Raw Fish

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I had sushi for the first time last night--went out on a date to a sushi bar for dinner. While I had always wanted to try it, I was a little nervous--mostly because I didn't know what to order, how to eat it or anything else. I made my date order for me.

All I can say is YUM. It was really good! We had a few different things, including octopus, salmon roe, and some kind of roll with 3 different kinds of fish, rice and avacado. I really liked it. I even handled my chopsticks without a problem.

Just thought I'd share that with you all.

Posted by: oldguy---------------------

When our goldfish dies I'll be sure to mail it too you for a snack

Posted by: dirty~d~---------------------

Sushi is EXCELLENT!!!! The Octopus is like chewing rubber, but everything else is really good. :thumb: Do you remember what you tried? Most rookies start off with California rolls and Tuna rolls, but since you're a stud I'll bet you went straight for the heavy stuff.

Posted by: IrishEKU---------------------

I'll continue to grill my sword fish and salmon.

Posted by: Zerotact---------------------

Actually, sushi is a general description of stuff rolled into a roll woth rice and seaweed. Sushimi is the type of sushi with raw fish. Some of my favorite types of sushi actually contain cooked fish. For example, a spider roll, it's a deep fried soft shell crab, rolled up with avacado, rice, and some other stuff....

Posted by: firecracker22---------------------

We did have california rolls, and also rainbow rolls with avacado, yellowtail, tuna and salmon, the little rolls with salmon roe and something else in it (couldn't see what it was and didn't want to dissect it but it tasted good), octopus with rice and wasabi, and I can't remember what else. So wasn't really "heavy" stuff but next time I will experiment more. I just let Keith order for me because he knew what he was doing better than I. He did mention spider rolls, they sounded good, but we decided in favor of something else. There was even one with salmon and cream cheese but that sounds a little Americanized . . . might try it next time.

I am just proud that I managed to eat neatly with chopsticks, something I can't accomplish with fork and spoon. Maybe I should switch?

Ahhhh, Sushi!  One of my favorite topics!

You gotta try the Spicy Scallop Hand Roll - way yum!  Every time I have sushi with someone I get them to try it and they absolutely love it.  I'm a big fan of the Miso Soup, customary starter for sushi lovers.  Salmon Skin Hand Roll is another favorite.  I like to customize my rolls depending on how I feel.  Usually, Yellowtail and Ahi are on the top of my list.  Sometimes if I'm not doing carbs I just order that with no rice.  There's a name for no-rice sushi, but its eluding me right now.

Other cooked varieties are the whole shrimp head, fried, inside a roll with other goodies. I have to get my mix of wasabi and soy sauce just right for accenting the sushi.  I like the tiny fish roe, but the bigger ones remind of of something in my tackle box.....oh wait

You did good with the Rainbow Roll for a rookie.

Posted by: KiwiBird---------------------

Sushi! Yum! I'm a big favorite of salmon skin rolls and if I'm in the mood for $7 a roll I like the spicy salmon tempura roll.

Posted by: Zerotact---------------------

I always pay the next morning if i have too much wasabi....

Posted by: High Lord Gomer---------------------

Mexicon food with hot peppers hurts both ends, but wasabi is only hot for a bried moment on the way in.

Interestingly, the "real" wasabi I've bought that came from the actually Japanese plant was never as hot as what I normally get around here. It is just powdered horseradish and mustard that is reconstituted. The Target stores sell it in their spice section. I mix it up (with hot water) in a shot glass whenever I bring sushi home.

My 5 year old loves California rolls. I've never let him try any raw fish, but he has tried the wasabi...ONCE!

Natalie...are you thinking sashimi?

Here's a neat site to make you salivate... http://home.wanadoo.nl/davidlai/English.html

Trivia Question -

Why don't you see (many) women Sushi chefs?

Posted by: Okiewan---------------------

I'm not touching that one Kiwi...

I DO NOT EAT BAIT.

FRESH smoked salmon and Blue Points are as close as I get.

Posted by: MrLuckey---------------------

I can tolerate sushi etc. but if we're gonna eat something raw, lets talk about steak tar tar. A slice of rye, a bit of raw ground beef, green peppers & raw onions, salt & pepper. WooHoo, the best hangover medicine known to man

Posted by: SirThumper---------------------

I don't eat anything raw!

