Barbed Wire Enduro

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: gxdragon---------------------

I'm looking for information on this enduro. How long of a drive is it from Phila.? Should I camp out/get a room rather than drive there in the morning? Is it worth the ride?

Any information would be appreciated.

Posted by: kelseybrent---------------------

I don't know if you have to be registered to the ECEA site, but here is their link to the information. It doesn't look like STER has a web site. It's in Fassett PA, just below Elmira, NY. I rode it last year, but I don't remember much of it. I had heard stories of riding wooden planks over the tops of barbed wire fences, but they were just stories.

I can email you a copy if this doesn't work.

Come on over, gxdragon--of COURSE it's worth the drive!   I'm the secretary for STER, and will be running sign-up at the event.  (We're still working on the whole website thing.)

The enduro is July 13th.  We're still working on trails, so I don't know how long it will be yet.  We will be going UP the infamous "Slide" this year.  (Last year we ran it downhill).  Nice big reset before the hill, so you can sit and watch other riders attempt it.  (There will be a bypass for the faint of heart).  Other than that, it will be typical terrain--should be lotsa woods, hills, rocks, and a few short road sections.

No more plank bridges over barbed wire fences.  Too many of those have broken down and become unsafe to ride on.

There's plenty of camping on-site, but get there Saturday for a good spot.  Nearest hotels are about 10 miles away.

Should be less than 4 hour drive from Philly.

Lemme know if you want more information.

Posted by: gxdragon---------------------

Thanks for the info. This is my first year riding dirt bikes and enduros. I'm having a lot of fun so I'm trying to do as many enduros as I can. I'm not familiar with the slide but hell what's the worst that can happen :scream:.

Does the loop bring you back to the parking area for gas? I don't have a pit crew so that's a problem if it doesn't.

Lori, I hope to see you there and if there is any other information that you can think of that may be helpful please let me know.

Posted by: LoriKTM---------------------

Not sure how it's set up this year-- if the gas isn't back at the pits, then there will be a gas truck.  Just make sure your can is marked appropriately, and get it on the truck in the morning.  It will be waiting for you at the remote gas stop.

As I get more info, I'll post it here.

Posted by: gxdragon---------------------

Lori, will route information be posted (here or ecea site)? Is that almost finished?

Posted by: LoriKTM---------------------

They're going to be mileaging the second loop this weekend, so probably next week the route information will be ready.  Look over at ECEA website first.  If I can get it, I'll post it here as well.

Looks to be about 70 miles.  The "Slide" is probably not going to be included.  That is in our section, and when we were arrowing and clearing trail the other weekend we found that the land bridge at the bottom of the hill was completely washed out!  There is always the bypass, though.

Posted by: SCHLAVA---------------------

Lori,

Looking forward to coming up to the run. How wet is it up there? Just trying to figure out tire choice.

Mark

Posted by: LoriKTM---------------------

It's BEEN wet (as has everything else!).  Although with this sun and heat, I imagine things will dry out pretty quickly.  We'll be working trail over the weekend, so I'll have a better idea of trail conditions and post more on Monday.

Posted by: LoriKTM---------------------

Trail update:  Well, from what I saw of our small section, things look to be in great shape!  Dirt is nice and tacky right now, with some small mudholes in the low spots.  Expect rocks, some hills, some open fields, and lotsa woods.

Things can get greasy in a hurry if it rains right before the event, and make some of the hills more exciting than they would be normally.  The mileage crew was out on Saturday, so the route sheet should be done soon.

Posted by: SCHLAVA---------------------

Lori,

Thanks for the update. We have some new riders in our club. How would you describe this run in difficulty for C riders?

Posted by: LoriKTM---------------------

Schlava,

Hard to say.  In the past, it's been known as a fairly tough enduro.  Last year we eased up quite a bit, and I think everybody who didn't break was able to finish.  This year, it's going to be more challenging, but probably still a decent run for C riders.  I can't say for sure, since I've never ridden all the trail sections.

If it rains hard the day before or morning of the event, all bets are off.  It will probably be more like a survival run.

Posted by: SCHLAVA---------------------

Lori,

I see there is a 40% chance of rain every day this week. If you live up there could you keep us posted as to whether you actually get rain?

