Hey Guys,

My buds XR4 won't shift above 3rd (actually slips out of 3)

Before I get too far into it..anyone have any thoughts as to possible causes or what too look for?

I have split the cases on this bike to replace a shift shaft before so getting into it does not scare me too much I just don't want to tear it down any farther than I need to if I don't catch the problem due to my ignorance.

Is the shifter rubbing the case and prventing full storke? If not, sounds like bend shift forks or a worn or broken shift drum (cam) or the bearings or bushings the cam is on. Sounds like your gonna have to split the case again. Cant wait for them make a case that you can pull a side cover and yank the tranney and guts out of. Then again I once worked on a little Harley mini bike that was like that and what a PITA to get everyting lined up in the right hole and back to gether,,,

I have you thought of a bent shifter fork? It could be bent and binding up or not seating proper in the drum so that it does not lock in correctly. The little dogs on the end of it could be to worn out as well. Not sure about the XR, but I've had problems with the shifter rachet assembly (shifter star) on my DR. It sets just behind the clutch basket on my bike so you do have to split the cases to get at it. You can also replace the shifter shaft with splitting the cases to. Good luck. My guess would be either of those.
