Just what Enduro's are the best?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: muddobber---------------------

I know this could stir a melting pot, and we all live in different
area's of the country. But if you were going to make a list of the best Enduro's in the U.S. what would it be? This could help a great deal in every one making a list of races to hit in 04. Here are mine and I admit my bias to the Midwest.
1. New Paris Indiana- These guys know how to run a race.
2. Greenville Ohio- Some races are classic and this is!
3. Muddobbers Indiana- This is where my bias shows but awsome race.
4. Marquette Michigan- Unbelieveable terrain
5. Chillicothe Ohio- The best in Southern Ohio
6. Lake City Tennessee- Again Unbelieveable terrain
7. Athen's Georgia- Just hope it's not to wet.
8. Mcarthur Ohio- The sections just keep on going
9. Harrison Michigan- Really fun, shorter section's but a lot of them.
10. Roselawn Indiana- The Spring race is the better of the 2, just because it is cooler than August.

There you go, now tell me your list .

white city il ccdr ask any of the 40 rider that show up

Posted by: Timr---------------------

Acadiana Louisiana - National
Maplesville Alabama - SERA / SETRA
Cherokee National Georgai (when it's not wet)

Posted by: Farmer John---------------------

I like the ones with strippers at the checkpoints. :thumb:

Posted by: ScottYZ250---------------------

If I had the skill to ride any caliber race I wanted, I'd like to ride the GNCC series and the National Enduro series. With that said, the events that make those two series up would be my choice...

To narrow it down, I'd love to someday ride the National Enduro at Coalinga, CA and the Ironman GNCC in Crawfordsville, IN :thumb:

Posted by: fender92883---------------------

Not sure how the actual riding/terrain match up with other enduros since I've never raced in one (although I HAVE ridden on some event trail from this enduro after the race was over), but the Jack Pine enduro in Moorestown, MI is one of the most historic enduros in the country, if not THE most. Guys like John Penton, Randy Hawkins, Jeff Fredette, Steve Hatch, and Mike Lafferty--just to name a few--have raced (and won) there. I've gone to the enduro for the last 2 years and worked different spots of the race. If you have the opportunity, I'd say to go and check it out. The 79th annual running of the Jack Pine will be held on August 22nd this year.

Posted by: Akira---------------------

I really enjoy the Roselawn Enduro. It was my first, and I had no complaints about it. I am looking forward to racing it both times this year. :thumb:

But I am more a Harescramble man my self, and the big anticipation of this year is the Ligonier race this April. The last time I was there it was my first race ever. I finished dead last, and since then I have wanted reveng on that track

Ever been to Roselawn?? Becareful for what you ask for

Posted by: Mowboy---------------------

It is a shame Muddobber is getting so old and slow. He used to want to go riding on Sunday instead of sitting around talking about the great enduros he used to ride when he was younger! I suppose after that many years of coffee at the co-op it may become more fun to shoot the bull than to ride that shiny new bike... Here's my short list.
Chillicothe, OH Enduro
Upland Enduro, IN
New Paris, IN Enduro
Boot Hill Enduro (Colorado)
White City, IL Enduro
Greenville, OH Enduro
Roselawn - Cause I get to sleep in my own bed
Most any Southern Ohio enduro would usually make my list but after rain at almost every event last year I really forget what a good Southern O enduro is really like! I can not wait to ride a good one this year.
ISDE's pretty fun too.

Posted by: craig_enid---------------------

1)Golden Eagle, Stillwater, Oklahoma. 'Cause that's the one I work.

6)'96 Golden Eagle, Stillwater, Oklahoma. My first enduro, on a '78 CR390 Husky. DNF.
7)'98 Crosstimbers, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. First enduro finish, on an '82 Suz DR250.
8) ? ??????, the first enduro I win a trophy at.....

Posted by: D Lafleur---------------------

Thanks TimR. I would of liked to race the Acadiana National but they wont let you when you are the trail boss. I do enjoy the Perry Mountain ride.

Darin

Posted by: Timr---------------------

No problem Darin. Your race has always been one of my favorites. In spite of the race in '95 with all of the rain and rivers.

Posted by: UMAGUMADOG---------------------

(1) 03 Alligator I overalled the c class
(2) 03 Cherrokee national and this place never gets too wet
(3) The Gobbler getter any year
(4) 71-73 Stone mountain enduro close to home and I could actualy go watch dad ride
(5) It's not an enduro but the 24 hrs of perry mtn is the absolute most fun I've had at a race period
(6) Any race where the creek crossings have people in boats watching you cross
(7) Coal creak partly because I work it every year but mostly because I got to help cut some of the trail and get a good laugh every time I see someone leaving the start control (hehe suckers)(j/k)

Posted by: muddobber---------------------

Some of you are getting the idea. Come on, if you have not ridden an Enduro you really can't talk about what one's are the best. Frankly some of the National's are not the best Enduro's, just really long torture tests. And why would anyone want to ride quad trails at a GNCC. Those are not the best trail in this great land. Mowboy, the co-op has a really good coffee maker and dare I remind you of our last head to head competition. I think I was at the trophy presentation while someone else was already home pumping water out of his bike.

