Dead engine starts?
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I ride in the A/AA class in my local hare scramble series. I use the technique to kill the engine while pulling the clutch lever in while the bike is in gear for the dead engine starts. Sometimes it fires first kick, sometimes it takes a few kicks. The problem is, the times that it does fire up a few kicks later....I have to work my way from the back of the pack. This costs be many positions as I am usually a top 5 place rider with a mid pack or better start. Your advice would be appreciated. I have a KTM 200 EXC.

You are a top 5 A/AA rider and need advice on dead engine starts?

I hear that Eddie..hehe
Here's my .02, before you let the engine shut down, leave it in gear, pulling in the clutch and rev it about 4-5 times, this usually splashes the oil off the plates and creates less drag while starting in gear.
Oh yeah, practice until you know it will start first kick EVERY TIME!

Put the bike in gear then roll it backwards til it comes up on compression, that way you're kicking the piston on the down stroke instaid of through compression, after you've warmed up and freed the clutch plates as described above.I also like to start in second gear, one less upshift into the first turn that way.Disregard all this if you're in my line!

I appreciate your comments. I have been using the same method, but without revving a few extra times before I hit the kill switch. I have been getting mid pack or worse lately, and have to work my way all the way up to the front causing myself to be more exhausted then I should be. I even work out twice a week to keep my fitness level up. I was thinking, if I get a better start, I will be in a better position and not have to use as much energy. If your wondering why I am asking, I cannot ask my fellow racers because they will know of my weakness and haunt me for years to come. I have just entered this class, as I just turned 18, I have many years to come. Thanks again.

Kawi,
Besides the other tips, I would suggest making sure your bike is warmed up properly first. Also like anything else practice, makes perfect. At least that's what I 've been told.

Practice! I have a technique where I shift to 2nd while the engine is running...then I let out the clutch to where it loads the engine and then hit the kill switch. I will start the bike a couple of times after doing this but don't let the clutch back out. make sure the bike is cleaned out before shutting it down but don't overdo it.
My bike starts everytime on the first kick.
You guys with electric starts... I am beating you to the first turn. i rode a 400exc last year and was 3rd on the start...i couldn't tell if the bike was running!!
ALL in fun...let the tongue lashings begin

Thanks everyone. I know I have to warm the bike etc., but I was just looking for something new to try. I recently tried the tip where I revv the bike before I kill it. Works perfect. The other thing, the pressure as all the spectators always watch the first line take off. I want to be one of the first off the line into the woods. Nothing like taking the holeshot.

Most of the electric starters I've seen don't seem to spin as fast as a guy can kick a motor over. Talking to others with Yammy's and KTM's most couldn't get their e-start bikes running as fast as kicking it. Interesting though at the last race someone told me that one of the pro's (don't remember which one) would kick and hit e-start at the same time. It'd worry me to try that but......it was interesting all the same.

I can verify that a pro rider does use both the button and the kick starter. I asked him because I wanted to know the secret for the hare scrambles races at Dirt Week in October.
