KTM EXC vs. 250MXers

I'm looking for anyones help that has experience with the KTM 200-300EXC and the 250 motocrossers through the trails. I'm 5'9'' 160lbs and I've been riding for over 5 years. I've had a CR125 for the past couple years but it doesn't do too well through the tight stuff, obviously. I need something that has more bottom end, but I don't want to lose too much of the top end punch. I guess the question is, do the EXC's offer a strong top end or would I be better off setting up a 250 motocrosser up for the trails?

Both the ktm and gasgas 250 enduro weapons are great fun, and have a similar powerband to a 250 motocross, they are just easier to ride, and have great low power. I own a honda cr250 and my dad owns a gasgas 250e, for woods i would go with the gasgas, enduro gasgas, fields gasgas. Honda= Not too sure anymore!!

I've ridden both the 250 and 300 EXC and would rate them as great for enduro/woods riding. More torque/bottom but still lighter than a four-stroke. The 300 had more bottom than the 250 and both are more suited to the woods than an 250 MXer. I thought they were both less peaky than a CR250 but as the bike manufacturers improve the bottom end of the two-strokes, this is becoming less noticable. The last 250 MXer I rode was '01 model CR so things may have changed since then. Either would be better than a 125 for trails/woods IMO.

The cr is agreat bike in great condition, its just that the gasgas seems to go forever, and requires less maintanience, when every 2nd ride something small goes on the Honda. What sort of bike do you want?
I also like the Tm250e, i didnt like the ktm250 however, it was even faster than my cr250 and had way less bottem, it felt like a 125 in 1st gear>

The KTMs are super and already set up for woods (wide ratio gearbox, 18" rear wheel, spark arrestor, x-ring chain, softer springs, etc). And starting with the '03 models they even come standard with Pro-Taper style handlebars. You can put all of that on a Japanese MXer but you'd still not have the wide ratio tranny or powdercoated frame. It's really too bad that only KTM addresses this market but they do a great job of it.

Top end jobs are also MUCH less frequent. It's pretty common for guys to race them in hare scrambles and finally open them up after 2 seasons because they feel guilty, only to find everything still within spec. This is a result of higher quality components and typically an additional ring vs. the Japanese MXers. The linkageless rear suspension is also a benefit since it's a lot less maintenance, gives greater ground clearance, and makes it super simple to remove the shock.
