250 Enduro carb problems...

Hi,
I'm new to this site. I am having trouble with a 1979 Yamaha Enduro 250. I just had the carb done at a Honda shop, a shop that I deal with all the time for my own bike, so I know the guys, and they're good. But... this carb (and I must admit I don't know much about it) after installation, the bike fired up ok, didn't run that great, no power, really boggy... and when I shut the engine off, it started spitting gas out of the air intake side of the carb, from between the carb and the air box. I hadn't hooked the airbox up to the carb yet, so it was just dribbling out onto the engine. What is the problem with that? How should I fix this one?
Any one have any ideas that will work?
