Spark Plugs?

Rich, my friend and I have been wrestling with the question where do you check a spark plug for lean and or rich jetting? He told me that you recommend cutting the old spark plug down the side of the threads and look at the bottom of the plug or something close to that. I've always checked the end of the plug along with everybody I know. I've asked local mechanics and racers and no one has ever heard of that. If you would please tell me your ideas and why?
