Pit Brier Update

Last thursday (7.10.03) Pit Brier was operated on his spine much earlier than originally planned thanks to his recovery moving at a fast pace. Here is what the KTM man had to say after his tough fall in Bulgaria.
The doctors saw my energy and spirit and decided to give priority to this last and very important operation. If they waited any longer the surgery would have caused a big cut into the progress I have made so far.
The complicated procedure took six hours, With micro-tools and camera's they went into my body on the right side to reach the spinal column. For this action the lung was emptied one more time.
They removed the parts of the 6th broken vertabrae. From my hip
they took bone tissue to form a new vertabrae and put this into the spinal column. The three vertabrae are now held together by metal plates.
This all sounds quite terrible and the doctors told me after the operation there could be problems with waking up and breathing similar to the first operation. Luckily it was not that bad.
I woke up quite fast and started to breath myself immediately. Beside the pain, which I keep under control with morphine I feel already well again. The doctors informed me that the surgery went well and after approx two weeks of rest I can continue with my recovery programme. This operation will give me more stability to my spinal column. It's my aim to go home for the first time in 2-3 weeks, and attend the GP in Gaildorf at the end of August.

That's pretty amazing stuff. Sounds like a tough dude, glad to hear he's doing okay. I have not figured it out, is he permanently paralyzed from the waist down or not?

Thats amazingly impressive he can muster a smile for the camera-he is one tuff dude who deserves respect.
