Things I learned in Reno this year

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: zio---------------------

I'm not nearly as slow as I thought I was. I can mostly keep up with mid-fast guys like Eddie, Tony Da Rat, etc., as long as I'm not tired.

The Canadians are crazier than Mick, but he's still #1 in the boyish good looks category. And I thought I was gay-bait.

Lou looks much faster on trails than he does on a track. But then he looks "slow" again as soon as his helmet comes off. Poor fella.

Kav is not anorexic, he just has tapeworms. Somebody feed that skinny dude!

I am a hero. I saved the day when GSR's throttle cable broke 13 miles away from camp and I rode her bike back like Shane Watts, uphill all the way, through the jaws of alligators, over pungee sticks, blindfolded. She and Bratt are my witnesses. And I did not have the menage a trois they begged me for afterward. Aimee still tried to seduce me with "Hey zio, help me with my zipper". Deny that one, lady.

I can also make it up hills that other DRN'ers can't. Nevermind who.

Jake, a.k.a. Mellow Yellow (formerly ggoja), always manages to be hiding on some part of the trail taking pictures when you're looking your worst. He's evil.

Don't take the drink VD offers you right before bedtime. Much like eating his salsa, your butt will be hurting the next day.

Moonrocks in February is THE best place on earth.

Posted by: Rooster---------------------

I learned:

Be alert when following Zio on the trail, he likes to try and roost you with poop.

I need a 450

Some of the waitresses at Fireside should NOT wear their "uniform", better yet, they should just get jobs as truck mechanics

Iowa really sucks, big time, worse now, than ever before. This state should be turned into a tree hugger resort, with razor wire all the way around it. It's not good for anything dirt bike related.

Whoops make me hurt in places I didn't know I could hurt.

Sand isn't all that bad of a thing to ride on, it hurts less when you decide to lay down for a nap.

The patch is what made the ensemble for me

Why, yes, I do believe I am evil. Click HERE for proof.

Posted by: Strick---------------------

That is a picture of the best traction material on earth. Who's the SPODE?

Posted by: zio---------------------

Hey everybody, Strick's bald. And for Pete's sake.... I'm telling you- at times when you're not really supposed to be going fast, you round a blind corner and there he is, snapping photos, and you have to do something like stick your leg out & try & lean over to look fast. But roost doesn't lie.

The gloves are off, dude!

Posted by: gospeedracer---------------------

I learned that Zio is not as weird as he would have everyone believe, he's my Hero! He won't even bat an eye if you need help being stuffed into your riding pants!

If you're crazy enough, you really don't need a throttle to ride a dirtbike.

That Mellow Yellow is really cool and can take whatever the Canadians can dish out.

That our mentally unstable DRN Canucks are not representative of all Canadians. They are, shall we say, "special".

Strick and Mimi haven't changed one bit and are still awesome hosts!

and that I miss the desert!!!

FJ, we did some speculation and couldn't decide if that patch she was wearing was one of those patches they are always spamming us with to enlarge your, uhh, errrr, well, you know?

scary

Posted by: thumbs---------------------

I learned how to play hockey, in the dirt, with beverage impaired Canadians.

What, you mean this guy? What else you got?

Posted by: thumbs---------------------

Zia, oops I mean Zio, you might want to put the gloves back on.

I learned that even the smallest of females can hip check beverage impaired Canadians, while playing sand hockey, and manage to knock them over!

I REALLY REALLY need a WR250!!!!!!

Strick is the awesomest for letting me borrow the 200 for the day and it even had brakes!

Old cab drivers that don't know where they're going make for a very, shall we say, interesting ride...

AND The #1 thing I learned in Reno this year...among the DRN'ers that were there, it's a bad idea to walk around saying "My butt hurts..."

Posted by: VintageDirt---------------------

Here he is again

Posted by: gnarlykaw---------------------

i have learned that even old people can ride! I learned that jake is the most resourseful person i saw there! mean toast dude! I have learned that folk from canada are a blast! and a BW can jump!

Posted by: Strick---------------------

I guess I am not 'special' enough to view the photo gallery. Lifetime member since the first day it was announced and it shows, not registered??

Oh well, help put on a DRN gathering and not get to share in the photos --> figures.

I think it's still sorta broken after the upgrade. You have to clear cookies and log on or sumpthin like that. I'll look for the thread with the info. :thumb:

Posted by: Strick---------------------

Although, I was identified as 'logged in'. I have to log in again in order to get recognized. All is better now, except my Yamaha!

Posted by: VintageDirt---------------------

Must be contagious.

Posted by: Kav---------------------

Mapquest directions suck big time

I need a Canadian blender.

Little Ricky can loop-out when pinned in third gear

Mick has no sense of fear

I have the power of the “Evil Third” at my disposal

I need to ride more. I’m out of shape

I can’t tell MrLucky and Rooster apart

Be wary of the Game Patrol

Posted by: MrLuckey---------------------

I also need a Canadian blender

Kav can't tell me and Rooster apart

USA vs Canada full contact sand hockey in moto gear is tough

Our Canuck friends are awesome

Lou is starting to like hill climbs

Bsmith can RIDE

Strick and Mimi are awesome hosts and friends!

Bikes break easily @ Moonrocks

Posted by: bsmith---------------------

I learnt that everyone is as cool in person as on-line :thumb:

I wish next time I could go on more rides with some others, I missed riding with a lot of people!!

I should have spent more time socializing, but after trying to Follow Pinball in the canyon from hell, and trying to keep up with Endo, Mick(AKA energizer bunny), and Kiwi on the Donner party adventure I'm a lot older than I could imagine. I was sore in places I didn't know I had

I also learned that the high mountains in Nevada are a lot of freaking fun!!

That`s okay. We have some pictures of jake too, probably best not shared, but for blackmailing him at a later date!!

Posted by: GETMETOCA---------------------

I learned a lot this year:

I still need navigational help, be it on the road, on the trail, or in the hotel.

The Canucks are still cool. I'm going to celebrate their existence with a Maple Leaf sticker on my bike :thumb:

You can only plow your throttle into the dirt so many times before the electric start stops working. :whiner:

I missed everyone from Dirtweek more than I thought, it was so good to see all those familiar faces again and meet some new ones as well.

I have some pretty AWESOME friends! Although I've always known that, it never ceases to amaze me to experience all the generosity and helpfulness. Thanks.

Posted by: pinball---------------------

a few things I learned;

Americans can`t play dirt hockey very well ,but can still hurt you.

Zio will buy anything.(sucker)

Mellow Yellow will do any thing you tell him.

Blender drinks don`t really impair us ,it`s the 15 beer before lunch.

Kav is a better hockey player than he is a rider.

Bsmith is fast . going down hills.

Thumbs is a quick learner, but is too small for full contact dirt hockey.

Kiwi is still weird ,but very cool.

Pete and kav should be sent to jail for contributing gas for us to play with.

Posted by: rv6junkie---------------------

I learned that I shouldn't miss this ride next year!

Posted by: blackhawk468---------------------

When Kav comes to the Roulette table, cash out your chips no matter how well your doing and walk away.

Camelbacks are very useful in the desert even for a motocrosser.

Doing whoops all day can make you hurt in strange places.

Only girls can score desert hockey goals against the candians.

When the candians hit you during desert hockey wack them in the shin with your hockey stick and don't trust them when they act like you really hurt them.

Pictures don't do Moon Rocks justice.

Never follow Aimee on a "trail ride" back to camp with a 125.

Never go on a steep hillclimb on a 125.

Rocks are evil.

Natalie bruises very easily.

Tony and Lou are awesome for driving all the bikes 36 hours for everyone.

Everyone needs a bike powered blender.

Screw valentines day forever, I'm ridin at reno.

Yup It just was not in the cards this year. My mom lives about 2 hrs from Reno so next year I have have to use that as an excuse to go.

What are you trying to say? I scored the other team USA goal

Final: 5-2 Canadians if anyone is wondering.

Thank god there wasn't any ice or skates around.... I might have gotten hurt

Something I didn't learn at Reno: What is the commonwealth and who the heck is the queen the Canucks and Mick keep toasting? I didn't see Zio wearing a tiara.

Brian

Who was keeping score? I scored a goal too!!!!!

I wonder if Jake will ever try to trip me again?

I'm pretty sure the Canadian's learned they didn't bring enough gas, and I'm not talking about for the bikes and generator!

Maybe they should have fed zio.....

Brian

Posted by: KiwiBird---------------------

I need a blender.

I need to have someone watch when bratt is mixing my drinks.

Turn the light on when you are coming down drunk from the top bunk - Mick and Gina are going to wake up when you fall on them anyway.

If you are going to get a flat tire it will happen when you finally pass the truck you've been stuck behind for 10 miles.

6 days is just barely enough.

Posted by: bratt---------------------

Lets see...
I can out drink Kiwi

Zio is not into three ways with me and Aimee

I can kick start a crf450 on the 3rd kick when taunted by a Canadian.

