My 8 and 1/2 year old son is ready for a new bike. He won a trophy on his Tomos 50 a couple of months ago, at the track, so the MX bug has hit him. I would like to get him a KX65 but we do most of our riding on logging roads and forest trails. Wondering if anyone has any experience with trail riding on a 65?

My son rode the heck out of his 96KX60 on the track & on the trails without too much trouble and his was set up for MX by the previous owner who was strickly an MX rider. He had to learn how to control the clutch on the more technical stuff but it made him a better rider. After a few stalls & a bit of frustration he got the hang of it on some pretty technical trails.
I remember a ride with some kids that were 3 years older than him, he's on his 60 and they are on XR100's. We stopped at a challenging little hill, the kids all stopped to size it up, he pulled up, stopped, looked back at them & said "follow my line" brapbrapbrap. After that they all just followed him.
He's now on a CR80R and the 60 has gone to my 8 yo daughter. She came off of an LEM LX2 and an old 74MR50 (3 speeds with a clutch). Now that she's figured out how to use the clutch to help control her speed she rides on some pretty challenging singletrack and does great.
In my opinion they are great bikes for both uses.

Yeah, I don't think it should be a problem to trail ride with one.
The Kawasaki mini bikes have some smooth powerband, nice lower end (expecially on the 65 as i hear), and nice throttle response, and should be able to be trail ridden pretty nicely as well as ripping up the MX track
