Buying Used PW

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I'm looking to buy a used PW80 (1998 or newer is what I want). In addition to checking the air filter, wiggling the rear tire for suspension bearing wear, wiggling the wheels for bearing wear, looking for frame cracks, and a test ride. What else should I look for? Anything specific in regards to PW 80s.

Thanks in advance.

I just bought a 91 for my son. It is perfect for him and he loves it. My
belief is to get him/her real confident before introducing the clutch even if it requires and extra upgrade sooner down the road. I have found that I can take him on trails that even I can have some fun on, if he had too deal with a clutch, no way.

From my experience there is little or no difference between a 91 to 03 except for color. Check for all the usual things that you would on any used machine, condidtion of Air Cleaner, chain, sprockets, overall condition.

I just ordered the 13 tooth front sprocket to replace the stock 15 tooth, a must for any serious trail riding. (as serious as a PW80 could do) I went down 2 teeth, a lot I know but I think it will be perfect for the steep rocky trails we have done so far and it will keep his top speed down as well.

I will report back as to the result of that gear change after this weekend.

Scairns, thanks for the info. I look forward to hearing what difference the 13 did.

Great bikes. Had two of 'em for my sons a while back. In probably 7 years (combined) and hundreds of track and trail miles one bike broke the rear exhaust muffler bracket off the frame. I've owned hammers that were'nt as dependable. :thumb:

Well, I picked up a 99 PW80. It is in great shape. Just ordered the service manual. Til then I'll do the normal clean the filter, change the oil, clean the carb.

THanks all for the advice and confidence in getting the PW!

Sorry, I forgot to mention to pay particular attention to the air filter, as it's a rather chinsy arrangement that gets dirty very quickly and is a little difficult to seal. Otherwise, have fun they ARE great little bikes. I kinda wish they made an adult-sized version. Some days I feel like that's all I'm capable of riding.

I changed the front sprocket to a 13 from a 15 and it was a great move for the type of riding we do. His ability to climb slowly in control was greatly inproved and he can leave it in 2nd for a lot of the time without a problem.

For $20ca you can't beat that mod. I agree with the air filter comment it it pretty lame. I used moto-grey sealer to seal it very well, my son can't seem to avoid any puddle or mud hole he sees ???

I will switch to Motul 600 once he gets through the Yamalube.
The Yamalube works fine no fouling, I just like Motul.