Work WILL believe you when you call them at 7:30 am on the day you are suppose to work (Sunday) and tell them "my car broke down I won't be in"

Lesbians are kinda b***hy when you disturb their romantic date and throw food at them.

Posted by: endoquest---------------------

This year I learned, once again, that snow has a detrimental effect on ones ability to control ones motorcycle.

It was great to see everyone again and to meet some new faces too.

Cheers, Endoquest

I wonder if I'll ever be able to breathe normally again.

I learned that Kokanee is very tasty (the beer, not the dude)

Pyromania is not inherently a Canadian thing.

Anything Natalie makes is awesome (Meatballs, Cupcakes, Cake. . . where's the homemade linguica? )

It's weird knowing what everybody looks like now.

And sometimes frightening...

Posted by: zio---------------------

You make MelloYello feel good by letting him take a few photos, and he never shuts up.

Then he gets all skeered because he knows you're going to beat him up for threatening to show the photos of you sitting in another man's lap, drinking fruity mixers and whispering in each others' ears.

Posted by: Kav---------------------

Hey I resemble that remark!

Posted by: firecracker22---------------------

Things I learned:

Bikes only break down when you're on vacation

Toyota 4 cylinder pickups suck ass on road trips

Hotels with mirrors are way cool

Following Karl is an adventure (not a new lesson)

Eating within half a mile of Karl and the Canadians is an adventure

Gordy has sexy chest hair

I will not wear leather pants to a group dinner again

I will never let my boyfriend ride any other bike than the DT 400 again either, now he thinks he's all bad-ass and stuff.

Hey, I resemble that statement.

I learned that DRNers are always as amazing as I knew them to be. I have never met a finer group of folks in my life.

The other thing I learned ... If Lou rolls down a window in the truck, do the same very quickly.

Posted by: bbbom---------------------

I learned a lot too!

Don't ever follow 6 dudes on bikes down a steep snowy slope that has turned to ice from their slide down the trail. Be smart like Karl and ride in the fresh snow.

Keep your head up as you do a belly slide face first alongside your bike as it is sliding down the steep snow covered iced over slope.

If you slide in behind your bike on the steep snow covered iced over slope, you can "help" it get to the bottom where you stand a chance of not falling on your butt picking it back up.

If the guys ahead of you appear to have trouble climbing the rocky sandy hill, just attribute it to the fact that they don't have CR500's to ride.

If you provide enough entertainment in your crashing and trashing, the guys will actually like to wait for you at the tough sections.

Keep your speed up on the whoops (okay, I'm still working on applying THAT!).

Karl, Canadians, Tequila and mexican food restaurants can be an instable combination.

Some people have learned to just say "No" when Karl says he's leading a ride.

The road is much more dangerous on the way home when you realize that, you won't be home until midnight, you still have to unload the bikes & gear and you have to be at work at 8 am in the morning - good time to pull over and get a room! :thumb:

Whenever he gets cocky, just remind him that Mick had to ride his CR250 up that little hill for him.

Posted by: jennifer---------------------

OK, the things I learned:

Canadians are way sicker than French

I can beat Mick at drag racing

Natalie can break an arm and pretend it's just a bruise

If you can't find a trail to the top of a mountain just cut a new one

When cutting a new trail up a Mountain make sure you are not leading a group ride

Antelope herds are cool

I can beat Mick at drag racing

Strick is a very cool dude

Driving from Reno to San Jose can take up to 9 hours

I like hotel rooms with giant mirrors everywhere

Mick can jump

If Heather asks you to burry your rear wheel in the sand, stop before you can't see the swingarm

I can't jump

I can beat Mick at drag racing if he misses a gear in the middle

Pierre

Posted by: Strick---------------------

So, which is it? Are you Pierre or Jennifer? Make up your mind!

Posted by: fremontguy---------------------

How to fix (or not to fix) a flat tire in under 3 hours

Posted by: D36-108A---------------------

Pierre, you also learned not to glue your front wheel to the rear wheel of the ride leader who is looking for the singletrack off the main trail and may slam on the brakes and pull a U-turn at any moment. Tell me your life didn't flash before your eyes. Or at least a large KTM/Honda yard sale.

I guess I learned to use a "slowing down" hand signal even though I don't think anybody is within 50 yards of me.

I learned how to pretend "I meant to do that!" when I come up to the stopped group at high speed (trying to catch them after being separated), lock up both brakes in the sand, slide between side-by-side Randy and Susan, turning my bars so as not to hit their bars as I slide to a stop a bike length in front of them. Now I know how Pierre felt.

Oh, the tire changing!!

Poor Dave.

Posted by: galant2nr---------------------

I learned that as a local, it is a lot of fun to lead a ride of desert newbies just so you can see smiles on their faces.

I also learned that if you are a native, you get used to the endless miles of whoops... The newbies just keep asking when they are going to end...

I learned to never try and push your bike through a rock garden just to get to a new trail because you will drop it on a big friggin rock and taco the radiator so you can't race in the first race of the year that is happening the next day. :whiner:

No matter how many people I introduce myself to, I never meet everyone...

Brandon

Posted by: TwistNShout---------------------

Sounds like you all had a blast as always. What a great organized ride that Firecracker started!

Posted by: CJ Rider---------------------

Oh heck, I just learned that riding with ya'll only one time per year is SO not enough!

Posted by: bbbom---------------------

CJ, you just reminded me of one more thing I learned - I learned that my bike does look BIG when I see CJ riding it!!! :thumb:

Posted by: firecracker22---------------------

I think Strick and whoever else picked Reno the first year get more credit. I just picked the date and the company. I think Oregon or NorCal were two of the original options we looked at.

Posted by: VintageDirt---------------------

I learned that eating Mexican at the Peppermill food court (the line was short and how bad could it be) is not the best choice the night before driving a 1000 miles.

But at least Tonopah will remember me.

Posted by: dave186---------------------

I learned that you should probably fix whatever is causing those metal shavings in your oil, BEFORE going on vacation. and that galant2nr really needs his suspension done.

Posted by: galant2nr---------------------

Quote:

Once you guys get started doing suspension let me know where to send my stuff, I'd rather trust you on it than some company that just knows me as an invoice number.
You guys missed me turning one of my radiators into a Taco shortly after our ride on Saturday.

Posted by: CycleBuy---------------------

Galant,

Mylers's in Utah did a great job repairing my daughter's CRUSHED KX 100 radiator. Price was $35-40. Turnaraound was about 2 days.

Doh!

Well we didnt get to ride Saturday either because Dave's bike ate its roller rockers. But its already up and going again. So I hung out in town with the wife. When ever you are ready to do your suspension just let us know. I actually opened the doors here on monday. That ride you led us on was a blast. I love them whooped out washes!

Posted by: angry jim---------------------

Galant2nr,
Unfortunately, there were only 2 of us to witness the radiator carnage! Sorry you missed the race, but you will NEVER forget that ride. To boldly go where no man has gone before...
We forgot to tell you that anyone who rides with us on a Yamaha usually offers a parts sacrifice to the motorcycle gods. Nobody can fix that radiator . It was good meeting you man, I hope the bike is running soon. Nice line through the boulder field!

Other things I learned.
Dirt Bike Dave + Moonrocks = Damage
Either I need to spend more time socializing or everyone else needs to spend more time riding.
Strick is a good guy, and he rides better now than he used to. (sandbagger! and for the last time black plates are C class)
If my brother rode as good in the races as he does when he's following me, he'd have some of those 'C' plates too.
Reno Ray is a good guide.
Kelly's 520 likes the desert, except those icy downhills. Is it easier to stop if you go down sideways?
I saw some gnarly crashes by dudes on Kawi's. Micks buddy had the best one. I stopped counting front fender pieces at 27. Do you remember your name yet. And yes, that was a rock you hit.
I got to meet the Fantasy SX champ :thumb: .
Big Lou is not as big as before.
I found some new trails for Zio.
Kevin breaks things.
Sharla, 2 words for your boyfriend. Front Tire
Uncle Moose is cool.
$2:50 breakfast is not always a good deal.
Bbom has an interesting technique to get down icy slopes. The woman is tough!
Good food and beer with friends is a perfect way to end a day!
I'll try to meet more people next year! It's good to see the charter members every year.

Yeah once that was on he did even better! I think I'll put that old trials POS back on so he doesn't catch up to me so fast.

The crappy thing is, after all that work, he hardly rode the DT--On Sunday, he rode Kav's 250 for quite a while, then Gordy's 450, and Keith's GasGas, and even Karl's 500 a little bit.

Hey Jim PM me.

It was worth it to miss the race just to tell me friends about that ride we had. I knew I was in over my head 2 minutes into the ride but I had to play macho and try to keep up.
I don't think it is just Yamaha guys, didn't Dirt Bike Dave blow up his CR last year with you guys too?
I look forward to riding with you guys again next year, I better stop typing and start training if I am going to be ready...
