Hey, I just bought this bike last week, it is all stock except for the suspension and bars. I am getting a fly wheel for it this week and I was wondering what my next ugrade should be, a pipe or reeds? Which one gives you better bang for your buck and which should I put on first. Any other tips for helpin this bike rip in the woods would be awesome! thanks :D

Personally, I'd skip these and go for Eric Gorr porting first. Absolutely the best bang for the buck. :thumb:

Barkbusters are a must.

There's also some good info in this thread.

Good Luck.

do the eric gorr woods porting or get a 01 cylinder. That is the best mod you can do to your 00. I had a 00 and raced it a million times and the porting isnt very good for tight woods. My brother just got a left over 01 and its like a different motorcycle. I got a leftover 01 CR250 so Im working on setting that up now but definitly look into the porting mods

Posted by: justql---------------------

I had an 00 kx set up for the woods. I think the following mods in the following order. (I did not have mine ported, I didn't think it needed it)

1)Rear Sprocket
2)Pipe
3)Flywheel weight
4)Suspension
5) Porting----Only if I wasn't happy after the other three mods.

Posted by: Senior KX Rider---------------------

The porting is far and away the best bang for the buck. Downtime is the only dis-advantage. The v-force reeds will give you a noticeable boost in bottom end and throttle response. I would spend the money for reeds before a pipe.

Posted by: Nevada Sixx---------------------

are you actually going to be "rippin up the woods" or is your area so tight that have to ride in first and second gear? if that is the case, lower gearing would be a good idea with your flyweight,,,, seems like porting cause jetting confusion to me. I have every mod available on my 125 and lower gearing by far was the most noticeable change.

Posted by: ORLY---------------------

Around here there is a mix of everything, tight tree's and really big open areas. I am pretty happy with my gearing the way it is, 14/48. I just got an 11oz Flywheel weight and it helps a bit, the front end is easier to pick up over logs and ruts. I am still looking for more power everywere though. I am goign to try some reeds, should i get the hole powervalve assembly or just reeds? thanks I really appreciate all the tips.

Posted by: Dan105---------------------

if your looking for more power then dont waste money on porting. I thought you were trying to set it up better for the woods not get more power. 00 kx250 is a fast good engine and im sure you can get even more out of it if you try

Posted by: ORLY---------------------

sorry i should clarify that, i am looking for more useable power, smothing out the power that is there, instead of getting that sudden hard hit of power. For barkbusters, are you guys just running aluminum ones or do you also have roost deflectors, what is your opinion on the acerbris rally's?

Enduro engineering hand guards.

Posted by: fishhead---------------------

ditto on the EE guards, they are made of a good alloy so you can bust bark not the busters. The Acerbis are a little soft for serious pin balling off trees, plus the EE have nice big flares to keep the wind off your hands.

I rode a 00 kx 250 and it was pretty good in the woods. I think the 11 oz flywheel weight, right Pipe for conditions, springs and revalve for rider, and good clean jetting will really wake it up.

I'm not sure where Dan105 is coming from. Eric's Mo Better porting spreads the avaliable power out across the rpm range and is an excellent choice for the woods. The power is smooth, starts pulling early and has no hard, uncontrollable hit.

Senior,
Did you put the V Force on before or after your 310 kit? I know that the 310 has big grunt off the bottom, did the V-Force add even more? Better throttle response too?

I agree with Fred and fishhead, the EE are the way to go. High quality and the mounts fit sooooo much better than my Protaper mounts ever did. The mounts are two piece so you don't need to remove everything from your bars to install 'em either. :thumb:

bscottr, I was just saying that the 00 is fast and he could prob squeek some more power out, but it wont be userly friendly. I raced a 00 in nasty slippery conditions and wasnt happy with the motor when i was fatiged. My brothers 01 which is pretty much the same bike is a totally differnt aniimal, smoooooth !!! Hes got a turbine sparkarrester fmf on it and not too much more for engine mods. I cant believe how different the 00 and 01 motors are. Night and day

Posted by: bscottr---------------------

Dan,
If you are referring to too much hit vs. smooth power I agree. I didn't want to leave the impression that just because you port it it will have more hit. That's what makes porting selection critical.

Retarding the timing 1 -2 degrees will also help control the hit.

Posted by: Layton---------------------

One of the biggest problems with the bike is the transmission. First gear is too high so you have to clutch it all of the time in tight stuff and fifth gear is to low for any top speed. That’s a hard thing to change and very expensive.

Posted by: MSracer---------------------

The tranny ratios are the biggest drawback to a KX offroad. My only real complaint with mine.

Posted by: Dan105---------------------

ya i was going to say that about the tranny too, gearing it down does you know good. Also anyone with a 00 should update their tranny parts with 01 parts when they have the chance. Makes the bike shift better. The 99 was and 01,02 were all good tranny's the 00 has something different that needs to be changed
