A good friend of mine, Mark Shuler, was severely injured today while racing the GNCC Harescramble event in NC. He was life flighted out after sustaining a neck injury as a result of going over the bars. He is currently experiencing partial paralysis in his hands and has no feeling in his legs. They were taking him to the MRI when I spoke to another buddy that is with him (Stumpy) just a few minutes ago.

I pray the paralysis is only temporary. Your thoughts and prayers are certainly appreciated.

Scott

Posted by: Jeff Gilbert---------------------

Same here. I wish the best and keep us up-dated.

Posted by: Papakeith---------------------

Sorry to hear about your friend Scott. He and his family will be added to my prayers.

Posted by: bscottr---------------------

Thanks guys, I really appreciate your thoughts and prayers as I’m sure his family does.

The MRI revealed a broken 5th vertebra, however, the hospital staff would not reveal anything further until his parents get there. I intend to leave in the morning to go see him and I’ll post updates as I am able.

Thanks Again,
Scott

I saw your friend wreck today. I was about 50 foot away from were he wrecked. It looked like his front wheel got caught in a rut and he went over the handlebars. It was a very scary crash. I was telling my wife when I got home that I would like to know how he was doing.

Our family will pray for him. Please keep us up to date on how he is doing.

He is going in for surgery this morning to replace the vertebra and we are hopeful this will reduce pressure on his spinal column. I’ll keep you posted on his progress.

I talked with Scott. He's on his way to Asheville to see Mark. I was confused, I was thinking of someone else. I've ridden with Mark many times. 7 or 8 years ago we used to go down to their track near Holly Hill to ride.

Mark was riding his old RMX at Parson's Mountain when we got together last year for a group ride. He also came and rode with us at TNT last year. He's tough and in great shape. If anyone can make the best of this, it'll be him.

Posted by: a454elk---------------------

He's in our thoughts and prayers as well.

Posted by: Lew---------------------

He is in our thoughts. Hope he makes a full recovery

Posted by: CAL---------------------

Hope the surgery is successful and he makes a full recovery!

Posted by: High Lord Gomer---------------------

Scott will be passing this along to Mark later, either with a laptop at the hospital or by printing out the thread. All of your comments and thoughts will be appreciated.

Posted by: Treejumper---------------------

Mark, wish you the best of luck in your recovery and you'll be in my prayers!

best wishes.

I spoke with Scott at 5:30 this evening and he is waiting to hear back from the family to see how his surgry went. He said he would call me as soon as he heard any info.

I have known Mark for only three months. He is a super great guy. He and stump came up to my house and spent the night Saturday and we went to the race together yesterday. This is realy hard for me. We sat up the night before and played viedo games shot the bull. It doesn't seem real. I hope he has a full recovery and we can ride again. Mack

If you would send me a email mtereed@aol.com I would like to talk to you about the wreck. (see what you saw ect.) Thanks Mack

Posted by: nikki---------------------

I hate reading posts like this. I wish Mark a fast and full recovery. Get well soon.

Posted by: 4EverOrange---------------------

I will keep him in my prayers. Is there a way those that want to can send him a get well card?

Posted by: bscottr---------------------

As of 9:45 pm the surgeon was speaking with Mark’s family after 9 hours of surgery. I’m still waiting on a call from Stumpy with some news.

As usual, you folks are an awesome support mechanism. Mack and Gomer thanks for all the calls!

4EverOrange,
I'll post that info shortly. Thank you.

Posted by: Michelle---------------------

I'd like to say you've been great at keeping us updated, this helps make Mark a "real person" to those of us who haven't met him. Fingers crossed it all went well in surgery & that the paralysis is temporary.

Posted by: motohead00---------------------

My prayers and best wishes to your friend on a speedy and full recovery.

Posted by: TheGrinch---------------------

It always leaves a lump in my throat when I read threads like this. I hope Marks' surgery is successful and he makes a full recovery.

Posted by: limitless---------------------

Wow, man that sucks! I hope he gets well soon and has no serious lasting effects. My prayers are with him.

Posted by: bscottr---------------------

Good news late last night.

Yesterday prior to surgery Mark was unable to voluntarily move his arms below his shoulders and he had no feeling below his chest. Last night he reached up on his own and tried to pull the intubation (sp?) tube from his mouth. Although still heavily drugged, he said he felt very uncomfortable and that his hips hurt because they were not lying even on the bed. Sure enough, his weight was mostly on his left hip and once adjusted he said it felt better.

VERY positive signs as compared to pre-op and we are very hopeful that he continues to improve. He has a tough road ahead, but with our collective prayers and support he’ll make it. As Gomer said, Mark is physically strong and in great shape. His determination and mental state has always been one of his greatest assets. If anyone can beat this, he can.

Michelle,
Thanks for the kind words. Mark is one of those folks everyone likes to be around. He’s quite, unassuming, very intelligent and a friend that can always be counted on. As a rider he’s very fast on the track or in the trails. Yet he’s not cocky about his skills. He loves riding with spodes like me as well as the fast “A” guys like Mack. He’s an all around solid person and a great guy.

