Timing transponder?

The local track i race at is considering going to a timing system and we would have to buy a "transponder". The track owners say its just like the one NASCAR and AMA uses. We've had our fair share of problems with results and they think this is a good fix. I'd have to shell out $145 for it.
What do you guys think? Have systems like this made racing better at your track?
