Fools Gold Enduro

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

All, you may want to pre-enter this if you plan on riding,
we had over 315 entries at the Sawmill not counting those post entries that came ,saw and left

Chris or Frank didn't you have a limit of 300 last year,

Posted by: wsmc831---------------------

I'm pretty sure there was a 300 rider limit. I saw people being turned away in the morning. Though, it was a Q, I suppose more people come out for Q's than normal enduro's...

Posted by: CERAChris---------------------

There is a 300 rider limit imposed by the Forest Service. Unfortunately, we had to turn a couple of guys away last year. I agree with the comment that we may lose a few riders because it isn't a Q, but on the other hand enduro attendance has been higher than last year. We have almost 100 pre-entries with the drawing to be held next week, so that puts us pretty close to last year's pace (135 pre-entries). It's best to either pre-enter or plan to post-enter on Saturday to ensure a spot.

Doesn't look like dust will be an issue, so it should be an awesome ride. 75-80 miles of the Gold Country's best trails, designed to test the A's, but let the C's finish with their dignity intact.

You promise?

Posted by: CERAChris---------------------

Last year 120 out of 143 C riders finished. Over half of the DNF's were machine-oriented (mainly flat tires - use heavy duty tubes and 14 PSI for the rocks). Dignity was rampant.

Posted by: AKCPlumb---------------------

Sawmill was just over the 175 total for pre-entries, When I went up to their club meeting the night of the drawing they were under a 100. Plus with no more CC events until the fall we will be getting some additional cross overs.

Posted by: dp400---------------------

I've ridden Georgetown once in the rain and I can't really remember what the terrain was like. Can someone compare it to other riding areas around here such as Stonyford, Middlecreek ? How many deep river crossings :-) ?
Dan

Posted by: fremontguy---------------------

dp400, the main trails at Georgetown are deep woods, 2-track trails similar to Middlecreek. The way fun trails are tight single-track, cut into manzanita and pine trees. Lots of rocky stuff too and only 1 creek crossing I know of there.

Posted by: Alex04---------------------

Last year this was my first ever race of any kind it was 2 days before my birthday and I barley survived with my stock 89 yz250 I hope I can get enough money and the time off work to ride this brutral race. But now I have 5 hare scrambles under my belt so i think i will do better oh year im finally getting a pipe

Posted by: TooBadBrad---------------------

There's 7 or 8 of us from North Bay M/C riding, do you think there will be any payback?

Posted by: dp400---------------------

Does anyone know of a hotel/motel near by the race?

Posted by: wsmc831---------------------

there's the georgetown motel, stayed there last year.

it's ...um...rustic. shared bathrooms, it's above a bar and get's a little noisy. they DO have extremely cold beer...which is good.

there was a much newer hotel close by..can't remember the name..but I'm sure you'd find it on a yahoo search.

Posted by: Bigbird---------------------

There is a B&B called the American River Inn, I believe. My wife and I have stayed there the last two years. It is pretty nice, but expect to pay $90+ for just a room with no amenities and a shared bathroom.

Posted by: Unkle Moose---------------------

TooBadBrad no need for you or most of your club members to worry. Now that BigBird fellow is a different story RetSenior and I have special instructions to make his life miserable I will be working the Gas Stops (look for the man in the Husaberg hat) and will make sure BigBird has the sweetist gas around

May all racers have a fun safe race.

See ya later BigBird

Kraig

Hi,
I haven't ridden since a polka-dot grand prix in 1985 out at Prairie City. I'm just getting back into riding and wonder if this would be a good ride for me. I'm 47, have a KDX220 with a FMF woods pipe, Boyesen reeds, KX125 inverted forks, (I like to tinker) and jetted as good as it can get. A few other peak and tweaks as well. I've ridden Georgetown back in the mid 80's but not since. When is this race and how would I sign up? Thanks for the help.

Posted by: dirt bike dave---------------------

Skipro,
The event is May 4th.

You can find an entry form and more info at the AMA District 36 page, http://www.ama-d36.org/

Georgetown is a great place to ride, so you would probably have lots of fun. It is a District Championship event, so there is the potential for some challenging trail. If you want to trail ride the course, the District offers an 'E' class entry. This is a non-competitive class that starts after the racers.

Posted by: skipro3---------------------

Thanks!

Posted by: Bigbird---------------------

Ok, that's it. I am ordering a six gallon tank for my KTM so I don't have to stop for gas. HaHaHa.

RetSenior, I have a trophy for you from the Sawmill two years ago. I found it at the clubhouse, and was holding it for you at signups this year. I wanted to give it to you with all the fanfare that a sandbagger like you should get.

All kidding aside, I am looking forward to the FG, and seeing you and UnkleMoose. Maybe we can meet at the Georgetown bar to do some Karoke Saturday night.

Posted by: RetSenior---------------------

OK, I feel the love. See you all at the Fools Gold.