Thanks

Posted by: jmutiger---------------------

Hi guys,

I was wondering what the rules are for entry.. Such as AMA entry fee, and also club entry fee.

Also, if anyone has Lorenz Calgengo's e-mail address, could they forward it to me? jmutiger@msn.com

Thanks,

Jon!

Posted by: gxdragon---------------------

Here is a link to the entry form on ECEAs web site.

http://www.ecea.org/forums/attachment.php?postid=11362

you need AMA and ECEA or WNYOA (details at www.ecea.org or www.wnyoa.net) membership to enter. There are also phone #s on the form you can call for more info.

Lori, are they going to be posting that route info soon?

My bike's in the shop now anyway. I'm hoping to have it back in time and someone to make the 4 hour drive with.

Posted by: LoriKTM---------------------

The pre-entry drawing was on Saturday, so the route sheet should be finished.  I let the guys know that I wanted a copy.  We have a club meeting tonight, so I'll remind them.

I'll update this thread with the weather/trail conditions as things happen.

Posted by: jmutiger---------------------

Gxdragon,

Could you expand on how much these club/licenses will cost me?

Thanks,

Jon!

Posted by: gxdragon---------------------

Jon,
The ECEA enduro license test is free. you can download it and take it through the mail (www.ecea.org/enduro/firsttime.shtml). Or at some races you can take it on the Saturday before the race. You can usually purchase a AMA membership at the race also. All the information you need to take the test is on the ecea website. I don't know the current cost of a AMA membership you can look it up and also join through the internet (www.ama-cycle.org). I don't see these options offered on the barbed wire enduro entry form maybe Lori can answer these questions.

Good luck,
Guy

Posted by: LoriKTM---------------------

As Gxdragon mentioned, the ECEA test is free.  We will be offering it Saturday during sign up for those who need it.   Due to time constraints, the test is not offered on Sunday mornings.

Current AMA membership is $39 per year, and you can get that at either Saturday or Sunday sign up.  If you join thru the internet, you WILL need to bring a receipt to show proof.

If you're serious about signing up at our event or any other, do it on Saturday.  It will give you plenty of time to take the ECEA test and get your AMA membership filled out.  You don't want to mess around with that stuff on Sunday morning, as well as trying to get your bike prepped!

Posted by: jmutiger---------------------

Thanks for the info and links.. I'm still on the fence, gotta talk some buddies into coming along for the ride too..

One last question.. What do these clubs charge for a membership? I wasn't able to find that info online.

Jon!

(So far I'm at $40 for the race, $39 for the licence, and a club fee)

That's it, you only need your enduro riding card from ecea which you get by passing a test and it's free. The only other expenses you'll have will be travel, food, a place to stay (unless you camp out), fuel for your bike and any other parts & accessories you made need to ride.

Posted by: jmutiger---------------------

Gotcha, I see how it works now.

With this test, are you allowed to get any wrong? (I downloaded it, and completed it, but some questions are a bit funny.. If you see someone broken down, aren't you supposed to ride by them yelling are you okay?)

With any luck I'll be there, #154 on a YZ250, with Ontario plates.

Jon!

Posted by: LoriKTM---------------------

Jon, regarding the ECEA test, as long as you do reasonably well you'll be fine.  Most of the questions are common sense, and if there are two answers that might work, use the best one.

Posted by: gxdragon---------------------

Thanks Lori.

Now if I get my bike back on time from the shop, get my brother to stop whining about the long ride and go with me and hopefully this poison ivy clears up enough to be tolerable by Saturday I'll be there.

One more thing can anyone provide the best driving directions from I-476. I've tried yahoo and aol and get two different sets of directions.

Posted by: LoriKTM---------------------

Long drive?  Sheesh, should be 4 hours or less for you.  We drove down to my in-laws in West Chester last weekend, and it takes us 4.5 hours (and we're almost an hour north of where the enduro is!)

I'd take 476 up to 81 to Binghamton, then Rt 17 west to Elmira, as it's 65mph all the way.  Take the Elmira exit, and then Rt. 14 south, but get on Truck Route 14, it'll save some time.  There will be red & white arrows marking the route to the event location.

