i've been doing enduros, and thought it would be fun to try a desert race. any advice? i'm planning on starting in cruise mode and seeing how it goes. are you allowed to pre-ride hare scrambles courses? anyone done this event before? it's two 55 mile loops, so i'll need to at least throw in a gallon of gas after the first loop.

mark,

I'm a fellow enduro guy from IL who just did his FIRST desert race last weekend (bushwackers harescramble in Pioche, NV).
It was a 21mi. "tight, technical" w/trees section, followed by a 41 mi. loop best in desert style.
You would be surprised what these desert riders consider technical woods riding is actually a nice flowing 2nd gear trail through evergreens that opens up fairly often. I felt way fast in the first loop. The second loop was more wide open stuff which those desert guys may pull away a bit.
It was a stradle fender start and motocross style mass start. I got greedy and was taken out while trying to pass someone, so I had to come from behind the whole race. there's no time to hesitate, with only a few minutes separating the classes. The trails were better marked than any enduro or local hs i've seen. They mark most every boulder, drop off, g-out with level of danger, so you can decide how to avoid trouble. I ended up about 6th in the novice class. I had a blast and cant wait to do another one. enjoy!!!!.

Curt - Congrats man! Now come out East and ride a Brand X Enduro. Forget all that crap you've heard about New England rock gardens being tough. Any spode can ride them. :scream:

Woods,
Where would I have heard that?????? It's on my list of things to do!
How about meet me in vegas next year for some fun....and a hare scramble!!!

I don't think theres many desert guys on drn??? Don't worry about the heat, its nothing if it's dry, but drink plenty of water before the race.
