My personal opinion and it is just that, personal opinion.  If you are having to think about whether you want to race, then you probably don't.  I have been around racers most of my life and have been lucky enough to be in close contact with some of the best in not only motocross, but other sports like Nascar and Indycar as well.  One common thing I have found amongst all racers, whether they be a local Saturday night racer or elite in their sport  is this intense desire to do nothing but race.  There is a passion involved with a racer that drives them more than any other athletes I have seen.  That saying about a racer is always a racer is truer than you could believe.  Their is a drive in racers that is almost impossible to describe,  you can't stop them.

None of this means you should not give it a try if you want.  I just think if you are having to think about it, then it may or may not be your cup of tea.  Life is all about trying different things.  Try it, you might like it or you may say I tried it and it wasn't my thing.  No harm either way.

What kind of racing do you want to do MX, enduro, hare scrambles? Age groups and skill sets vary depending on what you want to do. Enter some races and talk to people. You may want to do some training classes with pros. Go to www.ama-cycle.org/rulebooks or try www.ecea.org you can get descriptions of the different types of racing. You can also check out the manufacturers web sites some of them offer payment to people that enter races with their bikes but you have to check out their requirements sometimes it's specific races on the newer bikes you may have to take a podium place to get anything. Also check with your local shop and see if they would be willing to sponser you. Some may at the least give you discounts on parts to ride with their name on your bike. As far as age goes if you want to be a pro, it seems the younger you start the better. If you just want to have fun then it doesn't matter there are youth classes and there are senior classes depending on the type of riding.
I don't think the TTR-125 is going to be a real competitive bike but there are people here better able to answer that question than me. Size and weight experience level and what kind of racing you're going to do will determine what kind of bike should get.
Check out the rule books on AMA it should tell you what is required for your bike to race in the different types of racing (ie. enduro needs a headlight, tail light etc.).
Hope this helps.
