Advice on bikes for some newbies

I'm selling my boat and buying some bikes for me and the wife. I'm 6'2" 230lbs, pretty strong guy who wants to be able to tool around with the wife and ease my way into some MX type stuff and jump off ****, My better half is about 5'6" 125lbs. Any recommendations for bikes that would be good for us. I want a reliable bike, and one that neither of us would grow out of in 6 months. Thanks for your help.

Spent the better part of 2 hours searching threads and have some thoughts.
I've never really rode a motorcycle so I need to learn not to kill myself first.

Thinking of a YZ125 or RM125. Figure I can get some good use and learn how to really thrash it before I move up to the bigger bikes, or is this too small for my weight? Thanks...

the 125's might be a bit much for a couple who haven't ridden before, but i'm not aware of your experience. if you've never ridden before, i'd recomend looking into the larger displacement xr's for yourself, and maybe a crf 230 for the wife. just fill us in on your experience and i give you some specific bikes...

oh, and the 125's should be fine if you know how to ride. if you are an advanced rider, consider the 250's.

Well, exactly where and what kind of riding will you be doing? A major factor in this decision.

About the wife, I think she would be best on either a CRF-150 or a CRF-230. See which one she likes best, allthough I think a 230 might be a bit too big for her. I'm actually trying to get my wife to get a trail bike, so I could use it too of course!, and as much as I would love her to get a KDX, I know she wouldn't be very happy, so I think we are going with the CRF-150.

@230 lbs, I wouldn't recommend a 125. They need high RPMs to stay in the power. A great beginner bike is a KDX200 or 220. They're plentiful, popular, reliable, and affordable. With a little engine and suspension work they can be very fast. It's the only bike that has it's own Forum here on DRN. That should tell you a lot about them.

As for your wife, let her sit on a few and see what size is comfortable for her. A nice smooth 4 stroke with electric start, like a Honda XR would be worth a look.

I myself have only rode four wheelers and not all that much. I'm pretty much new. I want to be able to ride some of the local motocross type tracks when i get the hang of it. But i don't plan on racing, so a dedicated mx bike probably is not what i want then.

The wife has owned a cbr 600 about 4 years ago but hasn't rode since, we are both new to the off road gig.

We will probably do trail riding but some of our friends ride motocross and she is interested in that too. I personally need a bike with great range, I want to try jumping some, do a little mx action and just ride and have fun.

Any suggestions as to a good bike for either one of us would be great thanks.

A great decision would be waiting for the new Honda CRF250X.

It would be the perfect bike for offroading and enough suspension bringing to the track to get the best of both worlds as much as possible.

Also consider the KDX200. I see a bunch of KDXs on the tracks, and they really, REALLY look tempting right now :D

I ride a KX 125 and I am about 5'11 150 lbs, and thats pretty ideal, and I think you might be a bit too big for it and might grow out of it, and eventually want more bike.

Well went out and looked at some bikes today and have two types of bikes in mind for me and the wife. My first choice is based upon all the good things i hear about the Kdx

1) KDX200 for me, and the KLX 125L for the Wife

2) DR250 for me and the DR 125 for her

3) WR250f for me and the TT125 for her

I'm leaning toward the Kawasaki's because the I again hear so many good things about the KDX,,, but Yamaha financing makes thier four stroke engine attractive.
Now the dude at the shop said there isn't much differnce between the 2 stroke KDX and the 4stroke powerplants as far as being able to keep up with some of the 125 motocross bikes. He said the 4Strokes would be a lot easier to ride on the trails and such, plus less worry about the fuel, oil mixture. What is your recommendations and such. thanks ,,, Paul.

Horsefeathers!

But I will agree that having one two stroke and one four stroke will require two gas jugs.

I'm biased toward two strokes, but that's just me. I like the sound, I like the smell, I like the simplicity, I like the power.

Not real sure but I think the WR250F would be a better bike in terms of power and suspension than the DR. Take a closer look.

Yuck! LOL

I would say go KDX!

You can get an acumix gas can that allows you to mix gas and oil on the fly. Then you only have to take one gas can to the gas station, and then mix the 2 stroke gas as you need it.

Well I think I've made my decision,

Going with the KDX200 found a 02 model that hasn't been rode yet, at a local dealer and a ktx125 for the wife. Still haven't put her butt on it yet but if all holds well then thats the way i'm gonna go. Thanks for your help.

Bowski-For your size and interest in both track and off road I think you made a good choice for yourself. You will want to modify the suspension and header on the 200 at some point and probably go with an aftermarket handle bar also.Gotta tell you the 2 stroke for the Mrs. might not be the best at this point. Here's my 2 cents.Even though she has some experience the 125 is a track bike, race bike.I's not beginner friendly and that's a big deal. You might consider a used XR 200 or the newer 230 or 150 CRFs.One other reason I mention this is the 125 needs a lot of clutch on the trails and there's little bottom end.The track is a different story.I know your both going to have fun either way. It's to bad she can't ride a 125 or at least sit on one before you buy.

The street bike equivalent of a KX125.

Is that what you meant by ktx125???

But I agree that the KDX is a great choice. Definitely a bike that you can grow into.

I think you'll find he means KLX (option 1 mentions it). One problem may be height for her. You'd definitely need a big wheel, but even then it may be too small. Check out the CR150F as I think that's a bit taller & may be just what she's after.
Another bike to check out for her would be the Gas Gas Pampera, which is a trials engine in an enduro frame.
