Check this out:

I don't think I'll be planning any trips to New Mexico on a bike!

Thats crazy

It doesn`t even sound constitutional.

Sounds good to me. You don't wear a helmet, YOU ARE an organ donor.

Posted by: OnAnySunday---------------------

What's REALLY ironic is they will ticket you for not wearing a seatbelt in your car here, but they have no mandatory helmet law.
Mebbe they oughta extend the "organ harvest" bill to people who arent wearing their seatbelts too, eh???
What a bunch of < censored > and < double censored >!!!!! :scream:

Posted by: Jaybird---------------------

It will never fly.
Sometimes I wonder just who these &#$^%* legislators think they are. Always trying to run folks lives and make decisions for others.
Hipocritical bass turds.
Ethical and religeous implications, as well as common sense will squash this one.

I thought they said Oregon donors and I was all for it. After all, that's where all the hard core tree huggers from Kali end up moving to!

Posted by: nephron---------------------

I get to take care of the few Renal Transplants and provide dialysis thrice weekly for those waiting for them. There's a serious shortage of organs, and despite the invasion of civil rights here, I'd like to see all folks obligated to donate organs under conditions of brain death. The problem here is the bias toward non-helmet-wearing riders, where they apparently think they'll deter you from an act by threatening to harvest your organs???

Bizarre.

Posted by: XRpredator---------------------

Hell, take what you can outta me when I kick, then chop the rest up and feed me to the hogs. What they don't eat, go ahead and set it aflame and sprinkle me at some tree-huggers so I can make 'em sneeze. It ain't worth nothin' to me any more anyhow.

I wish I could say that this was a great joke perpitrated by the legislature of my resident state, but I fear I can't credit them with the intelligence and wit necessary. Hey, this is America where we are free to hurt ourselves in any manner we see fit. My problem is that in NM we spend too much of our already scarce resources taking care of people as a result of their stupidity, (helmetless riders, heroin addicts, etc.) so I think I understand this particlular legislator's frustration even if I disagree with this bill. I really don't understand the whole wind in the hair thing either, if I rode a street bike here I would want a helmet, and all the body armor i could fit on me, NM drivers are not too good at noticing their surroundings.

NEW MEXICO SENATOR BOWS TO PRESSURE FROM MOTORCYCLISTS, WITHDRAWS OUTRAGEOUS LEGISLATION

PICKERINGTON, OHIO -- The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) has announced that New Mexico state Sen. Allen Hurt (R-Waterflow) has informed the AMA that he will withdraw Senate Bill 239, which could have forced some motorcyclists to become organ donors.

AMA leadership learned of Sen. Hurt’s intentions this afternoon in a message which read, in part: “You win ... I’m pulling New Mexico SB 239.” Late last Thursday, the AMA had expressed its outrage at SB 239, which, if it had passed, would have allowed the harvesting of organs from any motorcyclist who didn't wear a helmet and was declared brain dead as a result of an accident.

“This victory demonstrates how powerful our voice can be when American motorcyclists speak together,” said Sean Maher, AMA Director of State Affairs. "When New Mexico state officials received more than 1,100 e-mails opposing SB 239, they got the message, and Sen. Hurt acted quickly to withdraw his proposal."

The AMA organized opposition to the bill, urging motorcyclists to use the AMA Rapid Response Center -- part of the Association’s website, AMADirectlink.com -- to send a message to Hurt and the New Mexico Legislature’s leadership.

The American Motorcyclist Association, founded in 1924, is a non-profit organization with more than 250,000 members. The Association's purpose is to pursue, protect and promote the interests of motorcyclists, while serving the needs of its members. Great news!

Can't believe that would come out of an (R). Sounds like a typical (D) thing to me.

i was one of the 1100. :thumb:

My displeasure with the legislation does not reflect my thoughts on organ donation. Neph, I am with you..I feel that there needs to be more organs donors for those of us left here on earth that can possibly use them.
I just can't stand the thought of some i'll mannered politician telling me I HAVE to donate anything whatsoever....no matter what they think of me or my habits. They can kiss my donated butt.

Posted by: coleman---------------------

I don't see whats so bad about being an organ donor anyway. I think everyone should be one regardless of whether or not your a motorcyclist.

Posted by: CAL---------------------

I don't agree with governments mandating everything we do, but I have to say, I would have voted for it. Of course I'm going to be an organ doner no matter what, so it has no ill affect to myself. My grandmother's life was saved because of a transplanted kidney from a doner. I'd say go for it. But like OnAnySunday said, take it across the board. Whether everyone likes it, or decides to donate or not...a donated organ is a saved life...whether it be donated by will or against will. My $.02

Posted by: mx547---------------------

i'm an organ donor too but i just don't think it should be mandated. that's a dangerous road to head down.

Posted by: Jaybird---------------------

It sure is, Jay. Goes against the very grain of what the founding fathers of the US had in mind.
CAL, what if a person had religeous convictions that would make donation go against what they believed in? Would it be right or just to mandate they give their organs, no matter the good those organs may or may not do? Do we as mere humans really have the right to choose the final resting place of anothers earthy body for them? I happen to believe that God would look highly on those who donate thier flesh for the better of others, but I also believe that each of us has to make our choices as individuals. Free will is one of our most precious gifts.

I wasn't aware of the fact that there are religions that have such stipulations. I have some other thoughts on that point, but I won't get into it here, because it would turn this thread 180 degrees from where it started.

On the other hand, who in their right mind would ride a motorcycle, at highway speeds, with cars, and NOT wear a helmet? I had this discussion with a friend that used to live in Colorado. She liked not having to wear a helmet on her hubby's harley. Even after watching a fellow rider die in a bike wreck. I don't agree with any government body diddling with my body, but not wearing a helmet? Sounds like Darwin at work.
