New Gold Valves-please help

Put gold valves in my forks this weekend. I had the cartridge open to convert the mid valve to a standard "check valve" as recommended.
The problem came when I put the aluminum dampener rods back in the main fork rod. One of the dampener rods sits just above the top of the fork rod and had a little spring to it when pushed down with a finger. The other dampener rod sits just below the top of the main rod and has no spring to it. This can't be right.
When I had the mid valve off I noticed that a small piece(cylindrical on one end and pointy on the other, less than an inch long) fell out of the main rod. I made sure that this piece made it back into the main rod on both sides. Does a spring go under this piece that I did not see? Should both dampener rods be "springy", and any ideas on how to fix my problem?
Bike is a '97 KX250/ Kayaba forks. -Thanks

Yes, there is a spring that goes in the bottom of the compression rod along with the rebound needle. The rebound rod (the solid aluminum rod that goes inside the compression rod) sits on top of the rebound needle and spring and both should feel "springy" when pushed down into the compression rod. I may not have all of my terms right but you should get the general idea.

thanks for the reply- I found the missing spring hanging out in a pile of dust under the work bench- here we go again with disassembly.
