Ok, here's a good one, I bought my CRF used from a guy and he overtightened the bolt for the plastic engine protectors, left side over the oil filter housing. Well it stripped out the fastener that is in the frame, I'm not talking threads I'm talkin about the whole thing, any Ideas from you guys? I need to add a guide plate and the one I'm looking at uses that hole also for the metal protectors also.

How about a helicoil to replace the stripped out fastener?  You can get them in 6M & 8M sizes.

This fastener is one of those that is kind of like factory crimped in the frame, it's hard to explain, all thats left is a hole, no threads to helicoil.

A nut-sert may be a better idea. They are made to install threads into thin-walled metal such as tubing. Wait, that's an aluminum frame, I'm sure that's what they use at the factory. You should be able to drill or grind it out and replace it.

This photo is probably better:http://www.hpphoto.com/servlet/LinkPhoto?GUID=93a69002-6bbf-11e8-2210-2ddd631a234d&size=

Yeah - from the picture it looks like what we refer to as a riv-nut in the automotive industry.

Posted by: thinliner---------------------

It's kind of a bad picture, but it just sat a spun in the hole, ended up pulling it out with vise grips.

Is it possible to drill through the other side and use a nut and bolt? Would this lead to a weak spot in the frame?

I feel your pain thinliner. When I had my CRF I had the same problem. To get the bolt off you have to wedge a flat blade screw driver behind the guard and use an air gun to remove the nut. If you wedge hard enough with the screw driver it should come right out. As far as a fix for it....your own your own with that one. I sold it before I fixed it. We took a punch and oblonged the sleeve in the frame. It helped, but doesn't cure the problem. A buddy of mine and I were contemplating carefully bonding the lip of the sleeve to the frame with J-B weld. You'll probably have to rough up the surface of the aluminum a little, but I think it might work. Good luck and let us know how it turns out. :thumb:

Hey thanks, I don't feel good about drilling straight through the hole. I think possibly tiggingup the hole drilling it out and then what I don't know. You hit the nail on the head exactly Flynbryan, thats word for word how I got that bugger out.Sounds like a bad dream does'nt it? Wonder if I could get my hands on one of those fittings. It just has to be tightened in the hole to expand out to hole like a molly screw set up right?

It might also be a good time to call the dealer too!!!

Anyhow, it'll have to wait till I get back from Jellystone Park, time for some relaxation.

The Riv Nut is stripped out you can get a metrivc kit from MAC tools . i have one . On a KX subframe they always came loose esp KX5s and wed have to put a new riv nut in now & then . A local Autobody shop might have one. GOOD LUCK

Posted by: thinliner---------------------

Hey thanks deansfastway, I'll check on that lead, sounds like a good one!

Posted by: thinliner---------------------

Good news,
Went down to my friends bodyshop and he had the rivnut tool to get me back in business! thanks to all for your info and suggestions, much apreciated!
