Race sag

i have a 2001 CR125 and it was suggested 2 me in a thread about a week ago that i should check and set my race sag. i have no idea what this is or how to do it. any help or ideas would be much appreciated.

race sag = measure the distance from the center of the rear axle to a vertical point on the fender while the bike is on a stand. Then have someone hold the bike from the front at the bars while you sit on it in your riding position, feet on the pegs. Have a third person measure the two points again. The difference is your race sag. The difference should be between 90 to 100mm. Adjust with preload on spring.

when u say stand i am assuming u dont mean with the wheels off the ground just the normal triangle race stand. and when u say the spring i am assuming u mean the spring on the rear shock. am i correct? and one more thing is what did u mean by a verticle point on the front fender? sorry about all the questions im just new to this thats all.

Hi Tekno,

On the stand means with the back wheel off the ground, I havent spent the $ on a real stand and use 2 cinderblocks w/ a piece of plywood on top for cushioning. A good spot to measure is the inside of your fenderbolt, almost straight up from your axle. It's important to measure as consistently as possible because a small amt. of sag = a big difference in handling.

I just did my sag correctly recently after hearing people say it over and over again, and my bike went from almost hell to almost pure joy to ride.

Pretty sure my owners manual says 2 turns on the shocknut = 1/3 of sag (inches or cm? probably cm. check your owners manual.

This is an adjustment that can make it or break it.

When I don't want to take the bike apart to get at the nut, I use a hammer and screwdriver on the shocknut(s) and just count how many nubs there are in one rotation.

Rear Fender Bolt.

Spring on the Back Shock.

Get a friend to help you, you will need another person to measure the sag anyway, so kill 2 birds with 2 people

hey thanks chief. i'll get write on to that. would it matter what position my forks where in. like what i mean is should my front whell be off the ground aswell and would it matter how high or low my forks were in the triple clamps. oh and one more thing. do u need a special tool for the shock spring nuts or could i just use the screw driver/hammer method like u do?

To measure the extended distance you only have to have the rear wheel off the ground. I use an old screwdriver and a hammer to turn the shock spring nut.

Are sure YOU use that method, or is it just something you saw the REAL MECHANICS doing down at the shop when you took it in for adjustment?

I said I set it 'Correctly' just recently.

All the other times were My Settings. :o

With the rear wheel off the ground and the locknut and adjuster loose you can turn the spring by hand in either direction to adjust the spring preload.