Posted by: FlyinRyan---------------------

The last time I saw Mowboy he had just got done puking and was plopped down on a log at White City. Although I wasn't much better!

My list:

All 4 enduros in Iowa, espically Straford and Winterset, IA
Upland, IN Muddobbers club does an awesome job)
White City, IL A real enduro that I wish more people would ride
Park Hills, MO National, for some reason I like it
Goshen, IN Only ridden it once but it was very fun
Pearson, WI The best rock race in the Great Lake area
Kishwaukee Riders enduro, Rockford, IL No longer put on but it was a great enduro, plus I used to help
Marquette, MI It does have a great mix of terrian.
Roselawn, IN Spring and fall, can't beat Millers 20 mile section
Harrison, MI Love those tight woods
Rand, CO The views were great

There are probably others but those stick out. Most of the Nationals I've ridden are no better than a local race, just longer. I did enjoy the Louisana 2 Day QA in 98 though.

Posted by: $ly-v----------------------

muddobber i think you have it you successfully named everyone of my fav, enduro's

Posted by: $ly-v----------------------

i really think the mich, indiana, enduro's are awesome, a few ohio

Posted by: danielst---------------------

My short list from 2003 would be:

1. Harrison MI National - Most fun I had at a race all year. But living and racing mostly in Southern Ohio meant it was just about the only dry enduro I ran all year.

2. McArther OH - Little Burr - Had a ball at this one too. C'mon, an 8 hour enduro with really fun trail... what could be better?

3. Chillicothe, OH (2 Day) - Saturday was too easy, but the Sunday trail was great. And, it's only about 5 miles from my house which is always nice.

4. Upland, IN - Great race. Trails were nice and the weather was great.

I enjoyed all the others that I ran. Even the survival fest that was the ADR National Enduro in Wellston. I houred that one at the last check, only enduro I didn't finish all year. But, on the bright side, it made all the other mud races seem easier

Posted by: D36-108A---------------------

District 36's Sawmill enduro when it was on Lousiana-Pacific land near the wine country (Navarro) was probably the best I've done. The 49er in the October snow was a close second. The Quicksilver was the most tortuous.

All the D.36 old-timers always said the best enduro was the Big Boot in Eureka.

Posted by: Mowboy---------------------

Muddobber, I cannot argue. You were at the trophy presentation and I was home pumping a fine water/dirt/sand/mung mixture out of my brand new engine. I do want to remind you who won the team race though... not you!!!! Not me either but I did accomplish my goal. The real question is where were you yesterday? That coffee must be really good.

Flyin Ryan, You are right too. I did get a good chance to take in some beautiful scenery whilst sitting on that log. Something crazy always seems to happen every year at White City, usually bad for me and it still makes it on my list of favorites. Go figure.

LET THE ENDUROS BEGIN!!!

Posted by: muddobber---------------------

Just when I was starting to warm back up to you, mowboy, it all starts again. By the way did anyone notice hardley anybody lists Greenville Ohio as one of there favorites. So in all of this what did I learn. It all comes down to where you live as to what Enduro's you like. At least we still have a good variety of race's to choose from, in this part of the country anyway. So sit back and have a cup of coffee cause in a few weeks the season is going to hit full stride.

Live to Ride- Ride to Live! Mowboy, you need a lesson learned. Be on your guard!

Posted by: garygcjr---------------------

I miss the Far west MC's Big Boot Enduro. That was such a kick-ass enduro. Riding trails in the redwoods sure beats trails in shrub-oaks. Broke my ribs there in '97 and still had a good time.

Posted by: rda---------------------

greenville is one of my favorites. I was having fun last year untill that light mist started. Plus, I made a bad tire choice the day before.

my favorite enduro last year was the national in Marquette, MI.

Posted by: Mowboy---------------------

The guard is on...

Posted by: nzambon---------------------

Boy you can tell people are itching to ride. Well the loose moose is the best enduro again this year because we are putting up over 4000.00 in cash purse. Aside from that I never been to a bad enduro. My hats off to any that put one on! anyhow 1. marquette Mi 2. Grand rapids MN 3. pearson Wi. 4. goshan In. 5. Upland in. 6 Wolverine Mi. 7. Harrison mi. 8. Jackpine MI. 9.Mora Mn. 10. Anywhere in da UP. see you there

Posted by: FlyinRyan---------------------

I agree with Zambon, my hats off to any clubs that put on an enduro. Maybe that should be the next thread, How Many people help put on an Enduro?

Nick, you coming down to Byron this year? How about you Mowboy? Hopefully it will thaw out my the end of the month!

