Hey guys, I'm looking at a 1996 RM 125 for my first bike, I can get it really cheap, and I know the guy selling it so it's not like he bullsn me on how he's taken care of it. He says it has had pretty much everything rebuilt on it, and it runs great.

Do you guys know of any issues with this bike to look out for? And how do they fit? I know the hondas are a little tighter than the yamahas but I don't no didly about the suzuki's. Thanks in advance!

Thanks...i don't know where everything is yet....sorry about that. I'll try and make sure I put it in the right spot from now on.

My borther had a 96 rm125, never had any problems with it. he only kept it one year and got a 97. He was 5'9" and about 175-185 at the time and it fit him fine.

Not sure about the 125's of that era but the 250's had tranny issues and clutch problems. Start it and pull the clutch in, drop it in 1st - does the bike want to creep forward? If it does the clutch basket is shot (the baskets on the 250's were VERY soft and like to develop "saw teeth".
Ride it thru the gears and make sure it shifts without feeling overly tight int the trans!

Thanks Woodsy! So do you happen to know if you can get a different clutch basket(upgraded one) that would fix that problem if it was bad? Ok...that souded bad... I ment to say does anyone make an upgraded clutch basket for it, I know you can change the basket...just wasn't sure if anyone made a better than OEM for it. THANKS!

A 125 can work pretty good in the woods, I would recommend a few more teeth for the rear sproket, makes the tight stuff much easier. I'm riding a 125 for woods, no problems at all! IF the price is right, go for it!

Hey guys, I just went and checked out that bike. Well he says it's an 1996, but the 96's came with a normal fork, but this one has an inverted fork. So it's either pre 96 or a 99 or newer(which I doubt!) Anyways. I also noticed that they did a yellow from on the suzuki's before 94 or so. Does anyone know when they stopped doing the yellow frame? I have a feeling this bike is around a 91 or so. All the plastics including the shrouds and tank all look like they are from around 99 or newer. Can you replace all the plastic stuf from a 91 with say 99 or newer stuff? I just want to make sure this thing isn't an old turd, I want to make sure it's what he says it is, I don't think the guys at the shop have any clue...so I would really appretiate any info you guys could give me!!!!!

slcpunk21 -

i have no idea about the specifics of your questions, but i know that if you have this many questions and this much reservation about this bike, take a pass on it. there's literally thousands of used 125's out there, you should buy one of them.

the whole thing seems fishy.

PS - for what its worth, I think 125s are horrible for eveything except racing in 125 class races. if you want mainly to do something other than race in the 125 class, stay away from the 125's.

My 1994 RM's frame was grey. You can usually fudge newer plastic onto an older bike. Like Beerstud said, if you have reservations about it, look for another one. And contrary to what BeerStud said, a 125 can do just about anything you want, they make a great bike for having fun on. Fun to ride, easy to work on. I own my 125, and don't race at all, although I might finally get into it...

You can find out the year by looking at the 10th Digit in the VIN #, posted below is a quote from another thread by a454ELK.

As long as it's a conforming Vin through the US and Canada (usually) this will work. If it's not intended for import into the US, they don't use the same standards.

Hey...thanks alot guys! The owner has the original bill of sale, and it's being sold through a shop. So I'm not gonna really get screwd. I dont' have any reservations about it. Just a few questions...cause the owner of the bike wasn't there, and it was just dropped off. I couldn't get to the shop this weekend to get ahold of anyone or the vin since they were closed sunday. But from the stuff I've seen it's a 92 which is fine! I'm still getting a really good deal on it!

The main reason I want a 125 is cause it's a bit lighter and less powerful than the other bikes, and it's my very first bike. The main reason I'm getting one is just to get me faster for DH mountain bike racing. I may want to get something bigger later on, but for the price I'm getting this bike for I can ride it for a year, and more than likely make money on it or at worst break even on it if i resell it.
Again thanks for all the help guys! This is a really sweet site! And as soon as I get a paypal account going I'm gonna become a paying memeber of this site!

Oh...I forgot to mention... I did test ride it too...and it ran pretty good! I had a buddy that knows about 2-strokes and he also said it sounded great just needed a little tuning. It shifted through the gears great... it still has a lotta pep..especially when it hit the power band. There was no oil leaking from the shocks...nothing bent...everything seemed realy nice. So I'm much much more confident that the bike isn't crapy!
