KLX125L or DRZ125L or TTR125L

I borrowed a buddies TTR and it was a hoot so, now I want one. Looking at the specs for these three bikes they all appear pratically identical so, any thoughts?

Heh, that's pretty much what I was thinkin' - just different colors.
...'cept in red's case 'cause it's also 40 pounds heavier.

Honda probably makes the most reliable thumpers in my opinion. The only thing I hate about the XR line is the poor suspension, but then again for those type of bikes you wont expect much more from other brands.

I would say go CRF-150 if you are getting a small 4-stroke thumper trail bike, but how tall are you and what is your weight? an where and what kinda riding will u be doing? why not look at something like a 85cc 2-stroke or 100cc 2-stroke that way you can smoke everybody.

Yeah, I was looking at the CRF150 - it's a little more expensive and alot heavier. The biggest advantage I've heard is that it has a better frame (and 25cc's) but, that I could buy a frame brace for these three which'll make 'em about even in that regaurd only without the massive weight penalty but, I'm not so sure I'll be at a point where I notice these issues for a little while anyway. Suspension wise, I figured that which ever bike I get is going straight to the local suspension shop for new springs and valving so, that's not a real big deal either. Basically, I picked these three 'casue they were cheap and light.

...as for smokin' people that is NOT an issue. I just wanna goof around and have some fun as I stick my big toe, so to speak, into dirt ridin'.

Well, I think alot of people said that before they started getting into riding. You never stated your weight and height, budget, and or your riding types you will be doing (for example: trail riding, opened feilds, dirt roads..) and it could make all the difference in the world when people are trying to help you with your decision.

And you certainlly don't want to get a bike that you might grow out of quickly.

As for what kind of riding I'm gonna do, I have no idea. Originally I was interested in flat tracking but, recently discovered that jumps are really cool too. So, I dunno but, one of those - trail riding hasn't really captivated me at all yet.

I was just talking to my local suspension shop - askin' what they thought and Phil just raved about how great the XR100 is. Hmmmmmmmm.

I own an XR 100, and its a great bike. However, I am 5'6 and it is too small for me. I am buying a KX 100 for christmas however, and at over 6 foot, the XR 100 or TTR/KLX/DRZ 125s are going to be way too small for you.

At first I thought you were looking for a pit/play bike. At your height/weight, you would be better off with a late model KDX200 - The bike is light, easy to ride and maintain, and can grow with you. These can be had for under $3000 - check out http://www.cycletrader.com

If you are a beginner, you may also want to consider the TTR250 or DRZ250, both have electric start.

The TTR didn't feel too small but, I don't know nuthin' about nuthin'. I do know that a bunch of people my size and bigger flat track 'em locally and the XR100 is what American Supercamp uses to instruct people of all sizes on so, I'm not overly concerned about size/power.

Oh, it's absolutely a play bike for goofin' around with buddies! Having a pit bike as a side affect is just a happy bonus!

Dang, your 6' and you want a CRF150? I'd at least get a 125 2 stroke. If you are going to do some woods a KDX or 200EXC would fit. Are you a very expirienced rider? I'd get a 125(which ever brand fits you best) because you can jump, race, ride trails, and take it on a flat track. You might like the power of a 250F for flat track.

You definatly arn't going to smoke any one on any 125 4 stroke. I considered the TT-R when I was like 5'2" I got a RM80 instead and loved it. You can put around on a 2 stroke(esp. a KDX) but get on the pipe and really smoke them if you want. Are you ever doing to do any serious riding or do you basicly want a overgrown pit bike? Once you get this bike it could be your last(unless you grow to be 7'5" or trade it off and spend twice the money).

Yeah, it's lookin' like maybe I'm getting way ahead of myself - I just had boat laods of fun last weekend and decided I need to do more of this NOW! I guess logically, I should just go buy some of my own gear and mooch bikes until I figure out what I want to do.

...stupid logic.

Makes perfectly good sense to me..

A bunch of people buy bikes just to have fun on, but then don't realize how much they eventually get into it, and if you get seomthing like a TTR 125 you are going to grow out of it very quicky at that height and weight!

I would look for a used 125 cc 2-stroke. That would be great for you. They are not that much money used at all for 2-3 years old, since they loose their resale value pretty quickly. You can probably find something like a 2001 125cc bike for 2500$

If you want something real cheap get a old XR250. You can put around on that and fix it up every 10 rides.