Posted by: CERAChris---------------------

FYI, there is no E or Trail Rider class at this year's Fools Gold. These classes cause CERA an operational hassle that we don't have the personnel to handle easily. That in combination with our Forest Service-imposed 300 rider limit and last year's sellout, it just didn't make sense to offer a shorter, cheaper ride for just four or five guys (which is how many E's we've gotten in the past).

Bottom Line: Sign up to ride the whole course. If you need to quit, we'll get you back to camp.

Posted by: LocoCD---------------------

We're looking forward to the event as well. 6 or 7 of us old foggies from Roseville have entered, our sole intent is to increase the number of trophies handed out in the C-Senior class by padding the class with "entry level geezers" that can barely finish!

Bigbird - this will be my son's first full enduro, he's been doing extremely well in all of the youth races and want's to give it a try. He has been pretty polite when we go riding in suggesting that the moderate pace I set (my race speed) is fine for play riding. It's a bittersweet day when your youngest becomes faster than you...

Posted by: Bigbird---------------------

LocoCD, yes it is a sad day when your kids have to be gentle with you. Thank goodness my daughter is heading off to college this fall. It could be embarassing, she already kicks my butt on the ski slopes.

Hopefully, we will get to see you, and UnkleMoose, RetSenior. We will be in Georgetown on Saturday. My wife wants to check out the stores there.

Posted by: Unkle Moose---------------------

Hey BigBird since I have seen you try and start your bike (U bought a KTM without an electric start) I have notified the start crew to give you a bump start so you you don't hold up the next minute.

Hey I have 2 friends with a 2001 KTM400e & 2001 KTM520e both like new with many extras for sale!

See ya at Georgetown.

GO PUG RACING!

Posted by: LocoCD---------------------

Big Bird - Major score in the mail today. The DMV is implementing the revised green sticker rules and my 02 300EXC is now an official green sticker bike. Great bike and it just got better!

Posted by: wsmc831---------------------

same here, I have an 02 300mxc and slapped that bad boy on yesterday. every bike 02 and earlier is getting them.

Posted by: chasejj---------------------

Alright!! George doing Karaoke at the Georgetown Hotel.
Sweet!!!!!!!!! That is scary thought indeed. Maybe after a few pitchers.

Got my number today 63A. Can't hardly wait.

Unkle Moose- Could you please have my ice cold towel and hot lunch ready at gas for me?

Posted by: Unkle Moose---------------------

Chase give me your order and I will have it ready for you.

Ok 63A I can change that to 83A and realy make you have a fun gas stop

Posted by: dp400---------------------

Can someone tell me where the staging area (start of race) is - I'll be staying at the "Squeal Like A Pig" Inn. How do I get to the race from there?
Thanks Dan

Posted by: Bigbird---------------------

Alright Kraig, leave my sorry KTM SX (without the electric start) alone. It is sensitive. Just make sure the start is downhill just in case. :o

LocoCD, you've got one of the best all around bikes available. Now a green sticker. Life is good. I wonder if I'll get one for my bike next year. See you and your son at the FG.

BTW, thanks for the good number you guys.

dp400, my wife and I will probably be at the Georgetown Hotel bar Saturday night (early), just ask RetSenior, UnkleMoose or any of the other DRN'rs to point us out. I'll be happy to go over some points I've learned about the Watchdog.

Posted by: ktmzak---------------------

Chris, RetSenior,

When will the route sheet be posted?

thanks,

bill

Posted by: LocoCD---------------------

Big Bird - I think they are sending them out as replacements now if your bike is 2002 and older with a current red sticker. If not you can probably pop into the DMV and get a replacement.

The 10 day forcast shows some rain over this weekend, clearing up next Tuesday with partly cloudy into the weekend of the race. It will be either perfect conditions or wet, I certainly do not anticipate dust at the race (well maybe snow dust).

Posted by: CERAChris---------------------

KTMZak,

The route sheet will be posted mid-week next week. I want to get final confirmation that we're not postponed by the Forest Service before I release it. The Georgetown rangers are very particular about moisture and enduros after the debacle in 2000. The long range forecast looks promising, I'll definitely post ASAP if there's any change in the 'Go' status.

Posted by: RetSenior---------------------

I defer all info to CERAChris since I know nothing.

Posted by: ktmzak---------------------

Thanks Chris

Posted by: EnduroDude---------------------

What about camping, Is there a fairly flat area we should look for pulling our travel trailer?

Posted by: CERAChris---------------------

The Mace Mill Staging Area consists of a series of small, open dirt parking spots along the paved Mace Mill Road. Mace Mill Road is three miles long, the camping spots for the enduro start about 1/4 mile past the sign-in trailer. There are many spots for trailers, motorhomes, etc. I have parked my 34-foot motorhome at several different areas along Mace Mill Road. Get there early for the best spots.

