Im looking for a new bike, i really like the new rmz250, i currently race a rm125 and im getting a big bore kit in it with in the next month or so, i love my 2 stroke but the new bikes are fast and i see alot and hear alot of good things about the new 4 strokes, i race 125c and ride the woods and trails oftan, should i switch ? what is your guys opinions ? i've ridden 2 stroke all my life, should i leave the sweet smell of pre mix ?

Best advice is ride before you buy. The new RMZs are going to be scarce but there are so many YZF250s out there that you ought to be able to get a ride on one to feel the diff for yourself.

I'm more an off-roader than a MX guy and I switched back from thumper to 2 stroke last year. To me the 2 strokes are just more fun to ride, cost less to own, and are more natural jumpers. I think you'll find the RMZ will be easier to ride fast on an MX track due to the wider torque curve than a 125 2 stroke, but 4 strokes take some getting used to. They weigh a little more, carry their weight higher, and engine braking means you have to be very careful to not chop the throttle on a jump face. But at least the starting problems on the newer ones are less than they were a couple years ago.

The other thing to keep in mind is thumpers do require more maintenance (i.e.- oil/filter changes, valve adjustments) and if one breaks it will be a lot more expensive than a 2 stroke.

yea i would follow his advice i would ride one of my budys 4-strokes or if they didnt have one try renting one first cause let me tell you ive ropde 2-strokes all my life and i tried hoping on my budys yz250f and it was hell it was like trying to learn to ride all over again.you cant even use clutch on 4-strokes eccept to stop and go.but they do not requir as much maintinance but when they do break it will cost you alot more to fix

I would bore your 125 out or get a KDX200. The KTM 200EXC isn't bad either. I'd stay off the four stroke.

About the maintinance, the KDX is maintinance free unless you like to tinker with it. It is easy to modify too. A very reliable bike.

Between my boys and myself we have a 03 YZ 450, 02 KX 250, 99 Gas Gas 321 trials and a 00 KX 125 with a Eric Gorr 144 kit. I'm old, fat and slow and I love the 144. Its ported for more mid range and 92 octane. Its fun and easy to ride. We put my wife on it to practice riding before going to Utah and it went well for her. Its plenty fast and very reliable. The new thumpers are really sweet but hard to justify when this works so well. I know what you mean though .. 4 stroke sound or pre-mix smell . God help me I love em both.