I agree that you will probably outgrow the TTR125L pretty quickly, depending on how often you ride and how quickly you finetune your skills. I learned to ride on a TTR125L in April of this year, and I outgrew it in less than 5 months. I'm 5'7" and 120 pounds, and the bike was just too small once I had learned the basics. And with your height and weight, you would be REALLY disappointed with the suspension if you're going to be jumping it. However, the TTR is definitely a fun bike and very forgiving when you're first learning. I got a lot of advice to get a taller and bigger bike when I was deciding on a "first bike"; however, buying the TTR was the best decision for me--it was easy to start, I could put my feet down, and I could focus on my riding skills instead of worrying about quirks of the bike. It was the perfect bike for me to learn on. Now I'm riding a CRF230F and love it--but I might be ready to move on to something bigger next year. I would say to keep trying out different bikes if you can, and get one that is FUN for you--each bike seems to have its own personality, which can seriously affect your fun factor. Heh, I race a little Ninja 250 with my local road racing club so, I'm used to whimpy bikes that are too small for me and technically, I still can't even push the Ninja 250 too it's limits (although I hope to someday) but, I can fold myself up fairly well:

Well, if you are insisting on a mini bike, don't go with a TTR-125/KLX/DRZ/CRF/XR 4-stroke beginner trail bike. Go with a powerful 2-stroke in the first place. Like an 85 or 100.

A YZ 85 has a 34.0 seat height making it the largest 85, and the RM85"L" has a 34.4 seat height. But if I were you, I would go for a Kawasaki KX 100. 34 1/2 inch seat height..

Technically, it's more of a budget thing and current shortage of interesting used bikes locally coupled with my strong "now" desire. I'd prefer a 4-stroke so, what do you think of the CRF230F? It's not too far out of my target price range.

A 230 will definatly help on the heighth but not the power. You'll probably enjoy the 230 more because you won't have cramps after your first ride. For just play riding it would be fine but it is a 4 stroke and totally different from any 2 stroke. Like I said earlier pick up a good XR250 and you'll probably have a better bike for less. Don't get me wrong, your not getting more from a 230 besides speed, weight, price, and size; well I'm just stuck to 2 strokes now.

If you want too goof around a 230's the right bike for the job(from Honda that is).

I borrowed an XR200 and a YZ426F this weekend - I didn't get to play too hard 'cause it was raining most of the time but, I had a blast. I even had my first face plant! ...ouch.

I probably liked the YZ better but, the XR still had plenty of power for my skill level (or lack there of). Although, the XR I borrowed had some issues that may have tarnished my impressions. Both seemed to fit my frame fine so, at this point, I'm liking the CRF idea 'cause it's cheap, has pretty good suspesion travel (9.5"/9.0"), electric start (ooooh) and a brief informal survey from whomever would talk to me suggested that it's a good all-rounder if I don't plan on getting a specific flat tracl/TT bike and a motorcrosser. FWIW

Thats cool. Its all up to you, but I would deffinetly consider a 2-stroke. They have so much power, and you can find one a lot cheaper too and they are more enjoyable to ride imo

The XR200 and YZ426 couldn't be more different bikes. IMO, if you couldn't easily decide which was more to your liking, then you should keep looking. Ride more bikes and read more posts on DRN. Based on what I'm reading, it looks likely that a purchase now would not be wise fo you. Just my $.02

Yeah, I'm feeling much less rushed - I didn't realize how easy it would be to borrow dirt bikes! Basically, I just wanna toy to build some skills in support of my road racing habit and I wanna keep it as cheap, fun and as completely un-serious as possible - I've already got the road racing to shovel every spare penny at.

2-smokes, while extremely high on the grin-factor, are not my brand of beans (sorry) besides, my wife utterly hates 'em and will never ever come if I get one. ...or let me start it anywhere near the house, etc, etc.

Being that tall your knees are going to be in your chest. You need a taller bike. I have a ttr its a very cold starter, once its warmed up it runs just find.

A friend of mine has a TTR125L and a DRZ125. We have a blast rubbing elbows on them. The TTR has better power, but the DRZ has better suspension. I wish the DRZ suspension was on the TTR. Either way they are both really fun play bikes.

I have been sitting on various beginner bikes in the last week, and at 6' 1", I think you would be waaaay too tall for a TT-R125L(LE), DR-Z125L or KLX125L. Sit toward the front of the seat with your feet on the pegs. Next, turn the bars all the way to the left or right real quick. Repeat until you decide not to get a 125 de to your height. :-)

Find a CRF230F to sit on. If you are looking for something mild to just have fun on, I think you should definitely check it out. I sat on one today, and was very impressed. I am trying to get my girlfriend started into riding dirt bikes and the Honda CRF230F or a used XR200R seem to be the best fit for her needs (Pure beginner and 5' 8").
