Numbering question...

Ok, I admit I am not too savvy with the way the AMA handles numbers. So if someone can help me out it would be great.
What will happen if Chad Reed finishes first and Kevin Windham places second at the end of this year? Will CR get to put a number 1 on his bike? (i'm thinking so..).
How abot KW. Will he get to put a number 2 on his? Or is that number still somehow connected to Jeremy McGrath?
Just curious..

reed will get to run #1 in sx only. windham will keep his same number unless he wins the outdoor series. single digit numbers are reserved for past or present champions.

Plus, those racers have to stay "current" to keep the number. I believe they have to at least earn one point per year.
Doug Henry keeps his "19" by showing up for one or so outdoors per year. I don't honestly see McGrath doing that to keep his "2".

I'm not sure how it happens, but some have won enough to lock in their number for only their use. TP - 199, MC - 2, RC - 4, Raynard - 17, Bubba - 259 are just a few. no other rider can run these numbers in AMA races.