Posted by: Jaybird---------------------

(gag)

Posted by: KelvinKDX---------------------

Sharla - welcome to the world of raw fish.

I used to work in Japan a lot and have eaten my share of raw fish - yum.  The best is in the fishing ports where you can get the fish that are brought in that morning.  You just point to the one in the tank that you want and in a few minutes it's on your plate.

I did have a serving once whree the fish was just skinned (with the head left intact) and you ate the meat off of the bone - wish i had a video camera because a picture would not have done it justice.  You could put your chop stick in its' mouth and it would bite down from reaction!

I had a buddy in Korea who would go fishing with just a fishing pole, fillet knofe and a bottle of hot sauce.

Posted by: JuliusPleaser---------------------

:thumb: Broaden those horizons! One of my friends can mow down $75 worth of sushi/sashimi at a single sitting. I'm still a rookie. I've only had it 8 - 9 times, but it's growing on me.

Next up: TOFU! I tried it at PF Chang's last week, and the texture was a little. . .um, nasty. I was looking for a place to hurl.

Posted by: dirty~d~---------------------

Tofu sauteed in garlic butter with sliced mushrooms, poured over rice... :thumb: Think of the texture of tofu as being similar to scrambled eggs... unless scrambled eggs don't do it for you. Then I'd have to suspect there's something wrong with you.

My first sushi experience: some smartass fellow medical resident got me drunk on Saki and took me out for Sashimi. I did reasonably well until some sort of goopy Orchid testicles (or some kinda sexual organ) went down wrongly, wrongly--and back up through my nostrils with a chunk of wasabi....one of the most painful experiences of my life, even while my brain was pickled with 2 carbon anesthesia.

Just thought I'd share, for those that haven't tried it yet.

Doc,

That's my take on it sober. :thumb:

what about those 'escargots' I saw you eat at Chez Jean in Indy?

Sushi/Sashimi: heavenly food, once a week necessity for a balanced diet!

the only Japanese food that disappointed me was/is Yakitori (charcoaled chicken) very too much dry.... at least what was served by those street-vendors in the Ginza ...Yuk!

Salmon Roe?!

My mental image of salmon roe is the stuff that is forgotten and left in the pocket of my fishing vest for a couple weeks. :scream:

I could never do it. Not no way, not no how. I'll leave the fish inards to be enjoyed by other fish..........and seagulls (aka flying rats).

Amazingly enough, those foul creatures used to be endangered here in Michigan. Now they are "protected" and every land fill site is covered with them!

The things I learn on DRN! When were "dump ducks" endangered in Michigan??? I sure don't remember that!

Mark,

If my memory is correct, it was at least thirty years ago, maybe more. I believe you can get yourself in a bit of trouble for killing them.

I think I'll just have a burger, thankyouverymuch

Posted by: 70 marlin---------------------

Gotta watch out for that green stuff!
Anybody ever been fishing for dump ducks? When I was very young I was very bad!

They are still protected around here . . . you will get a fine if you are caught shooting one. I don't know why they are protected, they are certainly not endangered. I grew up on a lake--they are EVERYWHERE. We shot them anyway of course.

Posted by: BadgerMan---------------------

I did a google search and found this:

Although humans no longer kill Herring Gulls to satisfy a heavy commercial demand for their feathers, their activities still have negative effects on the birds. In the mid-1960s and early 1970s, Herring Gulls nesting on the Great Lakes were found to be experiencing reproductive failure — although there were lots of nests, there were hardly any chicks to be found. Detailed studies showed that early deaths of embryos and abnormal parental behaviour during incubation were at least partly responsible for the reproductive failure, and scientists suggested that high levels of organochlorine compounds (including polychlorinated biphenyls or PCBs, DDT-related compounds, and mirex) in both adults and eggs were to blame.

I remember a similar discussion from science class many moons ago. Here's the entire article:

http://www.cws-scf.ec.gc.ca/hww-fap...ecies=21&lang=e

The article says they are protected because they are migratory birds and not because they are endangered. I read another article where a town in Wisconsin is now shooting a controlled number of gulls to lower their numbers. Gulls have caused e-coli problems in other areas around Lake Michigan, so I have heard.

