I'm in the market for a newer bike, and I race MX every weekend and practice frequently. I currently hae a 2000 RM125 and I need to decide what to get. I really lke all the reviews and the looks of the 250f, but not sure ifI need one. I'm wondering if I shuld stick with the 2-stroe or not. And if I do end up going with a 2-stroke 12 I also don't know which one is good compared to my RM. I love al the top-end on my RM. PLease somebody reply,I really need some help.THANKS

More info needed.
Weight, age, height, skill level (what class MX?) are good places to start.

I have ridden a couple KX125's, quite a few YZ125's (I have a friends 1996 YZ125 in the garage right now) and a CR125. I have not ridden an RM125 but I have owned a 2001 YZ250F.
IMO, it is going to come down to riding style. With you advancing to the B class I would think that you could ride either bike well (B class riders from my experience tend to know how to twist the little plastic thingy on the right
).
The 250F is a great bike and lots of fun. However, the maintenance involved is close to that of a 2-stroke so you will have to keep an eye out, replace rings, piston, etc. If maintenance of a 4-stroke scares you then stay on the 2-smoke. However, if maintenance is not an issue then go with the 250F b/c in my opinion it is a lot more fun to ride and does not wear you out as much.
Good luck with your decision.

Yeah it all depends on riding style. If you like to rale corners and keap the bike pinned all of the time a new RM fits you perfactly. If you like to lug around corners use power off bottem to clear jumps then the yz250f would work good. I had a 250f for about 6 months before I sold it and got an RM. The reason I sold it was that the parts are very expenceive to replace, Starting and stalling and it just wasn't fiting my riding style wich ment I wasn't as fast or comfortable on the bike.

OK guys, here's my 2 cents. I have raced 2-stokes forever and just bought an 03 YZF250. The YZF is a whole different way to ride. It is a heavy feeling machine that gets incredible traction. However, after riding my YZF for a month I went for a ride on my 02 KDX220 2 stroke and found myself having a blast due to the 2-stroke power. I am going to sell my YZF and buy a 125 2-stroke to race on, which is what I bought the YZF for. My conclusion is this, for mx tracks that are long, fast and wide the YZF could be the ticket. For cut and thrust tracks then 2-strokes are the ticket.

I would go with the 250F, I used to be totally 2 stroke I got a 03 YZ250F back in oct when they first came out. My last bike was an '02 YZ 125 I raced for a year before that an '01 CR125. Spent a good amount of time on a new '01 before I got the YZ250F. At first I thought I made a mistake, the bike felt heavy and akward. Now that i've had it for awhile and that i've gotten used to it I love the bike. I have raced 12 rounds of AX ( 2 classes each round) and quite a few MX races/practices. I have ridden the bike back to back with 2 strokes and I even had my '02 YZ 125 for awhile after I got the 250F and compared it to that directly. Once you learn to ride the 250F properly you'll apperciate how easy it is to ride. I control the bike with the throttle a mass majority of the time. The same situations where I would be down shifting in a hurry of slipping the clutch on my 125 I have found that the 250F I can get away with being lazy and lugging it and it usually responds and get's going with just alittle bit more throttle if you want to take off in a real hurry use the same technique as on a 125 and prepare for it to lift into a wheelie. I won't go back to a 125 now 250F has grown on me in a big way. I love how I can lug and it doesn't complain (doesn't want to foul out at slow speeds) or if I want to scream it, it will scream out rev's the any 125. I also corner the bike about 5 times faster than a 125 I don't do anything different that I did before but I feel like the 250F begs me to drag the bars. It's only down fall to a 125 is it won't be quite as snappy (vortex ignition helps big time) it feels more planted to the grond so it won't float over whoops quite as easly but it's much better at slamming into them it doesn't get knocked off course that easy. Let's also throw in the fact that if you get bored racing the 125 class, you can easyly race in the 250 class or four stroke class. Your bigger than I am, I'm only 5'5" so I'm sure you'll like the 250F more. If it wasn't competetive, then how come honda, suzuki, kawasaki have jumped on the bang wagon pretty fast. Give it some time and most people will probably be riding one of those and those who are still on a 2 smoke will have to work harder to make use of it's lightness and quickness and it takes alot of determination to make use of that. Just some brain storming idea's for ya since most of these guys keep saying get a 125 heh.
