Anybody have any opinions on the crf450r being voted bike of the year by Dirt Rider magazine? Is the voting based on performance, reliability, sales--or a combination of these; maybe advertising dollars? How does this bike standout from all the others?

Not sure if I posted in the correct forum category. Please accept my apology if not posted correctly.

Thanks

This is a very good question, one I ask each year when either MXaction or Dirtrider mags. Have the "BIG" bike of the year deal. MXaction says the YZF450 is best mx 4stroke and the others have different views. I have told many people this and I think there is some truth to it, most of the riders who test the bikes ride Hondas and yamahas through out the year (MXaction mostly Yamahas) so I think that they usually rate those bikes best whether they are the best or not, mostly because that is what they are used to. I believe all of the current bikes are very competive machines, there are people on this site who have bought 03 RM's , KX's KTM's and the rest that are very happy with there bikes. I too bought into the "4 strokes are best, and the CRF is the best 4 stroke" deal this year. I do like the bike but there are quirks with it as there are with any bike, Dirtrider makes you think that the CRF is the perfect bike. I do not like the excessive amount of oil changes on a 4 stroke, my clutch fades very quick and has already gotten very notchy, the air filter is very difficult to remove, the wheels seem soft and the list goes on and on, but I guess there is not a perfect bike. I would recomend buying a bike that is fun for you to ride, not just because a pro in a mag says it is best. I will say one thing though I think I will once again own a 2 stroke because they are fun for me, 4 strokes are as well just be very carefull it is not cheap to buy a new bike there are many "opinions" out there

IMO? Pick one.

This deal with the magazines has gotten really funny. Everybody accuses MXA of being so blatantly for Yamaha but nobody notices how pro Honda CRF450 dirt rider is. They can't slam the YZF enough when they do a shootout, they even slam it in the WRF test. All Karel Kramer seems to be able to comment on is how wonderful Honda seats are! For cripe sakes man stand up once in a while. The icing on the cake was the dyno chart they printed that was missing about 1000 rpm off the top of the YZF450 horsepower curve. A couple simple mods and the Yamaha can be just as "friendly" as the Honda. These people have all come down again with the dreaded Hondaitis that swept the country while Mac rode for them. I buy and read all these mags and take all their comments with a grain of salt.

"grain of salt" is the key, just ride what you are happy with. I highly recommend riding a barnd that you can get service and parts for without problems in your area. I have had many problems with a couple of my local dealerships which makes things tough. Also to coment on the seat issue on CRF's I have had mine since nov. 02 and it is very soft now ( I often feel the seat base) Like I said before the CRF is NOT the perfect bike for everyone.
