Good Pirelli intermediate tire

A buddy got a certificate for a free set of Pirelli's in a race prize package, needs advice. He currently runs Maxxis MaxCross IT's in the D36 harescramble series. Any suggestions for California terrain (varies from hardpack to mud & rocks). He was going to try the new MT450's, but they don't have an 18 rear. Maybe MT450 front & a diff. rear?

MT 450 front & MT 18 rear.
I put the MT 18 on the rear of the 440 about 3 months ago & I have been very happy with both the hook & the durability.
