Megaphone exhaust

I have seen a few thumpers (not many) with a full megaphone exhaust...i'm talking about where the silencer is maybe 18" long and tapers the whole way. What effect does this have on power compared to a standard oval or round silencer?
Are they just not popular because of mfg. cost?

Thanks,'s Rich, I was searching the wrong forum. Sounds like the standard glass pack design is better overall. I saw a deal on a "longer" megaphone (it's a supertrapp), but my luck it would be poor tuning for my XR650. This particular one had the cone section extending almost all the way to the headpipe junction (there was only about a 2" straight section).

Did you READ the thread?
The standard straight pipe to an absorbtion cannister is only "better" for guys trying to produce lots of pipes that are easy to package and maintain good profit margins.

OK Rich, you got me there. I had only been up about 3 minutes this morning when I skimmed the material, and not everyone had the same opinion on one design vs. the other. Sorry!
Too bad the link to the pictures doesn't work anymore...

Ive run a reverse cone on my YZ426 and now have on my CRF.
Its made by Thunder Alley. And I can tell you this, the bike pulls harder from off idle clear to the revlimiter.
The first time I rode my YZ with the Thunder Alley pipe on it, it scared the hell outa me. And I took a Pro Circuit pipe off to test the T/A, so a pretty good pipe, according to the "magazines".
The best part of the Thunder Alley, its only $260.00 shipped to your house. Its hand made. You can get it with a ceramic coating if you like which makes it maintenece free pretty much. It is a littler louder than most stock pipes, but its not horribly loud though.
If you would like to talk to these guys, you can. Email me at Shawn@empirefunding.com and I'll give you thie number.
Rich Rohrich knows who they are. I remember him posting about the Thunder Alley he put on his CRF.
Great pipe, great price

Rich,
Let him run the "glasspack", he is already confused enough! <grin> The cone on a 600 Honda SHOULD start just in front of the kickstart area for correct tuning. As Rich said, easy packaging says stick it after the swingarm pivot and behind the side panel. Won't work very well there, but hey, it is easy to build and with a good "Brand Name" it should sell well!! Build it in Stainless and charge an OUTRAGEOUS price for it is even better. And it normally won't be compared to anything that is designed any better! Since it won't be compared to a Thunder Alley pipe or one like I have built in past years.
