Should I just wait for the CRF250X?

Here is the info. on me: 18 yrs. old, 5'8", 140 lbs., athletic (haha, so far sounds like a singles ad), no riding experience. I am planning on sticking mainly to trails but want something that can handle the occasional jump or two. From what I have been reading the XR 250 sounds like a great bike for me to start out on. However, the more i read about the CRF250X the more appealing it sounds (whether it be right for a newbie or not). I can't remember what the price is on the CRF or if I have even seen it, but I would definately be willing to wait until i could afford it (purchasing a used XR 250 is definately within my range). I want a bike that will keep me happy for a while as I plan to continue on in the sport once I get started. Basically my question is will the CRF250X be a good bike for me to start out on or should I just go ahead and get a XR250? Also, I would not be afraid of messing up a new bike and I know that I should learn how to use a kick start but i can/would do that on my friend's bike. If anyone's knows where I can get additional info. on the CRF besides Honda's website it would be greatly appreciated. -Jeff

I'm looking at the CRF250X and CRF250R, as well. I'm not sure that I can wait that long, though. I'm soooo close to just picking up the CRF230 for half the price of both these bikes, assuming that they're in the 5k range. ..And I believe the 250X come with both an electric starter and a kick starter.

having never ridden the crf250 i cannot speak from absolute authority, but let me throw out this analogy: wondering if you should get an XR250 now or wait for the crf250 is like asking, "should i get a honda civic now, or save my nickles and get a porsche?"

the two bikes aren't even remotely comparable. the crf 250 is (or will be) honda's answer to the YZF250, meaning it'll be a high performance race bike. which means less wieght, higher performance, and more maintainence, and ultimately, less durability.

if you are the high strung, hard charging type, then its probably better for you to wait for the CRF250 (or get the WR/YZF250 now). if you're low-key and just want a bike that will stert every time you want it to start for years with nothing but oil changes and a couple valve adjustments, get the XR. don't take this to mean that an XR won't go fast. they go fast, its just that they don't FEEL fast.

My first bike was an XR250 and I could not imagine a better bike for someone your age, I was about 17 when I got mine. I am also assuming that since you are looking at either a CRF250X or XR250 then you want to ride mostly in the woods and not so much the track, if that is true then the XR would be my pick if it was my first bike, I am getting an XR400 for my next bike, after many years on MX bikes, mainly because I have a lot more fun out on the trails then on a track.

Heres my quote" the crf250x is the xr I always wanted".

If you are going to wait for and try to buy a CRF 250 you better get really close to your local dealer and get some money down on one because they may be hard to get

I've been thinking the same thing. Wait for the CRF250X or just pick up a used XR250 for now. I'm thinking the latter lately since there's very little info. available as to when these new Hondas will actually hit the showroom floors.

Since the CRF450R is the exact same price as the YZF450 I'm betting that the CRF250X will be priced the same as a WR250 and the CRF250R will be the same as a YZF250. At least a grand more than the XR250. What I'm wondering is what Honda will do with the XR250 next year, they discontinued the XR200 when the CRF230F came out but if they just discontinue the XR250 then there's a big hole in their lineup, nothing to compete with the TTR250/DRZ250 bikes. I'm betting on a CRF230F fitted with longer travel/swingarm like the XR250 including the adjustable shocks and bored out to be a CRF250F. That would fill the void between the $3299 CRF230F and the $5799 CRF250X (again I'm just speculating on that price).

I'm and optimist and I don't buy into that "you'd better put a deposit down now for a CRF250". I was told back in 2000 that if I didn't put down a $1000 deposit for the 2001 GM Duramax Diesel trucks that I'd never have a chance. Sure enough in June 2001 I went from dealer to dealer test driving multiple Silverado's with the new Diesel and grabbed one up for $1000 over invoice where some of my friend's paid a $1000 over sticker because they were so sure nobody would be able to get their hands on one. Come next Spring if the CRF250X is really impossible to get my hands on I'll simply grab a WR250, the Honda looks good but I'm sure Yamaha will keep improving the WR to stay competitive.