Flying rats, dumpster ducks, pretty foul creatures IMHO.

My apologies for side tracking an otherwise tasteful thread.

Yum!!! Fresh Salmon box is my favorite, but being a cajun i eat just about all of it. raw oysters....raw fish its all the same to me. :thumb:

I have to agree that the rainbow roll for a starter is very bold. Be careful I find sushi to be like riding the more you do it the more you want it.

Posted by: bclapham---------------------

the thing with the Japanese is that they have so much technology developed there, yet all they could come up with as far as eating utensils is a pair of sticks.

Posted by: hoosierf---------------------

While eating sashimi at Nick's in Chicago, I mistakenly popped the "large olive" on my plate" into my mouth. I don't know what I was thinking, but the "large olive" turned out to be a big chunk of wasabi diguised as an olive. I had a tablespoon of the stuff in my mouth and was hopping around like my foot was on fire.

Going out for sushi tonight for my birthday. The chef we frequent makes a kick-ass yellowtail roll. Hey FC22, if'n you've heard of an Alaska roll but haven't tried it, TRY IT! Tempura rolls are tasty too. Yup, hibachi steak w/ some sushi for appetizer...I'm like Homer w/ little chocolate donut thingys around that stuff.

Posted by: nephron---------------------

CR Swade--go to the Melting Pot, instead. When Fondu came out (again.. :silly: ), I was very negative about it and wondered why anyone would want to sit around and dip food into some Velveeta crap or something, and was blaming the entire thing on another bandwagon, fad society thing that Generation Next or X or whoever brought out of Manhattan.

I was surprised, to say the least. Give it a shot with a really good bottle of extra Dry Champagne and go for it.

Posted by: CR Swade---------------------

I've heard of it, just never got around to trying it.

There is actually a new-to-KC restaraunt called the Kona Grill, and I think we might hit it this weekend. It is my favorite right now-plus they have great Kona joe and fresh macadameia nut pie. They have two other locations in Arizona and it friggin rocks. The sea bass is unbelievable and yes, they serve sushi. I just can't order the sea bass without snickering, thinking of our ol' buddy and his "wine em', dine em', 69 em" hat (yes I'm speaking of Sea Bass himself-kick his ass Sea Bass!!)

Posted by: nephron---------------------

My brother eats there frequently. I'll have to try it.

Posted by: MX2_motorex---------------------

I LOVE SUSHI every time we go to the china restruant we order a half pound of sushi and a bunch of that really hot green sauce. We tried every kind of sushi at that restruant. Then we tried makeing our own sushi that was gross yuk. Fake sea weed is the nastyest thing ever, the fish was good though.

Happy birthday!

I will look for those 2 things to try. I can't wait to go again. I'm hungry . . .

Posted by: BCR-Bob---------------------

You may also want to try Unagi, it's fresh water eel, and it's cooked. Try a couple pieces next time, if you like the salmon and tuna, you'll like it.

O-K, I'm officially stating for the fact that that is EWWWWW!

EEL, yuck! Great Striper Bait, but after seeing Lampray's feed on Salmon, EEL's = Bait, Food= YUCK!

Posted by: BCR-Bob---------------------

Yea, you for sure don't want to think too much about when you sit down to eat. Just go blindly into the fog, kind of like a desert race.

Posted by: CR Swade---------------------

Ahhh, unagi...me thinks the only sushi that is better would be fresh yellowtail, or maybe spicy tuna. I lost my sushi virginity to unagi and it is a mainstay on the tray. Most tasty rolls have unagi in them somewhere.

Posted by: placelast---------------------

There's something wrong with all of this, my friends, besides the "yuck!" factor, and that's parasites, moreover worms - the best chef's eyes can't possibly get all of the foreign eggs and critters out - you're bound to intake some...there's a reason why fire came along.

Posted by: XRpredator---------------------

fire GOOD!

Posted by: High Lord Gomer---------------------

Silly...wasabi kills all known parasites and if it doesn't, the saki makes you not care!

Oh, I get it: edible innoculation!

Have at it, but I'd rather not swim, than jump in a pool with pee and chlorine.

Tuna, salmon, eel, and an Austin roll with extra Wasabi just the other day. Good stuff! :thumb: :thumb:
