Southern Spodefest?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Lemming---------------------

Ok, who is pulling this together this year and where will it be? Wherever we end up, please make sure that there are trails to ride since I am now a retired MX rider

Posted by: truespode---------------------

I haven't planned anything yet. If I plan it it will be at TNT again b/c that is easier for me to plan.

If someone else wants to put together a ride at Durhamtown, Bremen, Monster Mountain, Mill Creek, Diamondback or Copperhead feel free.

Ivan

Posted by: James---------------------

The only concern I have is that it be late enough in the year so that I can ride. I will go wherever starting May 1, especially if I can catch a ride with somebody (what a mooch!!!).

I might be allowed to ride slow circles on flat ground in April.

Posted by: JuliusPleaser---------------------

Does Bremen have anything that looks like a trail?

Posted by: truespode---------------------

They used to but not anymore from what I heard.

Ivan

Posted by: Lemming---------------------

What about Paradise Park? A few years ago, I contacted them (Capital City Cycles????) and they were receptive as long as the dates did not conflict with other activities.

I have to say that with my current work load, there is no way that I can organize it this year, but I certainly want to see one happen.

Ivan - last year the trails at TNT were unrideable, how are they this year?

Posted by: truespode---------------------

The trails at TNT are ok for the most part this year. They have done a lot of work but as soon as they get one section fixed another needs work. It is not the best I've seen but it is better than last year.

Ivan

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

How bout Aonia? Track, SX each evening, 13 mi trails, Pee wee, nice facilities. Whadaya think?

Posted by: truespode---------------------

Aren't the trails usually closed except on days for HS?

If you are willing to set it up and there are trails I think everyone would be willing to show up and offer you a beer or twelve

If you are not familiar with our SF, we usually make a weekend out of it. It is a non-event (no shirts, trophies or anything). It is basically a group ride that spans 2 days where we get to tell lies about how fast we are and how good Lemming is in the privacy of a trailer

Ivan

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

Ivan- I left a message on their machine for Larry about the trails and described what we are looking to do. Although I did not mention the Lemming thing... Not sure I wanna know. :D

Be glad to set it up if the interest is there. Beer not even required. Although that would not be a bad thing...

The facility really is nice. We may even be able to get Wes from Goatcreations there to do some filming of the spodishness.

Here is a copy/paste from web site:

Posted by: truespode---------------------

I've ridden Aonia's track before it was re-done and I've raced a HS there.

It is a GREAT facility to hold a SF if we can have use of the trails too.

I thank you for taking the initiative and seeing if this can happen there.

Thanks
Ivan

Just noticed you were in Spartanburg. I was born there and lived there 'til I was 15. :thumb:

There will be a charity ride benefitting Dream House for Medically Fragile Children at Aonia Pass on April 25th. The trails and track will be available.

Y'all can check the place out and see if it would do for a Spodefest, and take part in the first offroad event for the charity.

Now for 2 questions; what is a "spode"? and How do you get to be a southern one?

Robert

Posted by: truespode---------------------

Check out www.truespode.net for some definitions of a spode

You get to be a Southin one by either A) Being in the south or B) yell "hey ya'll watch this" and immediately have it followed by a horrifically emberassing crash

Dang, Ive been a southern spode for years and didnt know it....in fact, now I understand that some of those things said behind my back were compliments in the form of an acronym!!

"That Robert, he's 'A Southern Spode' "

Now Im off to see these definitions!

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

Put the charity ride on my calendar. Left another msg for Larry. Will advise...

Posted by: sammygor---------------------

My boys still talk about last years SF. The sand at Manchester and the track at TNT. It was a fun roadtrip. We just need to get mother nature to be nice to us where ever it's at. Also my old XR was never the same after it spent the night at TNT. Just be carefull who you get to watch your bike for you. I had to put her out to pasture and get a new WR.

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

Just left a THIRD msg for Larry at Aonia. Dude must not like to return phone msgs... I know he is there, he updates the answering machine msg every day. GRRRRRRR

Posted by: Lemming---------------------

What about Durhamtown? I hear the place is great with both motocross and woods riding available.

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

we ride dp alot. not very challenging, but nicely groomed track and well maintained trails. although mebbe non-challenging is a good thing. :D

pm'd Larry. And just called again and it was busy. Will try again. But glad to talk to Mike at dp and set it up if consensus is to go that way.

Posted by: truespode---------------------

If Aonia doesn't work out I think trying DP is a good option.

Thanks for the leg work Joe. Tim and I have both set these things up and even though it is a small get together it can be time consuming.

Thanks again,

Ivan

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

Be glad to do it. I leaned toward Aonia since it is a little closer for the SC crowd. Sure would like to get Mike N and his boys out so I can meet them... I know it must be really hard for them right now, and some riding might be nice for them... Isn't Whyzee from Columbia too?

Is Turkey Creek worthwhile? I read they have mx and trails. The website is not very informative though... Do they allow camping? DP does, have small cabins too. Cheaper to camp.

DP gets pretty crowded some weekends. Aonia does too but they have a lot more parking, and no need to cross a public road to get to track, which is an issue for my little guy who can barely hold up his KTM 65 but rides it just fine.

Has the event been pretty family oriented in years past? Sure would like to encourage that... Is it usually a small group? Is there any interest in expanding it to include more folks, or is it better to keep it DRN folks? Let me know, I have some non-DRN riding buds who would like to participate, but I don't want to breach protocol, etc... Just let me know, my feelings won't be hurt.

Posted by: truespode---------------------

Whyzee is from Raleigh but we make him drive all over hell and back

Turkey Creek is ok but I have not seen their trails. Last I heard they have been closed for quite a few years. It may be an option if they actually have trails but I doubt they do.

The event is VERY family oriented. It is all about getting friends and family together to ride. We also love to have whoever wants to ride there whether they are from DRN, GOR, Thumpertalk, RMD or wherever.

The protocol is to have fun with fellow riding buds. That is it. If you have your sister's, mother's cousin twelve times removed and he/she wants to ride they are welcome We even let Lemmings, Pleazers and things we call James

Ivan

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

Sounds good. Will try Aonia a little longer, then fall back to dp if necessary...

ps- got on the tnt site, looks like a nice facility- I can see why that was chosen before. and it looks like camping is free there, which is not the case with dp, although dp does have nice amenities... I think Aonia has free camping, will find out if I ever talk to Larry.. Will keep trying.

Posted by: ConqSoft---------------------

I hope we are able to make it. Sounds like fun.

Posted by: Lemming---------------------

Definately family oriented, that's why they make JP and I camp at least 1/4 mile away

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

Lemming, I am just not gonna ask...

FWIW, Aonia's Monday msg on the machine is still running, so I will try again tomorrow... Sighhhh...

Posted by: Lemming---------------------

Joe, ask away.

Ok, I'll tell you, it's because of the groupies that tend to follow us around

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

Hmmm, groupies... Kinda like the big shot rock stars and pro wrestlers get?

ps- spoke to a human being at Aonia yesterday, the gate girl (as opposed to great groupie) and she said she would have Larry call me. No word yet...... Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Posted by: wrench---------------------

Aw shucks .... let's just have it at the MONSTER again ... only in warmer weather than the last time!
Joe, if you see Lemming with some Heat~N~Eat Burrito's, don't ask any questions ... just don't be around him 30 minutes later!

wrench

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

Gotcha.

Aonia dude still hasn't called. DP works for me, its only 45 min from my house and has tons of trails, 2 mx tracks, a pee wee track and drag strip too. But it is kinda pricey... See website.

Re: Monster, I assume this is what you are talking about? http://www.monstermountain.com/home.htm
Looks awesome, but no trails for the tree bangers? Does the Carolina crowd mind driving all the way to Bama? Or would Bremen (right off I20) be a better choice???

Or is there anyone here with a private track and trails willing to donate said facilities for the cause for a weekend? Use that $ for beer I mean soda instead of riding and camping fees.

Posted by: truespode---------------------

Joe,

We have driven to Bama twice so the distance usually is not a problem. Since you are planning it here is some freindly advice... just decide what is easier for you to plan, try to get fair prices if you can from wherever and pick a date. The rest we will work out on our own.

This is why I would pick TNT if I was planning. It is easier for me to plan with TNT b/c I know the owner. Since you are planning just pick a place, tell us the details and we'll do everything we can to get there.

I think DP will be fine. It is usually only a Saturday / Sunday deal so $40 for the two days sounds good to me (not sure about the others but I'm sure they'll pipe up). Personally, I would like to get me a cabin as well.

Ivan

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

Okay, DP it is unless someone objects and has a persuasive argument against it. I will call Mike McCommons out there middle of this week and start the wheels in motion.

Plus I just noticed DP has $15/day deal for 3 or more days. I guarantee dp has more than enough trails and tracks to keep anyone in dirtbiking ecstacy for 3 days! And I have a 65 acre leased hunting and trailriding tract in Greshamville only 30 minutes away if anyone wants to save $, do some primitive camping, and ride some SERIOUSLY tight 1st gear technical trails in the evening after dp. Plus I have a kid friendly easy 1/3 mile circle loop too.

By the time of the event I should have more trails cut in, plus maybe a couple jumps if I can find a skid steer or a front end loader (too tight access for a dump truck...) Be aware that this option exists only for those who have 4wd (2wd if it is dry and you have good tires and weight over the driving tires) and don't mind a few scratches. The entrance is narrow and stealth, and I want to keep it that way... My son and I go out there almost every weekend, cut trails, have a campfire, ride, and traipse through the woods. Very peaceful back there.

So let me know the level of interest in this proposal. Also Town Creek will be open in early April, it is half way between Greshamville and Dp, and has a nice 7 mile bike only one way loop (plus a shorter ATV friendly loop). Kinda rutty, but they are fixing that supposedly, and it is only a $5 cost. Just in case someone wants to stay an extra day and do something different...

I am thinking early May, before it gets too hot to camp and before the mosquitos get too out of hand, but after the pollen lets up some. Just let me know...

Posted by: Lemming---------------------

DP sounds great. May is a busy month for the SERA circuit, the only weekends without a race that month are the 9th and 23rd. My vote is for the 9th!!!!

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

May 9th is good for me- feedback, group? Thanks.

I have actually calendared 7th to 9th. I suspect some folks will be "sick" that Friday. I have pm'd some GOR folks too, since apparently that is ok.

So Steve- the ride from NC isn't too daunting?

Posted by: whyzee---------------------

I've been wanting to do Durhamtown for a while, as well as Monster Mountain. You make it happen I'll be there 7th to the 9th.
Not much I can do on my end other than practice drinking at night, make up stupid jokes, and sit on my bike and make 2 stroke sounds, but if I can help let me know.

Hey Joe

You live close to Aonia?

And thanks for the referal

Posted by: truespode---------------------

May 7th to the 9th is good for me too.

Ivan

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

65 minutes from Aonia.

And only 45 from DP.

And 30 from Town Creek and Monroe offroad ranch. Yes, I am blessed.

Ivan- glad the date works.

Steve- as long as they are 2 stroke and not 4 stroke sounds. Appreciate the offer of help. I think we are good for now- I have pm'd Tweeked/Vic, who is a big time GOR dude, who now works at DP, and I think he may help us some.

Do we need a theme of some sort for this gig? Any thoughts? Thanks!

Posted by: truespode---------------------

We've always used "Suthin Spodefest" in the past

Ivan

Posted by: ob1quixote---------------------

As much as I would like to attend, I doubt I will make it. I am self-employed, and business is terrible. I am committed to taking the kid to the Sandlapper Junior Enduro this weekend, and the Dream House Charity Ride, if funds allow.

Who knows, maybe business will jump dramatically..........if not, Jump that triple once for me, have that extra adult beverage {if your not driving} and tell a few extra lies around the fire!!! I dont know what I like better, the riding, or the relaxing 'round the fire.....

Robert

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

Suthin Spodefest. I like that.

ob1- hope things pick up. Should be fun- I have gotten some replies from some of my GOR friends.

If y'all want to meet some GOR'ers, it looks like they/we will be getting together at Bremen March 13. The more the merrier!

Posted by: cbob---------------------

Joe - Thanks for pingin me on the GOR net. Now I have Mar 13 Bremen and May 7-9 (TBD) on my calendar. No guarantee I'll go, but thanks for thinkin of me!

My bike is molting.

- c bob

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

Molting!?!?!?!

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

Oh my- I just read this: http://www.motosports-boise.com/rmd/idahospode.htm

Time to start planning the wheelie, stoppie, log (or 55 gal drum) jumping, creek crossing, distance roosting, standing on the seat, night riding, hill climbing, and mud bogging contests (not all at the same time though, unless y'all are into that kinda thang... ). I am open to all semi-reasonable suggestions.

And I need some feedback on whether folks will "camp" at Dp each nite, or whether one or more nights will be primitive camping on my lease property (which by the way will accomodate all the aforementioned contests, except maybe the mud boggin (drains pretty well...). If primitive camping, will get a porta potty and a generator and icebox out there. Thanks.

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

In case anyone wonders- no ORV sticker or spark and sound requirements nor Safety training required (although the latter is adviseable..)

And for the kids Roswell Dirt Rider (Dave Harris- number one Motocross Academy) would probably be willing to do a class or 2 over the weekend at Dp. He does them all the time and is a very good teacher. He even lets Dad go ride while he trains the youngins...

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

Just got a call from Vic (tweeked) at DP- he says they are wide open for May 7-9, although it does tend to get crowded there on weekends. So if ya gonna stay there, make reservations now. He was enthused about the concept, and also suggested flat tire barrel racing and blindfolded idling toward a bamboo pole with a raw egg tied to it. I'm down with all that!! And he felt Dave Harris would be available to teach the little 'uns while we hightail it down the blue and red trails. He suggested posting something about the spodefest on GOR and maybe Thumpertalk too, about 3 weeks or so in advance. If that is ok wit y'all.

Posted by: Lemming---------------------

Sounds great. I'm off the to store tonight to begin stockpiling my "heat and eat" burritoes :flame:

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

SOunds just delightful... (pun intended)

Posted by: SpokerAce---------------------

Just learned about this right before the SX this past Saturday.

I'll be there.

That now guarantees that I'll have doubled the amount of riding I did last year! (Only went out once last year)

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

SpokerAce- we look forward to havin' ya! You live not too far from me- where do you usually ride (when you ride)?

Posted by: SpokerAce---------------------

Most of my riding the last two years has been at TNT it seems. Although there was that ride in Oklahoma and Monster Mountain the year before last.

I haven't been to DP in about a year and a half and have been wanting to get back out there since they've added the track.

Occasional rides at Locust Stake as well with the GOR folks as well.

Unfortunately I was out of work all last year so that put an end to my riding for that time frame. I'm working again so it's time to start back up.

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

Glad you have rejoined the ranks of the employed. You will LOVE the improvements at dp. The track is spode friendly, and you can ride it all day long without getting arm pump. They have a photographer out there most weekends so you can purchase some col shots of yourself doing sick whips and pointovers over the doubles. I also hear the trails are awesome, but with my 6 year old riding buddy who is not yet trail rated I couldn't say. The sacrifices we make for family.

BTW, on Saturday I cut more new trail on the private Greshamville tract. I now have about 2/3 mile of tight stuff, 1/3 mile of easy. Can be run both ways. More to come. Some of the tight stuff is SICK! Maybe we will post my son at the wheelie mandatory ditch crossing with the camcorder for a little while.

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

GOt my tail out of bed 5:30 Sat am and cut another 450 yards of tight 1st gear stuff. SOme tight pine, a lil rocks, some good elevation changes, a scenic little creek along a short strectch, and a loopout inducing jump over an old tree stump mound. Got a lil enthusiastc over that and did the Ivan thing. DOH! Rear fender may need replacing soon. I am happy however that I now have over a mile of trails, mostly tight stuff.

Walked the property some more yesterday and found a BIG ditch. average 12-15' across, vertical sides, average 10-12' deep, couple hundred feet long. Should make a good trials section. Plus there is one spot where there is a high speed downhill leading to the ditch that is a couple feet higher at takeoff than landing side, almost 20' gap. Maybe someone will be brave enough to attempt it. NOt me! Those big 12' deep 20' wide ditch gaps get me skeered! I am too old for that tomfoolery...

Also found a good mud pit at the far end of the property. Would make for some good mud boggin.

Bottom line is if I can get another mile and a half of trail cut in by May 7, it will be very viable for some good free riding. Plus free primitive camping if I can get a bush-hog out there and clean it up some.

We are having a GOR group ride and track day at DP this Saturday for anyone who wants a Dp preview. Should be good turnout and great riding!

Please let me know if y'all have started making plans. I would like to try and estimate turnout so I can see if this will all be workable. Thanks!

Posted by: ob1quixote---------------------

I need to make some reservations at Reitmantown Plantation!
Sounds like you have a GREAT place!

Robert

Posted by: wrench---------------------

Do we have an estimated cost for this event yet?

wrench

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

dp is 45 for 3 day ride, 40 for 2 day, and its 25 a day weekend, 20 during week. 8 and under free with paying adult. I like that alot!

http://www.durhamtown.com/dirtbike.htm

I put in a call to my man at Dp, Vic, and he is out today but will be in first thing in the am. I will ask if there are any group pricing considerations. WIll also talk to him Sat at the GOR ride.

For the budget conscious I will indeed offer RP (Reitmantown Plantation- I like that) as a free albeit primitive alternative. Again, it is kinda tight access. I can now get in without 4wd when not pulling trailer, but if you have a big dually and fancy trailer don't try it, unless it is 4wd and you don't mind a couple scratches! I can trim some branches along the entrance and dump some gravel in the ditch if needed.

Posted by: wrench---------------------

WOW! It looks like this will be the most expensive SpodeFest yet.

wrench

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

The cost was one of my initial reservations about DP, but there is a higher level of service/amenities there. There is nothing comparable to DP in the United States, to my knowledge. Plus some folks here seemed interested in doing it there, once it was clear Aonia was not interested.

Camping is the cheapest lodging bet there, $20-25/night if one or 2 people, under 10 free. Greensboro is 20 minutes away and has a hotel or 2 I believe.

Cost was a major reason I am offering free primitive camping (and riding) at my 65 acre leased tract, which is less than 30 minutes away.

Just spoke to Vic- kids 9-15 would be $25 for 2 days, $35 for 3 days. 8 and under free.

They have just made huge improvements to the youth/ pee wee track, .7 miles now, lots of jumps, 6 lanes.

They have 100 miles of well groomed trails.

They have a .6 mile sx style track and a 1.3 mile main mx track

They have just done an oval true pee wee track which will have some real small jumps.

Hopefully we will all get our money's worth and then some!

Posted by: truespode---------------------

Joe,

Can you try Aonia one more time? Let them know on the recorder that we usually have 20 to 30 riders plus family members for the entire weekend and we are not expecting to rent the facility just for us. We just want to be able to camp and ride the track and trail.

Thanks

Ivan

Posted by: SpokerAce---------------------

Wrench and I have been chatting about DP and that cost is just a bit much for a SpodeFest.

Especially considering the last few years when it was at either TNT or Monster Mountain, it was 10 bucks a day to ride with no fee for camping.

MM recently added showers and such. They were there when we did a SF a couple years ago

TNT only charged $10/day to ride with free camping, no showers. You do need a membership for TNT but it's not that much.

Of course Aonia is the other good option now that he has his trails open. Plus he has showers etc.

$45+ camping fees makes for an expensive weekend (that's on top of broken bike parts )

Posted by: James---------------------

I can't quite figure out how the camping fees work but it looks like $5 per person with a minimum of $15 (or three people). So correct me if I am wrong but it would be $40 for 2 days of riding plus $5 for one night of camping....or $45 total. Compare to 2 days of riding at TNT at $10 each or $20 + membership if necessary = $20-$30 Total.

If I am understanding this correctly, I am not going to be too upset by $25 extra to ride a new place.

Posted by: SpokerAce---------------------

You must be reading it differently then I am James.

I saw this:

PRIMITIVE CAMPING

13 CAMPSITES NESTLED AROUND A 4-ACRE LAKE. BATHHOUSE AVAILABLE AT THE MAIN CAMPGROUND AREA NEAR THE LODGE.

Minimum $15 per site per night.

Then there was the $5 per person fee.

So, each tent would be a site or can you get more then one tent on a site?

The $45 for 3 days of riding is a good deal considering their normal fee.

Maybe if we get the camping question cleared up I'll feel better about it...

Posted by: James---------------------

I read it to mean $15 minimum per site for up to 3 people. The 4th person would make it $20, 5th $25, and so on.

I would expect you could fit several tents in an area 1/13th the circumference of a 4 acre lake, but this is just guessing.

Posted by: wrench---------------------

Here is what is on their web site now:

NEW POLICY: $5 Facility Fee for non-riders visiting Durhamtown.

(DP Members and Day Riders only pay regular day-ride fees)

Everyone must sign in at the lodge upon arrival.

RATES, RULES AND REGULATIONS

FOR DURHAMTOWN PLANTATION CAMPGROUND

RATES

Subject to change without notice.

Tent Sites (with access to bath and showers) - From $20/Tent/Night

RV Sites (with full hook-up) - From $25/Hook-up/Night

Cabins (with bathrooms or access to bathrooms) - From $35/night

It looks to me like 20 bucks per day, per tent.

Ivan- I left another detailed msg for Aonia, with the description you suggested, and IMPLORED them to at least call and say yes or no. Plus I emailed them too.

Just left a msg for Vic at DP about camping fee. 706-486-4603 is their # for any other questions, or post question here. I will see Vic tomorrow morning and ask anything else we need to know.

Here's another idea. New donation only track in Bama just over the Georgia line:

"We have just opened a 1 mile+ dirt/mx bike only riding trail as an addition to your day of fun at ChrisCross MX. Fairly easy trail carved thru the woods, has only a couple of downed trees to cross. More difficult trails to be added soon.256-835-3208 or 256-239-4571

Open at 10 am till 6 pm 6 days a week and from 10 till 5 on saturday.

Take I-20 exit 179, turn south, go 1 mile. then right on Richeytown Rd, 2 miles then right on Family Lane at Mx sign. Follow MX signs to track.

It seems someone put a rather large double at the top of the hillclimb section of our track. It's not bad enough that there is an off camber turn at the bottom of the hillclimb? Then they put a double over a water hazard hazard! Ok, now that I have your attention:

Track is open all weekend (weather permitting), thoroughly prepped, ready to ride. Starting gate has been moved, track widened in 2 sections, 2 small doubles filled in to give the little guys some confidence (jump is the same just no gap). So if you are looking for a less crowded place to ride (for now) come on over.

Practice track located at I-20 exit 179 in Eastaboga Al has been extended to a full mile in length. It now includes a downhill ski jump, a hillclimb, and some long straights to blow the soot out of your silencer. New section will be open starting 1-25-04. "

These were a couple recent posts from GOR. He may let us camp free. You just pay for track and trail whatever you think they deserve. It's no DP, but sounds fun. Let me know if y'all want me to call the guy...

just left a msg for MM- to see if they charge for camping , and if they have any trails.

Just spoke to one of Dennis' kids about Chriss Cross mx in Alabama. They have 27 acres, and might have camping spaces, but I will get details from Dennis tomorrow morning. 27 acres is not much space, so I don't know if this will be viable.

Posted by: truespode---------------------

Joe,

Whatever is decided upon I want to thank you in advance for your hard work. I know exactly how much you are putting in and it is mucho appreciated.

Thanks
Ivan

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

Thanks Ivan.

And everyone needs to thank Ivan for asking me to call Aonia one more time. This morning I was outside rewiring the Cherokee trailer wiring and Matt hollered out the window "Someone from Aonia Pass is on the phone". SUCCESS! Unlimited participant capacity, water hookups, free camping/trailer/rv, only pay if do electric hookup, $10. The mx track is $15, see Gomer's ride report and helmet cam videos from a couple weeks ago, I think I stuck my ride report in there too. They will have 12-13 miles of trails for $10, I suggest we do trails one day and track the other 2 days. They have an awesome facility, bathrooms and showers too I believe. The track is just GREAT. The trails are easy, family/kid friendly per the guy who called me. They are wide enough for quads if anyone (Gasp) would choose 4 wheels over 2. Contact is 706 678 7518, Perry, easiest to reach night time 9-10.

Thanks again Ivan for encouraging me to try again. So Aonia it is, will have to break DP and Vic's lil hearts...

Posted by: truespode---------------------

That is great. I know Aonia will be a much better option for everyone.

I also like how Aonia has broken up its trail costs and MX costs. That is a smart move. I have seen how much it costs to maintain both and by breaking up the costs they can easily see where their market is and do everything they can to focus on that without giving up on the other.

Vic will be ok with the change. Tell him to come out too and I'll cover one day of his riding

Thanks Joe.

Ivan

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

Vic and the DP crew have PLENTY of business. Not hosting Spodefest shouldn't be a big deal. I didn't get to see ol Vic/Tweeked today. I mostly hung out at the pee wee track with Matt, and got in a few hot laps on the big mx track too, but apparently Tweeked was released from DP duty just long enough to do one trail and he was then back to work. So I will call him Monday and let him know he has a free one day pass to the Pass! That is, if DP will let him off the premises that long! Ivan, Mike seemed to really like Aonia, maybe you can talk him and the boys into attending...

Let me know what else I need to do to get this thing together, feel free to give me a call. Cell 706 206 0073.

Posted by: truespode---------------------

Gomer said today that he is glad it will be at Aonia and the tentative plan is to be there.

Ivan

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

Cool- did y'all end up doing Copperhead today? And if so, how was it?

Posted by: wrench---------------------

Cool, thanks for the hard work!

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

de nada man. Just some phone calls, its all good. By the way, I will call Perry soon and ask him about track prep. It was prepped really well when we were there in late November, so I would be shocked if it was not this time, but I will check. They tend to disk and water quite frequently, so it should be good.

Posted by: Lemming---------------------

Aonia sounds great. Plus I won't be tempted to break a leg on the MX track if'n I'm paying to ride trails

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

Lemming, I am COMMANDING you to come out on the track and play!!!!! Gomer says Aonia is a safe track, so it must be true.

Posted by: High Lord Gomer---------------------

There's nothing at Aonia than any self respecting Lemming can't waddle over. (Do all Lemmings waddle, or is it just Tim?)

Seriously, the landings are all forgiving enough and smooth enough that you will have a safe and fun time on the track.

Joe...I'm *so* happy that you got it arranged at Aonia. I've never been to DP, but Aonia is a top-notch operation. I don't normally do trails, but the trails there are the best I've ridden (this side of Colorado).

Robert...does this change your plans?

Posted by: ob1quixote---------------------

Well, it makes it more possible.
Business isnt picking up yet... I am considering leaving the ranks of the self-employed. As it sits now, I cant make it. I may not make the charity ride either. The two tanks of gas to get there and back equals 2 weeks of gas in normal use. I had to hitch a ride to get my daughter to the Cherokee Junior Enduro.

My recreational priorities are 1.Charity ride, 2.Spodes ride. Nothing personal, but my daughter and I have been planning to go and helping get the word out about the charity ride since November.
This time last year, doing both wouldnt have been a problem.

If I dont make this one, theres always next year. Wish it were different! I havent had a recreational ride since December!

Robert

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

Maybe we need to start a Robert fund. Ivan owes Vic/Tweeked a free day of riding but if Vic can't come since he is so busy at DP..... I might even chip in a little!

Posted by: ob1quixote---------------------

No, I would have to refuse that!! Funds should be reserved for more important things.
If y'all did that, I would FedEx a life size cardboard photo cut out of myself to Suthun Spodefest so I would be present, well maybe not, cardboard makes great tinder for that campfire.....

If I can be there I will. If not, no need for heroic measures.
But thanks for the thought!!

Robert

Posted by: truespode---------------------

Robert,

Since you wouldn't accept, I will be glad to cover your kid for the weekend of riding if you like... that way you get a rebate.

Consider it a Suthin SF sponsorship for her.

Ivan

Posted by: ob1quixote---------------------

All I can say is that I'll be there as long as I can do both events as I planned.
If I can only make one, it will be the Dream House ride, because I have been planning to attend since November. If I cant make either, you can be sure that you will see me at a future event.

You wont be missing too much! I look like Hank Hill without glasses, with a ponytail. I talk like Tom Bodette, but with a much larger vocabulary. And I ride like Kramer, but less coordinated.

Seriously guys, if I dont make this one I will probably make the next. Thanks for the thoughts. Like I said, have an extra beverage and tell a good lie around the campfire Saturday night!

Robert

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

Ride like Kramer- man I would like to see that!!!!

Maybe we need to go ahead and have some of the extracurricular riding events. Robert could really liven those up!!! He ought to do real well in the endo I mean stoppie contest!

HLG - lemmings only waddle in the woods at high speed. Of course since trees are not part of the Tundra environment, lemmings tend to hit them and fall down.

I think it is the "weebles" that wobble but they Don't fall down! :thumb:

I get confused easy. I guess I have hit my head too many times. Are the dates May 7-9 ? The reason I ask is cause Mothers Day is the the 9th. I will have to work extra hard for a kitchen pass that weekend. But for a Spodefest she will HAVE to understand. Also are most folks going to show up friday night or saturday morning ?

Posted by: High Lord Gomer---------------------

I will be there Friday night through Sunday evening.

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

Sweet! I may try to get there early Friday if schedule permits. Gotta love that weekday riding.

Posted by: HoleshotHank---------------------

I have been looking forward to this since I first saw it scheduled until I also noticed the Mother's Day thing. I will try to plan on Friday night through late Saturday afternoon. I love Aonia........

Posted by: Lemming---------------------

Friday night through mid-Sunday afternoon for me. That is unless you guys get so sick of me that you toss me out. The problem is that you have to catch me to do that

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

Mothers day!?!?!?! Uh Oh, faux paux (did I spell that right?) in my household. I guess we should celebrate it a week early? Why cut short a spodefest...

Lemming I'll bet Gomey can catcha. He has Aonia down pat, unless he has been photo (video?) shopping those helmet cam videos... Hmmm...

Posted by: High Lord Gomer---------------------

Up until Lemming fell down and got a boo-boo, I didn't have much for him. Now that his nurtz have shrunk-up, I might be able to embarass the old geezer.

Joe...any luck getting Dennis to come?

Posted by: Lemming---------------------

HLG - I won't even have an MX bike with me so there's no chance of you showing me up. Of course, you could always follow me into the woods

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

Remind me not to get anywhere near Lemming and Mike while they are on motorcycles...

Mike- just left Dennis a long voice mail inviting him- thought I overheard y'all discussing it Sunday. So now I have made the invite formal. Will advise!

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

I expect to have a surprise guest present on the 8th. Details to follow...

ps- I am calling my Aonia contact tonight to confirm some information, including location of camping in relation to shower and bathrooms, can we do a campfire, etc. Any questions y'all want asked, let me know.

Posted by: truespode---------------------

I'm looking forward to it.

Thanks for arranging all this Joe. It should be a great time.

I would start posting this on other boards if you have time. I can do it for you but it is always best to come from the organizer so you can answer the questions.

Ivan

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

I have started discussing it on GOR, but will put up a dedicated new thread today. I am not a member of thumpertalk. If you are, could you please handle?

Could those who plan to attend confirm with a post? I need to have an idea of how many, riders and guests, so I can tell Perry. Thanks!

I saw some recent pics of Aonia- track looks super prepped, clean grounds, well maintained. Should be A+ riding conditions- loamy, wide, groomed, watered.

Perry at Aonia has confirmed campfire is fine. The camping area appears to be not too far from the bathrooms/showers. Anything else I need to find out about?

Posted by: truespode---------------------

Sounds like you have it covered.

Here is a partial list of who I know is coming...

Me
Gomer (x2)
James
Vince

I'm sure there are more. Hopefully they will post that they will be there.

Ivan

Posted by: jboomer---------------------

I'm going to try and make it. I'll start warming the wife up to it tonight, it's all about the fundage. Looks like 400 miles one way, maybe 6 1/2 hour drive? We'll see.

Ivan,
Where can I find out about ammenities and such?

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

For those who have not gathered the bits and pieces along the way or don't want to go back through 4 long pages (I can't blame you...) here is something I posted today on GOR and here in the general rides section:

Every year the southern members of Dirtrider.net host a "Southern Spodefest". This is a fun filled weekend of family oriented track and trail riding and camping. It will be in Georgia this year I believe for the first time in a long while, if ever. There will be the option each day of Aonia's track for $15, trail for $10, or both.

They also have a flat track I think, plus the SX track might be available during the evening too, to make Crash happy. Camping is free, although if you want to make an electrical hookup to your RV, it will be $10.

The track is in excellent shape. It was great in November, and per recent pictures and reports, is even better now. Lots of loam tilled in, extensive grooming, regular watering. It is also a very safe track, with forgiving landings if you come up short.

Plus, for the charity ride this Sunday, the sponsor is doing lots of work on the trails, including extensive one way signage which they might possibly keep up for us. I think they have 13+ miles of nice, do-able family oriented trails that the kids and wives can enjoy on the little bikes and quads, 150's, etc.

I believe Mother's day is the 9th, but this would actually be a nice family oriented way to spend mother's day. I know some of you, for example Mxrider, have a better half who enjoys camping and dirt biking. Plus, you could always camp Friday night, enjoy a campfire and camaraderie with lots of GOR, DRN and Thumpertalk folks, ride all day Saturday, and be home Sunday if your better half insists.

There will be a surprise guest Saturday. A hint- he trained Jeff Stanton while Jeff was at his prime in the late 80's and early 90's, he has worked extensively with Gary and David Bailey in the mid to late 80's, and he is currently training a professional SX racer who frequently makes the main. I expect he will give a free mini-seminar on riding/racing safety and countermeasures, among other things, Saturday evening. More details once I firm that up.

If you are interested, please post. Thanks. Any questions, feel free to post, pm me, or call me 706 206 0073.

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

Best track contact is 706 678 7518, Perry, easiest to reach night time 9-10.

For those unfamiliar with Aonia, here is their website- http://www.aonia-pass-mx.com/aoniap...ocross/id6.html

And here is a link to some discussion and pictures of the track. It looks fantastic, even better than when I was there in November! http://www.peeweemania.com/forum/to...?TOPIC_ID=12639

Count me in

Posted by: DRZ_Dad---------------------

Hey guy's I have never been to Aonia, thought it was all track and no trails!!
I'm a woods guy, Someone may have already said and I missed, do they allow RV's there?

Nice to see ya Truespode......................

Posted by: jboomer---------------------

Found some more pictures that were taken recently: here

Posted by: ob1quixote---------------------

DRZ Dad, there have been 13 miles of trail cut for the Dream House Ride on April 25th {Sunday}. As far as I know they have no problem with RV's. I see them there every time I go, but that has been limited to the charity events held there. Its a long haul from Chas SC!

I am pretty sure there is a website for Aonia Pass, although I dont know the URL.

Robert

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

Website is above. They do have plenty of trails, and are RV friendly.

Robert, see ya Sunday at the charity ride!

Posted by: DRZ_Dad---------------------

Thanks, I dunno how I missed the link before! Robert, My son and I are gonna try and change some pre-arranged ( read wife's ) plans for Sunday, we will try and see ya there,

The southin spodefest, sounds like a real hoot.................

Posted by: High Lord Gomer---------------------

Can't wait!

For all of you that are coming, please make sure to also reply in the "Places To Ride" forum since not everyone (meaning me) checks in here regularly.

Posted by: joereitman---------------------

Here's a track report I posted last night on GOR regarding my ride yesterday:

"The track was great. I would not have believed a track in Georgia could be this loamy, well groomed and dust free! It was the best I have ever seen any track, anywhere.

They added some new jumps, such as the new double after the front straight tables and drop off. Smooth face, 60', 4th gear pinned. The other jumps were very good too, especially the single to table on the back straight. Some serious flight time potential there.

The turns quickly developed some nice rut berms so you could rail through. There were flaggers at almost every jump, all day long, so safety was emphasized. By the way, per Sam, the event promoter, they are in desperate need of more volunteers next year. Sam and his crew worked their tail off all day long, to ensure it was fun for all. They have been cutting trails for weeks.

I Rode the 13 mile loop and really enjoyed the peace and solitude and shade after the action of the mx track. I even got to ride another 1/2 loop at the end of the day as they were taking down arrows. The trails were in pretty thick woods, but not too tight. I ran most of it in 2nd, with a few opportunities in the open field sections to get to 5th gear WOT. It was apparent that a LOT of hard work went into event prep. I can't imagine having to cut in a brand new continuous loop just for a 1 day event! Although I may run it again in 2 weeks at spodefest...

I finally got to meet the owner, Perry, in person, after several phone calls. He was just as accomodating and enthusiastic about the event as Sam. Really a great crew."

Mike- thanks for reminding folks to also reply in hte other thread...
