GP star Pit Beirer suffers serious injury

We're sad to report that German GP star Pit Beirer may have suffered a career-ending injury yesterday at the Bulgarian Grand Prix of motocross. Beirer broke his back in the MotoGP race and had to be airlifted from the facility. He is in critical condition and is paralyzed from the waist down. In a report filed by the Bulgarian News Network (BNN): "Beirer has lumbal vertebral injuries and heart and lung haematoms," the hospital chief Lyubomir Spasov said. Spasov said that Beirer could not be transported to Germany in his current condition. He added his wife Ilona was expected to arrive in Sofia Monday.

"After his condition stabilizes, he must be moved to Germany, " said KTM team doctor Klaus Honterschinker in the BNN report. "German doctors will consult their Bulgarian colleagues on this issue. I think that everything necessary is being done for him and that he is in good hands," he added.

I hated reading that too...news of that nature always leaves a big pit in my stomach.

Yes......very very bad news......Pit Beirer is a real balls out kinda rider a bit all over the place, but fast and very exciting to watch and comes across as a real nice guy. Lets just hope he's dented....and not permanently broken.

Yes bad news indeed, but 2smoke, the guy was one of the leading riders to have Josh Coppins kicked out of motocross because of Josh's drug case last year, he openly bashed Josh in the media and wanted him out straight away, and this was from a team-mate. I just saw the Italian GP tonight, and Beirer got 5th, 2nd 2-stroke home, but i want and dont want to see the next GP, sad thing to happen to a great rider.

Ahhh Kiwi the drugs in sport issue is a bit of a horses a$$ really.....more for show than go...and I agree Lizid got rather unfairly roasted about it last year....but we dont like to see happen to anyone really. Last I heard his T5 verebrate (have I spelt that right?) is smashed and the doc's say his chances of walking are very remote.

Ijust saw the GP tonight and they didnt show the crash, but just Pit on the ground trying to get the attenion of the marshells. He was just there helpless. The track is fast, the avg. speed for Everts - the winner was 52km/h.

I hate seeing these reports and hope that the damage isn't permanent.

Kiwi was the GP on Sky? I thought they'd dropped the GP coverage this season.

Latest update is that he regained consciousness, very slim chance that he'll be able to use his legs again. He is off of the respirator and breathing under his own power, and the broken shoulder doesn't need surgery to heal.

Thats still not good but much better than the early report.

Pit is one strong and inspiring individual, look at this pic and see a fellow
from won't let this setback get him down.
The following is a quote from MXlarge:

"I was very happy to receive all those hundreds of emails with your concerns. "
"The past days were tough, but they didnīt break me. Today is the first day of a new life.
See you soon,
Pit

Yep the GP's are on sky, you havent been reading Kiwi Rider have you?? Waste of time now days for reading anything but road bike tests or adventure riding. Anyone see the results int he weekned?? Everts going 1-1 AGAIN!! Winning by 0.3 seconds.

Posted by: Earthpilot---------------------

Yeah two in a row for Everts, about time he got with the program and
traded paint with Pichon in the process!
Is there a good site about adventure riding in NZ?
I am looking into a riding trip there next January.

Posted by: kiwi_925---------------------

www.epicevents.co.nz they are run by an a guy that also does rider coaching and used to be and could still be one of the best off road riders in NZ. I think they use DRZ's.

Anyone see the report on the report about the german international race?? They called up Pit and had a quick interveiw with him, from what i read he sounds like he is in good spirits.

Earthpilot...here are two sites worth looking at.
www.nzadventures.co.nz
www.adventureride.co.nz

Posted by: Earthpilot---------------------

Thanks for the info! Malcom Smith Adventures also has three
tours scheduled in January. I will look into all of them and see what
looks best, and affordable. I have always wanted to visit down there
and I have a friend that just moved "back" to the South island to
run a vineyard near Nelson. Also I heard the 2006 ISDE is going
to be held in Taupo.

Yep it is, so is a World Long track final round thanks to Ivan Maugar (sp), the wininngist speedway rider ever. And he has it for three years, and then also has the oppourtunity to hold a round of the world speedway champs in the following years. He already has the last 3 world champs booked to ride, cant wait till november, its to far away!!
