What to Get?

Hi, I'm a 15 year old girl from Baltimore MD. My brother (age 11) and I just recently started getting involved in dirtbiking and motocross. I really want to get a bike and start riding, but I want to make sure I get the right one for me. I've never ridden before, except once or twice with my Dad's friend when we went to see the races. I weigh 114 lbs and I'm 5' 7''...what size bike do you think I should get? And would it be better for me to get a new or used one? Any replies are appreciated, thanks!

If you still need to get the fundamentals of riding down, I recommend buying a bike that's cheap and easy to ride (can you say "fourstroke"?) that would afford you with the opportunity to learn the basics w/out spending alot of money. An old XR100 might fit the bill although it will be a lot smaller than a bike that's sized for a 5'7 person, but that's ok since you'll probably get rid of it as you will easily outgrow the bike in size and power. After that, you can shop around for your first serious bike.
If you already know how to ride well, lemme recommend the KX100. It's a twostroke, but isn't as hyperactive as other minis. I have this bike and it's a great bike, and fits me perfect (I'm 5'5"-5'6", somewhere around there). Or at 5'7", you could go right to a fullsized bike if you feel you can handle it, but I wouldn't recommend it since your weight would affect how the bike handles, and at 114lbs., it would probably be hard for you to control a fullsize. The main reason I recommended the KX100, is b/c it's bigger than the minis (which at 5'7 you're too big for), but smaller than a fullsize bike and easier to handle. Plus since your're pretty light, it would carry your weight easily. Hope this helps.

P.S.- I noticed you're from Baltimore, where do you ride?

I forgot to say that if you're buying a first bike, buy used, it's much cheaper.

Thanks for the advice, I will take all that into consideration...and I've ridden at Budds Creek, and a few times somewhere up in PA when we go camping, but I don't really have a 'place' that I always ride at yet, since I just started.

Frostbite,
I agree that the XR100 would be a good first bike. Yea you'll want to trade it in before long but it is a great bike and it will be great for familiarizing yourself with riding. Get the XR have fun then you can trade it in for something like a CR80. Hope this helps!

XR100's might be a little small for somebody 5'7" I'm sure you'd fit perfect on an XR200, or the new CRF230. They have much more power to offer than the XR100, and are much easier to ride than a 2 stroke small bore bike, such as a 85 or 100. Those bikes are fun, but would be tough to learn on, and ride, therefore, perhaps not as fun. Definatly more maintenence too. An XR you can ride day after day, and just do your basic maintence when you need to and not be worried about jetting, fouled plugs, mixing gas, etc.

We've owned both the XR 100 and XR 200 and they are great beginner bikes that resell easily. They can be found used. If you're 5'7" you'd like the 200 better, it has about a 34" seat height. Simple to operate and maintain. Their suspension is NO GOOD for jumps of any size on a motocross track though. I know, cause I've done it!! My .02 there is to keep jumps at 3 ft. or less.
That said, a four stroke is a GREAT bike to learn on. Get one, learn the basics, get some confidence and move on to something faster.
Good luck!

Thanks everyone for the input...I have it narrowed down to the XR100 or KX100, but I'm leaning more toward the XR100 for now, because I've heard it's a better beginner bike. And then maybe as I get better I'll get a KX 125 or something around that since I know my dad can get a pretty good deal on the Kawasakis...anyway, thanks again to everyone who gave me suggestions!

you're WAY too big for an XR100, period. my 5'4" girlfriend is almost too big for hers. if its a matter of budget, buy used. if its not budget, look at a CRF230 or XR250 or something else meant for normal sized people.
do not get an XR100. you will be happy with it for exactly 1 day.

My wife has a kx100 and she is already complaining that the bike is too small for her. She is 5' 4", 110 pounds.
At 5' 7" your big enough for an xr250 or a KDX200/220 which is a great beginners bike and either can be found used for a good price.
Good luck.
Let us know what you decide.

really? too big? I've ridden a kx 100 a few times, and it seemed to fit me ok, although I don't think I've ridden it enough to know for sure...maybe it has something to do with the fact that I've ridden BMX a little and so I'm used to the small bikes...anyway, I'll take your suggestions, and as soon as I go out looking for a bike I'll be sure to try it out first to see if it really fits. Thanks!
