Getting wife and daughter started

Wife and daughter are both about 5-4. Daughter is 12. Both around 100 lbs each. NEVER ridden before.
I just got 'permission' to get back into the sport...I will be getting a new leftover 02 CR250. (pretty freakin' happy about that!) Whats a good price for a leftover 02 anyways? I have him down to $5200, I was thinking I could get him to $5000 and then use the 2 hundred honda bucks for helmet.
For the girls...I am thinking of XR100 or ttr125. Honda has good finance right now too. I know the xr will last forever, but I dont want them to outgrow it anytime soon. As far as size goes...my wife aint getting any bigger. I was drawn to the CR85 for them...thats what I learned on...but I think it may be too loud, pipey, high-strung, etc for them.
Any opinions?
We will all be doing woods/tight trails. Maybe some HS and enduros for me.
Thanks guys! I am thrilled to be getting back in the dirt.
Also...what is good size trailer that would hold 1 CR250 and perhaps 2 xr 100 size bikes but would also fit decently in a garage?
Would a 5x8 utility trailer work ok?

You can't beat the xr100.Nothing wrong with used but go 93 up.My wife had 2 before she went to the 150.The 100 are like a little burro you can lug in low gear up any hill or trail.Easy to put the foot down and easy throttle.Never rode the the TTR.The L model is about the same seat height as the 100.I think they went electric start this year.My wife is still getting used to the disc brake on the 150 and misses her drum on the 100.The bike dives cause the forks are still dampening rods, and maybe some of her technique. The TTR is heavier if that's a factor

That price for the CR seems high. You should be able to find a 2003 for $5200. Is that price "out the door" or plus tax, title, registration and documents?

One other thing on the leftover - as soon as you buy it, you just bought a "used" dirt bike. In fact, almost a two year old dirt bike, as '04s will be out soon. Just something to keep in mind. To me, if the deal was good enough and I knew that I was going to keep it a while, it wouldn't phase me (I love to save money...). But if you're not sure that you're going to stick with it, you might see what can be done a "new" bike.

I plan on keeping the CR250 for a long long time. The $5200 would have to be 'out the door'.
And then I would also get $200 in honda bucks for gear.
Anyone know much about the crf150 vs. the xr100 for my wife and daughter?
I like the xr, but i think the crf150 might not be outgrown near as fast.

That is way too much for a leftover 02. You can buy an 03 for that same price. Do not pay over 5k for a leftover 02, you are gettting bent over if you do.
For your daughter the XR100 or TTR125 are great bikes for beginners. I bought my 12 year old son an XR100 last year and he loved it. For the wife I would go with the CRF150 or CRF230. Another option for the Wife would be the TTR225. Get her a bike with electric start if she can handle the extra size. Wives(some) do not like to kick start a bike for some reason.
Trust me on that CR, that is way too much for an 02. If you need some sources for 03's with an out the door price for less than $5,300 go to cycletrader.com and look at Honda East and a few others pricing. A 2002 is not worth anywhere near that kind of money. All the replies you are getting over that are for a reason, use that extra money for your wife and daughters bikes.

Thanks! What about out the door for $5000 plus the $200 honda bucks?
Do they normally 'deal' more buying two bikes....like the CR250 and a crf150?
Do they ever get sticker for new bikes?
I've never bought new before.

Last year I bought my kids bikes at the same time. I priced them at 4 different dealers and I found out real quick which dealers I could buy from and which ones were trying to take advantage of me. Buying more than one bike makes no difference to some dealers.
You will also discover that the markup on dirt bikes is very low. That dealer trying to sell you his leftover 02 is trying to get you to pay for HIS mistake. He should have sold that bike over a year ago. Around here, any dealers with leftover 02's are the same dealers that try and rape every customer that comes in the door. The minute you buy that 02 and ride it you have lost $1,500 to $2,000 minimum due to it's age. It will always be worth less than the 03 or 04 you buy now, so you will always be paying for that dealers mistake. I bought the 02 CR250 below my signature line in February and paid $3,500 for it. I would not pay more than $4,000 for a leftover 02 because once the 04's come out that 02 will drop in value to $3,000.
Call one of these dealers, whichever is closer and have them fax you an OTD price on the 03's in their ad. Take that in to you dealer and tell him, here is what I can buy an 03 for so how much less are you going to take for that 02 you should have sold a year ago. I have dealt with HondaEast and their advertised price is the price they will sell for, they do not play games.
If I was you, I would look for a used 02 or 03 and use the extra money to buy your other bikes. Really no reason to buy a new bike unless you just want one.
Brand new 03 prices.

We narrowed it down for my wife and daughter...
either an XR100 or a CRF150. My daughter is 12 and I dont think she would outgrow an xr too fast. I think the xr would be easier to learn on and maneuver. I worry that the size of the crf might be intimidating as it a little bigger than the xr.
Any opinions oin the two bikes? It will be for both my wife and my daughter and they are about the same size. Neither one of them has ever ridden before.

The XR was good for my 12 year old. He adapted too it really fast, too fast. He wanted the CR so his motivation was really high to learn it quick.
The other good thing about an XR is they do not lose there resale value if taken care of. We sold that XR for the almost what we paid for it, of course it helped that we got a good deal on it to begin with. We paid $1872 out the door for it and sold it for $1,800. You won't do that with the CR, in fact you will lose $500 the minute you roll it out the door. That price also did not inlcude any bonus bucks, they didn't have any at the time.

Thanks karterron.
I think we'll go XR based on weight alone. Quite a difference between the two.

Check with Service Honda on getting any or all of the bikes your interested in. Even with shipping they beat my local shops by a significant amount because they don't try to tack on money for every little thing they can think of. There is not a large markup on dirt bikes (especially the XR's) but some dealers feel they need to make the same no matter if it's an XR70 or a Gold Wing, Service Honda is not one of those shops. :thumb:

Do you know if service honda works with honda finance? I'm going through them for the 6.9 promo and have already been approved and all that good stuff.
Posted by: karterron---------------------
Service Honda is where I bought the XR and they were the cheapest in all of the Midwest. Great to do business with and the price they quote you on the phone is the price you will pay when you get there.