Weather is looking great!  Trails are in excellent shape.  Even a little rain at this point won't hurt us.

Posted by: jmutiger---------------------

Just wondering how I can find results online to this race.. I wasn't able to make it after a big ride on Saturday.. But I'll make it down eventually.

Jon!

Posted by: kelseybrent---------------------

I heard that Rich Lafferty GC'd, but left as soon as I got loaded up, so I didn't stay for scores.

Great day and a great race. More technical and challenging than last year. I'm feeling the pounding from all those slippery roots this morning.

Lori,
Any word on the guy that got the ambulance ride? I came through when the ambulance was pulling out, with a couple police officers and club workers directing traffic.

gxdragon,
Did you make it to the race and what did you think?

b out

Posted by: gxdragon---------------------

Yeah I made it.

To start I didn't get there until 3am the night before. I couldn't sleep and at the most dozed for about 1 - 1 1/2hrs. I started off fine but at the first hill I found that my rear tire was shot. It just spun and I went nowhere but down. I watched as everyone passed me but I was determined to not let my day end 10 minutes into the race. I didn't see an alternate route so I pushed my bike up the hill to the first plateu. Giving it throttle letting it catch where it could it must have taken me at least twenty minutes. After that I needed about twenty minutes to rest.

exhausted I got on the bike and started riding. I have only been riding a short time and I have never experienced so many wet roots. Every time I thought I had a root or a turn cleared they would send me flying toward a tree.

There were a lot of hill climbs, decents, tight trail and a few jumps a very challenging ride. Probably too technical for my skill level. I got beat up pretty bad but there were a lot of sections that I did enjoy. By the end of the first loop I looked at my clock I had one minute to cover three miles before houring out. So ten minutes later I completed the first loop and called it a day.

Maybe next year I'll be better prepared for a difficult race like this. Lori it was nice meeting you and thanks again for the information.

Guy

Posted by: LoriKTM---------------------

Hey guys, glad you made it out!  Gxdragon, nice meeting you, too!  You might have liked the 2nd loop better-- I think it was a little less technical.  I heard the first loop was pretty brutal-- everyone took points at check 4.   Great weather, and the trail was in excellent condition.  Couldn't ask for better than that!

Kelsey--yeah, Rich Lafferty overalled the event, with something like 17 or 18 points.  Scores will be posted online, but it will probably be at least a couple weeks.  (Kelsey, next time come up and introduce yourself at signup!)

As far as the ambulance trip goes, it was an alleged concussion.  Don't know who it was, though.  I think that was our only incident on the day.

Posted by: dirtybkr---------------------

Come on Lori , tell us about Woodspuppy wuss'n out on that hill . I hear he took second in his class ( probably by ditching all the hero sections )

Posted by: gxdragon---------------------

I'm looking for a few suggestions on tire choice. My bike came with 756s, I thought it handled pretty well at paragon not so well at this race (maybe because it was bald). The races I plan on doing are as follows:
-Rattlesnake
-Beehive
-Moonshine
-scrub pine
-PBER clock run
I'm going to try and make all of these runs I was thinking of getting 739s for the rattlesnake & moonshine runs and 756s for the rest. Does anybody agree with this choice of tires? And should I use the same choice for front and back tires?

I know moonshine & the clock run are not listed as beginner runs but moonshine runs through some of paragon & the clock run runs through NJOHVP. Since I ride both of these areas already I thought I may be ok with the terrain. Am I way off with this?

Posted by: kelseybrent---------------------

I'm running Michelin S12 rear and M12 front. S is soft terrain and M is medium. They work great in sand/mud and hold up well in the rocks, because they don't round off, but chunk a little and leave a sharp edge. Some people don't like the braking characteristics, but I don't go all that fast

What hill? I didn't see any hill. I looked up and the sun was in my eyes, so I just snuck around behind the spectators and took the "zero's" way out.

b out

Posted by: rice1825---------------------

gxdragon. I belong to VFTR, who puts on the Moonshine. The trails are very similar to Paragon. The race isn't easy, but we usually give plenty of resets for riders to get back on time. So you should definitely sign up.

Posted by: gxdragon---------------------

Well I just order a maxxis I/T hopefully it will arrive in time for the race. I looked around and read a lot of complaints about the dunlops wearing out too fast. It also seemed like a lot of the tire choice is just personal preference. So I'll try out some different tires and learn what I like.

Thanks rice. I really like paragon so as long as nothing comes up I should be riding the moonshine. I guess the only way to learn is to get out there and do it and have some fun in the process.

Posted by: SCHLAVA---------------------

GXdragon,

If your going to do rattlesnake you should try to do foggy mountain also which is this weekend. I'll be on row 21. Its a great run. In regards to tires. I love 739's in the rocks. But, I will only use them if its been really dry as they don't shed mud to well. If it might be wet I'll use the aforementioned m/s12 combination. But the rear S12 really doesn't last long at all in the rocks. The 739's hold up very well and you can get quite a few runs out of them I ususally replace them well before their tread is gone because Im more concerned about the beating the sidewalls take and want to avoid flats.
I'm really upset that you don't have delaware on your list of to do runs. Its going to be a great event this year and it won't be a national so it will be much easier than in years past. If you can survive moonshine you can survive our run.

Posted by: JasonWho---------------------

Hello, SCHLAVA. Would you happen to have any used 739's for sale? I have been looking at them on the www.dunloptire.com website.

Thank you,

My son has run them Maxxi I/T on his 100 and found them OK 8.5

On his TM125E (upper B level HS rider) he has 2 races on the rear. 35 miles of Netra's rocks and trail and then Approx 36 miles of sand/topsoil/roots. The tire  may survive after a flip. It cut and sliced alot. Traction was a 9.8 wear is a 7.

Good luck at the Enduro. My club helps VFTR so I may be working a check.

Mike

Posted by: gxdragon---------------------

Schlava & Mike,
Thanks for the info on the tires.

Schlava, don't take it personal I'm trying to choose races that I think I can handle at my level. Who knows if the moonshine goes well I may feel up to doing the Delaware run.

My brother lives in that area and he has been attending DER meetings. I guess he is considered a prospective member. Is he allowed to ride your enduro if he is not a full member or is he excluded?

Posted by: SCHLAVA---------------------

No Im sorry I don't have and 739's for sale.

Gx who is your brother, I'm at every meeting and was vice president for a couple years. He is certainly allowed to ride the enduro while he is waiting for his year to come up for membership. Ususally what we do is if we have people coming up for their membership before our run we like to just postpone it till afterwards and get some good work out of them and make sure they stick around and are serious. What will happen in the case of your brother is, we'll assign him to a section to work on for the race. We ususally are on the trail every weekend of october leading up to the event. He'll be expected to put the time in. But then when it comes time for the race on sunday he can ride it.

Posted by: JasonWho---------------------

SCLAVA: OK, thanks for the reply.

Schlava, My brother's name is Jeff.

Dirt: 03' WR450
Street: Valkyrie interstate (black & red)
drives older models: blue pick up or a red van.

I think he has been going since about March. I don't know what his plans are about this race we haven't even discussed it yet.

Listen here cabin boy... where was you're lazy arse?
At home keeping the couch in place while you stuff your pie hole with ding dongs again, I suppose! This wasn't like that wussy dual-sport ride where you needed 3 tries to get up an easy hill. Of course they did have a few water crossings, but in an enduro I'm not stopping to help you drain water from your bike. Not that I'll know because I'll be so far ahead of you. Had I flipped my tire I would of had a decent shot at Slide Hill. As it was, I didn't want to wear myself out not knowing what to expect for the rest of the ride.

Lori - Your club puts on an excellent enduro. Not a lot of test sections though, which was a good thing for as crappy as I rode in some sections my score wasn't that pathetic. There were definitely enough workers helping the riders out in difficult sections. I also enjoyed the centerfolds stapled to the trees in one section. I was ticked that the 19 mph section turned out to be a transfer section. All the screenwatchers sat on the road waiting to go in on top of their minute. I scanned the rollchart, went in hot and rode the possibles. I would've carded a zero had that been a test section. As it was I took home some hardware for 2nd place in 250-C. BRush, who had an excellent ride took first in Snr-C. Now if dirtybkr ever grows a new pair maybe he'll ride another enduro.
