I am 32 years old ,weigh 150lbs and looking into buying a cheap four stroke to race in the open class at amateur motocross level . The bike could be a older motocross bike ,converted enduro or trail bike. It also be fun to ride at race pace and practicing with friends.

With your weight there are a few options. Most will come down to how much you want to spend.

I really like the YZ250F. I had an 01 and it was a great bike. I sold it to get the 450 but there are a lot of times I wish I still had the 250F. It makes a great trail bike and a very good mx bike in the vet classes.

The XR250, XR400 or even the older XR350 is not going to give you what you are looking for on the track. They are good woods bikes but on the track they show their weakness in the suspension dept and power is lower considering what you would be racing against.

Not saying that an XR400 would not be an option. I do know plenty of people who do ride and race MX with them but IMO it is not a preferred choice for MX.

Good luck with your decision.

A second hand 2001 YZ250F will cost something like £2800. I wanted a cheap second hand bike for about £1200.

Cost will always sway the final outcome.

What bikes have you seen that are available in your price range?

if your talking about racing on an MX track your probably going to have to consider 2 strokes with that price range.

Not many. xr350 , xr600 87 , xt350 , tt 600 , some other late 80s bikes.

What open class 2 strokes would you recommend at that price.

The XR600 is going to have the most hop up parts and will be reliable but it is heavy and not a good choice for jumping.

On 2 strokes you can get a fairly new KX500 (2000 model) for around $2000 US. Unless you are an experienced rider I wouldn't recommend a 500 2-stroke though b/c they can be a handful.

I have seen some good 97-2000 YZ and KX 250 2-strokes going for around $2000 US. Not sure what the price range is up there.

If you have riding experience the 250 two stroke will not be a bad choice and they have plenty of hop up parts available.