Thanks again to everyone!

Posted by: MikeT---------------------

That is good News and we hope and pray for full feeling to return to the rest of his body.

Posted by: High Lord Gomer---------------------

OMG, that is wonderful!!! Not knowing how Mark was doing was the worst part of DRN being down this morning.

Posted by: smb_racing---------------------

encouraging news indeed. Best wishes for a quick and full recovery from the SMB crew

Posted by: Michelle---------------------

Scott, that's fantastic news - definitely cheers the thread up

Did you see the post asking for an address to send cards to?

Posted by: bscottr---------------------

We’ve been hesitant to post the address as the doctors have been talking about transferring Mark to the Shepard Center in Atlanta and we are not sure when. Until Mark gets settled at a longer term address we decided to have the cards sent to our addresses and will deliver them to Mark. Please send an email to bscottr@mindspring.com or stumpdoggydog@hotmail.com or PM Gomer and we will send you the address. If you've already asked for the address I sent an email or PM to you. If you didn't receive it please let me know. Thank you in advance for all the encouragement for Mark!

Update on Mark’s condition:
Even though Mark is facing a tough battle he’s ready to get to work. This morning the physical therapist came in to speak to him about scheduling his therapy. They said to just let them know when he’s ready to start. His response, “How about now!”

Posted by: MikeT---------------------

He seems like one tough dude. I guess the surgery went well? Does he have any feeling in his legs at all?

Posted by: whyzee---------------------

Great news Scott, we will continue to keep Mark in our thoughts and prayers.
Dave & family

Posted by: 94ruck---------------------

Times like these are when we need to gather and pray. PLEASE keep us updated on his condition and attitude. seems like this man has a mission to heal already!

Posted by: High Lord Gomer---------------------

Mark's going to have a lout of hard work and tough times ahead of him. For anyone who would like to send a note of encouragement, you can send them to my house and I'll pass them along.

Mark Shuler
c/o Mike Nyland
10 Lambeth Walk
Columbia, SC 29229

Cards and letters only, please. No money, toy motorcycles, etc. As a matter of fact, until we find out how well the family is handling things, I think it would be better to not stress motorcycling too much, but rather our hopes for his future. Mark's a tough cookie and I'm sure would like to hear from his friends at DRN, but I don't know how well his family would handle MX posters on the walls of his hospital room.

I don't know how much Mark posted, but I do know he hung out and read a lot of the stuff in the pumpkin room (he's got a 250MX/C). Between the RM and the KTM, he *must* have a good sense of humor!

Mike,
He is tough! Surgery did go well, but his improvements so far are small but give us all hope. We are hoping when the swelling goes down in his neck from the surgery he will regain the feeling in his legs. He had a setback yesterday and they had to sedate him to remove fluid from is lungs. He will remain sedated for several days and they plan to perform a tracheotomy today or tomorrow to ease his breathing. If things go well they still plan to transfer him to Atlanta next week.

To all,
Thanks for the continued thoughts and prayers. Gomer thank you for taking the lead with the card coordination from our DRN buds.

Posted by: MikeT---------------------

Thanks Scott. Keep us updated.

Posted by: bscottr---------------------

Thought I’d give an update on Mark’s progress.

He was transferred to Atlanta last Monday. They’ve been working hard and successfully to keep fluid off his lungs. He’s currently on a ventilator, but Saturday he was off of it for 8 hours and off for 6 hours on Sunday. The Docs believe in a couple of weeks he will not need it at all.

His paralysis is still significant, however his outlook is outstanding. He has gained some movement in his wrists and has some feeling in his thumbs. With time and a lot of work hopefully he’ll regain full use of his hands. He is really ready to get to work on his rehab but must get out of ICU to do so. Soon!

He is a surveyor and is already thinking of ways to convert an ATV to enable his work. Mark is a determined trooper that WILL bounce back!

Thanks for the cards! :thumb:

Where most people seem to get bummed, he seems to be still accelerating. I am glad to hear he is in good spirits.

Posted by: Senior KX Rider---------------------

Great to hear that

Posted by: bscottr---------------------

Thanks guys! :thumb:

I must say that Mark is a great guy and I’ve always had great respect for his intelligence and drive. I just can’t describe just how much more respect I have for him now, given his condition, that his determination is sooo strong. He’s really incredible.

Posted by: MikeT---------------------

Hopefully, this is a swelling issue and (quickly) over time the pressure will go down and allow the nerves to start functioning again.

Posted by: bscottr---------------------

Michelle,
You ROCK! I received your card for Mark on Tuesday. He'll get it tomorrow. I’m going to ask Stumpy to give me a call when he gives it to Mark. Seeing that postmark from NZ is awesome. To think that folks all around the world are pulling for you. Unreal!

To everyone that has sent cards, prayers and thoughts. Thank You! You are a true testament to what this sport is all about. :thumb:
