on my 96cr250 i had the shock sag set at 100mm and i dont get much swapping but i have no traction, my tire isnt in the best of shape but ive never messed w/ the shock settings? how can i go about doing this, like what direction to turn the knob and what does it do?

Go to MX-Tech website and download the "Tuning guide" It has all the answers your looking for. ppsst...just a note, all the shock tuning in the world will not overcome a poor tire...rubber is an excellent investment.

i got a new tire and now i have mad swapping lol. Though i turned the clicker(the rebound i think. the one on the can that is right in the center of the nut) almost all the way out(counter clock wise). should i have gone in the oppisite direction? Also I get the swapping at high speeds. Dont i Turn the nut(the one around the rebound clicker) for high speed? If so which way would i turn it?

I believe you have made the adjusment to your comp. not your reb. The comp.adj is the one at the top of the shock ( which you discribed) the rebound is at the bottom of the shock on the clevis. I would go back and set your comp and reb. in the middle and go from there.

Thanks man ill look into it!

Posted by: cr25096er---------------------

Where could I find a diagram of the shock and forks that shows all the adjustments and their names?

Posted by: JTT---------------------

The manual.

Shock: top adjuster (slotted screw) low speed (LSC) compression, Hex nut at top (if it has high speed adjuster) adjuster is high speed compression (HSC), bottom rebound
Forks: KYB - top adjuster rebound, bottom compression
Showa - top adjuster compression, bottom rebound

would it be ok if i set all the clickers to the middle of their adjustment and went from there? And inorder to get rid or lessen swapping i should be turning the high speed adjuster. but what way? I guess i want to soften the rebound? Would i turn it clock wise? Also on the forks they are harsh but still ok. The clickers are turned fully counter clockwise. to make them softer did i turn them the right way?

Posted by: JTT---------------------

Setting all the clickers to their middle positions is likely the best place to start. The "swapping" issue is not likely a high speed compression (HSC) issue. More than likely you are either too soft on LSC or too fast on rebound. It is well explained in the tuning guide I mentioned earlier.

With clickers, in most cases, clockwise is harder (or slower) and counterclockwise softer (or faster). To determine their position, turn them in fully (not too tight, just so they gently seat) and count the clicks turning them back out (counter clockwise).

At risk of sounding like a neophyte, what the heck is "swapping"?

Posted by: cr25096er---------------------

Thanks guies!! Swapping is when the rear end jumps from side to side like mad. Now what is the clevis?

Posted by: cr25096er---------------------

Ok I found the rebound. It is very low on the shock, pretty close to the linkage. But i have another question. I know the low speed compression is the slotted screw and as far as i know the hex nut around it(the nut is red) is the high speed. But when i turn the hex nut it dosnt click and the slotted screw turns w/ the nut. I think ill just leave it alone but is it really the high speed if it dosnt even click when turned?

Posted by: JTT---------------------

Yes, the HSC does not click, you have to keep track of the number of turns on your own. Don't worry that the LSC screw turns with the HSC. The LSC is not being changed, although it appears to be moving with the HSC.

Thanks Everyone!! Ive read the hsc will only work for about 2 turns. will It stop or keep turning?

Posted by: cr25096er---------------------

ok i have all the clickers set in the middle. But here is my question. if im riding and say its swapping or harsh. what adjustment should i start at?Im thinking rebound depending on the problem but is there a general one you go to first?

Posted by: JTT---------------------

Read up on that tuning guide from MXTech. It gives a pretty clear description of what to change depending on what is happening. Commonly "swapping" is blamed on rebound, but this is not always actually the cause. Compression is commonly blamed for harshness, but again, is not always the actual cause.

96er dont turn that hsc adjuster in too far or too hard because if you do it will become unthreaded inside the adjuster and youll lose all realm of adjustment and the shock will get way softer . Only turn it in softly. Get the manual Its got a real good tuning guide in it and youll also need it when its time to do your powervalves and stuff. GOOD LUCK