Posted by: larosche---------------------

I guess my old age is starting to show because I am going to list some Enduros that are no longer running............
1. Greenhorn Enduro - used to start in Pasadena, CA and run to Ridgecrest, CA on Saturday then turn around and run the other way the next day. I never rode this, but it sparked my interest as a young kid when we rode the course with the riders when I lived in Ridgecrest.
2. Perry Mtn at Maplesville, AL. If you look up the word "Enduro" in the dictionary, they show a picture of this place.
3. High Mtn Enduro - used to be put on by the Cal Poly Penguins. I was in the club for 5 years (OK, so it took me a while to get my degree). We had a great trail and it was a National for a year or two. When the Enduro was young (in the 40s and 50s) it started on the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo campus, went to the beach, then out to the mountains.
4. Acadiana - Love this place; I like any Enduro in LA.
Other Enduros I like: Rockford - tough but fun. The old "Crack-O-Dawn" Enduro in CA. Jackhammer Enduro in CA.

Enduro that I think are over-rated:
1. Alligator - no cut trails where you cannot see any dirt. Some good trails there, but way over-rated.
2. Cherokee - not run exceptionally well and not set up for rain (which happens often).

RAD DAD

Posted by: nzambon---------------------

fly'nryan hope to come down but the only way I'll be able to is if you pospon it to the following weekend. Because I have to work the weekend of the 28th. So Iam watching the weather.

Posted by: John Harris---------------------

I guess I am going way back, but does anyone remember the Little Harpeth 100 in Middle Tennessee in the 70's and early 80's?

Posted by: Tom Dixon---------------------

The Upland race was sweet (muddobbers?) Anyway, I liked it because of the river crossings and the huge river banks. I loved it.

Posted by: Timr---------------------

I agree that Alligator is way over rated. They wouldn't have 500 riders if it wasn't during bike week. In fact, I've heard from a few that they woudn't even have a SETRA sanction if it weren't such a tradition.

I've heard of the LIttle Harpeth, but never had a chance to race there. I was too young.

Posted by: fuzzy---------------------

Blackwater 100.

Posted by: rda---------------------

upland is usually good, old muddobber got a little crazy with the river crossings last year though. 1st time in 10 years of enduros that I ever drowned a bike. I saw a lot of others sitting along the bank with me too.

I did get the bike going again and even finished the race after houring out, that is how much fun the trail is.

Posted by: superfly---------------------

How about a list with some coast to coast flavor - not one specifically located in one region?

Top 10 (in no particular order):
-Deleware State Enduro
-Sawmill Enduro (The old L-P lease area, N Cal)
-Drummond Island, Michigan
-Block & Tackle Enduro, Colorado
-Mt Baker Enduro, Washington
-Cajun Classic, Louisiana
-Idaho 100 (Qualifier)
-Rhode Island Enduro
-Stumpjumper, Michigan
-Boondockers 2-day, Texas
and off the list - Boot Hill Enduro, Colorado - because my club promotes it.

Some of these events don't exist any more, but if you EVER get a chance to ride one, do it before it disappears, too.

Posted by: lucas273---------------------

The Perry Mountain 24 Hour Challenge in Maplesville, AL is THE most fun and challenging event.

Posted by: kelseybrent---------------------

Got to put a plug in for the 2-day Corduroy Enduro in Ontario, which celebrated it's 50th anniversary last year. Great trail and exceptional beer.

Posted by: ktmracer---------------------

Lucas: I think we are going to have some Night rides in preparation for the 24 hour. you ought to drive up and ride with us.

will

Posted by: D36-108A---------------------

Oh yeah, how could I forget the Night Owl Enduro (NCWR, D. 36, Foresthill). Key time of about 9:30. That's PM. Darkness and dust.

Posted by: Barbarian---------------------

Sandlapper in Pelion SC gets my vote. 20-30 miles of new trails every year! Plus the old trails never get whooped out, because they are rotated so much and there is no riding on them during the year.

Posted by: Lissa---------------------

Favorite Enduros:
Tough call, I love just about every enduro that isn't rocky... Here's my favorites.

1. Sandy Lane Enduro, MMC - Greenbank, NJ...71 years and still going!
2. Alligator Enduro, DDR - Daytona, FL...I love swamps and mud!
3. Curly Fern Enduro, SJER - Indian Mills, NJ...Last year was soo muddy, it was great!
4. Moonshine Enduro, VFTR - Brandonville, PA...Rained slicked rocks, technical 'n fun.
5. Blue Stone 300, RRMC - Southern NY...The grass tracks sucked, but the hills are
the best!
6. Sandlapper Enduro - Pelion, SC...The new growth forest trails are really cool!
7. Delaware Enduro, DER - Delaware City, DE...Usually very muddy, good stuff.
8. Green Marble Enduro, GMER - Mayo, MD...Tough as nails when wet, but still neat.
9. Rattlesnake Enduro, BER - Cross Forks, PA...Some of the nicest trails in PA.
10. ISDE, Brazil...I didn't have much luck at all, but the views I'll never forget!

Posted by: SCHLAVA---------------------

Thanks guys I can't believe DE National only got 2 mentions! I love about every enduro in the ecea. The only other place I've traveled to was Sandlapper. If that run was in the ecea it would be the best run of the year every year.

Mark

Posted by: Lissa---------------------

Well said Schlava! I love every ECEA sand run and just about every rock run...