Reminder, before driving up everyone should call the toll-free CERA hotline at 866-244-2372 to make sure the event is on in case of hard rain Friday, Saturday, or Sunday.

Posted by: dp400---------------------

Any word if the race is still on?? I sure hope the weather doesn't push the race to June.

Dan

Posted by: treefinder---------------------

As Chris said, everyone should call the toll-free CERA hotline at 866-244-2372 before heading up to the enduro.

The phone number will always have the most up-to-date info, as we can update that from the woods (unlike the web site or posting here).

Come on sun!!!

Posted by: Bigbird---------------------

Hey LocoCD, guess what I got in the mail today? (pause, pause, pause) A green sticker for my KTM. I can really rail the trails now.

Posted by: wsmc831---------------------

anyone heard from Alan on if someone will ever fix the D-36 website? seems like someone removed anonymous access.....

Posted by: dp400---------------------

This (close to the fools gold race date) is a bad time for it to be down. Where will the roll chart info be posted?
Dan

Posted by: Farmer John---------------------

I got this in my Timekeeper's mail list:
Quote:
All,

The district 36 website is currently down for an upgrade. If you are
attempting to go to the site and get a prompt for a password, that is
the reason why. You will not be able to get into the web site until
the upgrade is complete. I apologize for the downtime. I will post
again when it is back up.

D36 Webmaster

I do know that as soon as the sheet is available that it will probably turn up in my e-mail.

It should be available on the CERA website first.

The 2003 Fool's Gold Enduro, originally scheduled on Sunday May 4th, has been postponed due to wet weather conditions.

The enduro is rescheduled for Sunday June 1. Pre-entrants will receive a letter explaining the refund process if you cannot make the new date.*

Edit 5/2: The June 1 date is official.

Too bad...Sunday is supposed to be sunny and warm, with the weather before the ride it would have provided an absolute awesome event.
Don't know if I will want to choke down dust in June over water-skiing.

Posted by: treefinder---------------------

Yea, it's no fun and no something we do lightly. But Georgetown has a rule in which they require 48 hours of dry weather before the trails can re-open after being closed because of rain. It rained today (which means the earliest the club can get out there to mark the course is Saturday), and it is supposed to rain more Friday (which would reset the 48 hour clock). I'd be very surprised if Georgetown is open at all this weekend.

Posted by: wsmc831---------------------

DAMN! This darn weather is killing me. First it washes out the Sawmill, then I buy a new convertible and can barely take the top down, now it pushes out ANOTHER race! ARGGGGGGGGGH!

Hell, I might as well move back to Oregon, their weather is just as good.

but, I'm not put out as much as the Cera folks, sorry for all the extra work this will cause. If I can't make the race, you can keep my entry fee anyway and put it towards the club.

Posted by: Bigbird---------------------

I'm sorry for all the CERA folks. I know how much work goes into putting on an event, and their's is one of the best in Dist-36. You can't argue with Mother Nature. Well, I'll still be there June 1st, ready for a first class ride.

Posted by: CERAChris---------------------

Thanks for the support. As the Fools Gold Coordinator, an event postponement really sucks. You build up all this emotional momentum as the event nears as the JART Charts, AMA paperwork, finisher pins, entries, etc. all pour in. Then you just shut it off for four weeks. However, this was the right decision for CERA, the riders, and the forest.

Despite EnduroDude's optimism, conditions at Georgetown would have been grim this Sunday. There's still snow all over Bald Mountain, the area has received over 4 inches of rain since last Thursday, and today is the first day it hasn't rained since then. With another storm coming in on Friday and Saturday, it would have been a survival run. We did that in 2000, and it wasn't any fun having to herd half the riders in from Gas when they houred out after only 20 miles. Having to spend the next two years fixing the resultant trail damage rated low on the 'fun scale' as well. We've postponed the event into June before, and typically been rewarded with excellent trail conditions and slightly dusty roads.

If you haven't pre-entered yet, now would be a good time. There are only 94 slots left. See you June 1....

Posted by: LocoCD---------------------

Good call CERAChris, it's about riding conditions and it is also about relationships with the USFS and others. This will probably work out best for both.

Looks like you guys are doing back-to-backs with the TW on the 8th. If you need any help in the next month let me know, we will be riding both but would be more than happy to help out setting up, etc.

Posted by: treefinder---------------------

Note: CERA is having some issues with our web site (the machine it is hosted on is dying and will be swapped shortly), so if www.cera.org is unavailable in the next day or two DON"T PANIC! D36 has the route sheet and will hopefully post it soon.

And as always, the toll-free club hotline (866-244-2372) will have the latest info on the event.

Posted by: treefinder---------------------

Hi folks-
Dunno if any DRNers trophied at the Fool's Gold this year, but if you should have received a trophy and did NOT yet receive it, please drop me an email at: cera_web@pacbell.net

Thanks!
