Ok guys, here's the think. I ride pretty much everything but MX. Fields, tight bush, sand, whoops, trails, etc. I am in the process of selling my '02 drz400s which is done up for offroad. I just found a 2001 WR250 with 746km on it, renthal bars. It is in very nice shape but I haven't had a chance to talk to the guy cause he's always out of town working (I just stopped in and his wife showed me the bike). They're moving, he never uses it and they just want to sell it. Last week he was asking $5100 (CAN)and he just dropped his price to $4600 (CAN) (about $3350 US).
I was looking at brand new '02 models but if I bought this '01 model I could save about $2400 and I could put whatever extras on that I wanted. What does everyone here think? I've researched the wr's to death but never actually ridden one. I"m pretty sure it's the bike I need though. Just need to know if the '01 is good enough compared to the newer models. I've been on TT and read everything there. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

My friend has a 03' wr250f. I dont think you will be happy with the power compared to your 400. I ride a modded xr400, and the wr250f feels wimpy to me. Although, the wire hasnt been cut, and that makes a difference. Throttlestop was ground off, and exhaust was uncorked a bit. It still just doesnt feel like a bigger bore bike. I have heard that the 250f has gotten alot of critical updates in the past year or two, and that newer models are vastly superior in terms of frame, handling, and ergos. I havnt done any real research on them, just hearsay and my own opinions. Everyone has a bike that is right for them.

I have a 01 WR. Its a great bike. I'm 6'3" and 220LBS. I was worrried about the power also. In stock form its a bit of a sleeper. If you do the free mods and get a decent pipe (I recomnd the White Bros E series). you can have a lot of fun. I ride trails, enduros, grand prixs and the occasional Motocross.
It's a great bike for allof it. My only slight complaint is durningthe speed races GP's and MX I'm a little down on power compareed to the open bikes which are legal in the vet class. I like the fact that I can whack the throttle open and the bike jumps without a ton of wheel spin or wheelies. For me its a nice balance and way lighter than a DRZ or XR.
I've riden a several xr400 and used to own a 600. You won't miss any power over a stock XR400 any slight extra power the XR makes it sucks up in weight.
FYI I have the IMS tank and seat(it makes a big diference) + ProAction susp.(set up for my terrain and wieght),
Everyones got there own $.02 but thats mine. good luck.

I just went from a DRZ400E to a YZ250F and I was very surprised at the amount of power the little bike makes. Yeah, it gives up a little bit in low-end torque, but with a ~60 lbs. weight savings, I don't care!
The biggest difference you will notice is in the suspension. I also weigh 175 and it's a lot easier to go faster over rough terrain on the Yamaha. I'd imagine the WR is even better for trails.
As far as new vs. older models, the '03 does have electric start. But I've read that if you put in an '03 exhaust cam in the older models, they will kick start as easy as an '03, which is pretty easy. I don't think there are many differences between '01 and '02 models.

I went from a DRZ-400S to a WR250F. I was thrilled with the change. There is a noticable difference in the low end but nowhere near enough to overcome the huge advantage in lower weight and better suspension of the 250. I'd never go back.
There's little, if any, difference between the 01 & 02 WR250's. Go for the best deal and enjoy the ride.
