do hard terrain tires have softer rubber?

someone on here said once that hard terrain tires have a softer rubber and they they may not last as long as a soft terrain.. any thoughts on that? i used my intermidate d739's for three years. they worked better in gravel than my new 756's (soft terrain)..

Hard terrain tires have softer rubber so that it "gives" a little to take the shape of the ground contours. Soft terrain tires are harder so they can dig into the dirt to get traction. The terrain you ride on decides more in regards to how long the tire lasts, not really the rubber (it's all pretty durable to a point). Rocks will ruin any tire sooner than mud will.

I've found that the only time that a 739 really shines is when the dirt is like concrete hard. Anything real hard or real rocky, that tire is pretty good. However, the 756 is really a good all-around tire. A 756 seems to work well in hard, soft, rock, sand, whatever you can throw at it. Also, in mud, the 739s are like riding on ice, whereas the 756 is pretty good.

I've been using the Maxxis hard terrain tire and although the rubber is soft it isn't wearing fast. And its great on just about any surface, but especially on hard pack. I used to use the Dunlop D739 but now I'm sold on Maxxis.
