heard nothing but good about it.

BUY BLUE!!!!cant go wrong....although since u are buying used(i assume),look at both brands and buy the most well kept and maintained....don't be afraid to ask tons of questions about the upkeep performed on it!...good luck!

MX magazines make a living by picking out the most insignificant details between different brands and choosing a winner. Go to several races and you'll note that not all heats are won by a single brand. That is because it is still more important TO ride rather than WHAT you ride. I have ridden most brands and my lap times are not enough different to make me change. I think Shane Watts proved it best when he won GNCC races on every model KTM in 2000. I am 200A and I would bet Shane would beat me on a pogo stick!
The things to look for between equal bikes usually have nothing to do with the bike at all. Are you happy with your dealer, ie does he treat you right with discounts etc and is he nearby? I used to ride Husqvarna but had to go 2 hours away to see my dealer. Do you have parts that can be reused? My big tank, triple clamps and bars from my '96 YZ125 has also been on my '98 and is now on my '01. My pipe, wheels and some other parts also came from my '96 to my '98. Does he race too? It sucks if he doesn't know what you need. All this is what you should be thinking about once you decide to go 125.

I vote for the RM I just had an '02 YZ 125 and after owning it for 9 months I got the chance to spend a few days dailing in the jetting on my buds pracitally new '01 RM 125. Things the blew me away about the RM was the very light clutch pull its much lighter than the YZ's even with my complete hinson setup. It shifts much smoother and slicker and its also has plusher suspenion and I had my YZ's revalved to be plusher. The RM also rev's out higher unlike my YZ when I would over rev it, it would noticably flatten out compared to the RM. The RM is also slimmer and feels much lighter it felt like it was 10 lbs lighters but its only like a pound difference. I really like that especially being short that gave me more confience in whipping the bike around. The RM's egro's a better feeling like the seat to peg distance nice and comfy. I woulda like the bike alot more if I would of had my fav bars on it. When it came time to give it back to my friend I didn't want to I conned my way into getting just a few more laps on it cause I had to make sure it was "fined tuned" in fact I'm planning on getting an '03 and I've been riding at '03 YZ250F that should say alot. The RM is awesome bike its under rated badly but if you get the YZ its a sweet ride too.

Any of the KTM line from 98 to present, the 97 to present YZ line and probably the best would be the YZ250F but I'm not sure about the reliability of a used one.

I vote against the 250F I have an '03 and I'm 5'5" and I find the bike to be rather tall feeling. My friends can barely tell when i'm standing or sitting on the bike. The extra weight of the bike will work against you I don't think your quite tall enough. I takes me a quite a bit of leverage to wrestle the 250F around and I can barely lift it. It takes me quite a bit of heft to get the bike on to my stand I normally have to have someone slide it under the bike. Granted its got the widest power band compared to a 125 but if you have no confidence in throwing the bike around what good is that extra power gonna do you. A 250F would not be a good choice for you I would compare the size of the bike to a 250 2 stroke and it handles more like one. Its in between a 125 and a 250, but it weighs as much as a 250 2 stroke. I still think a 125 would be a much better bike for you add in the fact that the only time you can race it against 125's is on a MX track you won't be able to race 200 under class for enduro's/harescrambles on it you'd have to race in 250 4 stroke and pretty much everyone else in that class has a YZF/WR now. Not to mention you'd have to buy a spark arrestor for it and that would be easy another $200+ for a good quite setup and with a 125 it would just take a silencer change like $140 max.

Just a thought! Have you considered the KDX 200? It is a little heavier than a 125 but would work great for what you ride.

kstarr -
this is my broken reccord like advice to everyone. here i will yell. nothing personal. its for effect:
IF YOU AREN'T MXing, DON'T BUY A FRIGGIN' MX BIKE!
there are many, many woods/trail/enduro bikes out there and their engines, suspensions, and chasis are dailed in for trail use. you will go faster without the harsh suspension and harsh power delivery of a 125 MXer.
one exception to this rule, and a bike i reccomend to you, is the yzf250, or better yet, the WR250. and no, they are not free of 4 stroke quirks. they are at the same time faster and more managible than the 125's.
MXPIMP is right about them being tall, but any good shop can take a not-too-detrimental inch out of the suspention for you, and you can cut the seat foam for another inch or so, bringing the whole thing down to 34.5 inches(+ or -). OR, i happen to know that both Kawasaki and KTM make very nice, very fast, non-MX 2 strokes, which also can me lowered.
at 5'1 i gotta tell ya you should have a good long look at the KX/RM100 rather than a full sized bike.
point is, if you can possibly help it, do not get an MX bike for a non MX use.

ya ya i know...the KX/RM100 IS an MX bike, but sometimes stature dictates that you make due
