How's it going everyone? This is my first post on this forum. I am looking for a new dirt bike, possibly dual purpose. I am 6'2 and weigh 220lbs. I have not been able to ride a bike in the last 6 years because I lived in an apartment in the middle of the city with no garage. I Have talked to a few dealerships around town and they have all been pointing me in the direction of the CRF230, TT-R225 and bikes like that. I havent been able to test drive any of them yet though. After reading some posts here on the forum it seems like people that are half my size are riding those bikes mentioned. Are these too small for me? I am not looking to get a bike to race around or anything, I want it to take into the mountains and find remote camping spots!!! If anyone could please help me by suggesting a bike I would be very greatful. Thanks

Take Care

I would say you are a little big for the bikes mentioned. Sure, you could have fun on them, but they will be lacking in power and suspension for someone of your size and stature.

If you're thinking of a dual sport, I think the Suzuki DRZ400S/Kawasaki KLX400SR may be your best choice. They are more than competent in the dirt (with knobbies on) and are a pretty good street ride as well. If you're leaning more toward one side or the other (dirt vs. street), there are other bikes out there. If your state has a pretty lax DMV, you could get a pure dirt-only bike and convert it for street use. If you like going up into the mountains and riding on remote trails, this may be a better option.

I'm sure others will jump in with their suggestions. Good luck.

THanks for the response! I think I have ruled out the dual sport now, because it would be about 99.9999% dirt use anyway. Any other suggestions on bikes? Thanks again, Take Care

Ggoga had a good idea, convert a dirt bike to street legal. This would open up a lt more bikes for you.The dual purpose bikes are very heavy and thesuspensionis lacking even for just ridng around in the dirt or trails. After you've ridden for awhile you'll want to do more trail riding. That's where suspension is paramount.Yu want a bike that alredy has a light on it,thern it would be easier to get a kit to go street legal. This topic is over my head but That's what I would do.Since al I know is Honda you might look at the xr 400.It's a proven bulletproof bike tha's a 4 stroke and air cooled. You might think used but recent.Good luck

You can get a KDX brand new pretty cheap.....

Posted by: wkpat81---------------------

When you say cheap, what price are you talking about? Thanks again for the response!!! Take Care

you should be able to get the 03 kdx 200 for around $3700otd.

If I got the Yamaha TT-R225 and did a few mods IE: suspension etc... would that be a decent bike? All the dealers say that that bike would be fine for me. Thanks again, Take Care

I am exactly the same size as you. I test drove the tt-r225 and it is just a little bit too small of a bike for our size. I ended up getting the tt-r250 and I love it. I do strictly trail riding and some small jumps , the bike is perfect. I tried to ask about these bike on this forum as well and alot of these guys are serious riders and just tell you to get a bigger (and more expensive) bike. By the way I paid $3,700 for my tt-r250. Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot for the response, that really helps about the TT-R250, Ill drive that bike when I go there today. Thanks again for the help!!!

wkpat81 -

the TTR225 is, as i've said before, a strong contender for the title of "biggest piece of sh!t on 2 wheels," the other contenders being anything in the KLR line. an old metaphor will help you picture what i'm talking about: you can polish a turd all day long and at the end of the day all you'll have is a shiny turd. so it is with a TTR225.

the TTR250 is a decent bike, but if you want a mellow small bore 4 stroke you're better of with an XR250. get a used XR, ride it till you're tired of it, and sell it for nearly what you paid. while not light by any one's standard, i believe the XR is a pound or two lighter and has a HP or two more in the engine.

Ditto the comments about an XR250. However, you might actually prefer the XR400 which is one very mellow all-around do-damn-near-anything dirt bike. More power than the XR250 with no weight disadvantage. Lots of them out there used.

Won't you just have a filthy, stinky mess on your hands?

The one thing the TTR250 has over the XR250 is electric start - if that's important to you.

Well I can't be quite as eloquent as Jeremiah I will second the fact that the TT-R225 is quite possibly one of the worst bikes available to you. It is Underpowered, overweight and under suspended. The TT-R 250 is a much better bike as are some of the other choices listed ie XR400. If you are looking for even more performance and are willing to live with more noise you might want to look at Yamaha's WR450F.
