Keep Cameron Or Give him the Boot?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Philip---------------------

Josh says Cameron Steel is not the man to be with Todd Harris in the booth. What do you guys think? Do You miss David Bailey? Do you think Cameron is out of his element in SX?

Posted by: FMFHonda161---------------------

I think that he rides the suzuki fast lap before races in the outdoors, and if he can do that then he is ok in my book.

Posted by: Okiewan---------------------

SX has never and will never be the same without Art and David. End of story.

Camron isn't bad, but I'd rather listen to Davey Coombs.

Posted by: ScottYZ250---------------------

I much prefer Davey Coombs...

Posted by: oldguy---------------------

I also think coombs is far better but agree the new sound isn't even close to Art and Bailey

Posted by: rickyd---------------------

I saw Robby Floyd giving a report, they need too get rid of him IMO

Posted by: 2smoke---------------------

Art Eckman....he had an announcers voice.....and I miss his leathery head and the comments.....he kinda gave it all a little style.

Posted by: MXP1MP---------------------

give him da boot, it's obvious at times they have no idea what they are talking about. I vote for pastrana when they had him do some commentary on live webcast last week he didn't do that bad!

I didn't mind Robbie Floyd this past week. I didn't vote because the option I would like isn't available (Banished to X-Games purgatory forever). I would like to see Coombs in there full time but he has said repeatedly it will never happen with his workload at RacerX and his family life.

Posted by: fender92883---------------------

I'm just tired of the same phrases that Cameron uses! "Flashes of brilliance" is getting pretty old...

I'm sure he's a good guy but I think he needs a little training for SX before he announces any more.

Posted by: XRpredator---------------------

Who's doing Daytona? I'm betting RJ again, or maybe him and Bailey?

I say send Cameron and Todd to go do monster truck mud bogs or something. I'd rather have Molly Culver and Jerry Bernardo do SX than those tools.

Posted by: BEEF706---------------------

I miss Art and DB, we'll never get them back though. How about Coombs and Hannah doing the color! Now THAT's entertainment

Posted by: mxer842---------------------

same phrases!?!? hmmm...eckman's classic "bar-to-bar we go" slogan comes to mind...all the same he sucks atleast DC and Ackman knew who some of the privateers and "real racers" were and not just the guys with works bikes.

Feed Them To The Pigs!

Posted by: kmccune---------------------

Listening to Cameron is like listening to a very bad top 40 disc jockey!

Posted by: ktmdad---------------------

Bring down those two announcer's from the Canadian Nationals on Speedvision or bring back Bailey.

Heck, even Carmichael! At least he is noticing more of what's going on off screen.

Posted by: marcusgunby---------------------

if you have ever listened to our gp announcer you forgive anything!!!

Posted by: ktmdad---------------------

That guy will put you to sleep.

Posted by: cyprice---------------------

What I hate is when todd harris says "whats going through his head at this point in the race? Or whats KW feeling with Reed bearing down on him?" and cameron spews out some nonsense. Like he has any idea what it is like to race at that level. Traditionally color comentary is given by an expert. I know cameron rides, but to me its like replacing John Madden in the booth with a high school football coach. Give me an ex-champion like D.Bailey, RJ, Emig or at the very least someone who has raced at the pro-level for some time.

I think Cameron was more effective from the floor, personally. I don't think he's doing a horrible job at announcing, however, he's certainly not the greatest at it. Maybe he just needs time to adjust to his new surroundings.

No doubt, whenever I watch the gp's I always end up turning the sound down after about 10 minutes and listening to music while watching the race. Other wise I would end up falling asleep!

I voted to keep Cameron although I want db back. I think that he will continue to improve if given the chance. (The first Anaheim was horrible calling everyone by their nicknames)
Fact is there are very few people out their who are comfortable with a microphone AND know squat about the sport.

Posted by: SpectraSVT---------------------

I enjoyed Gary Semics a few weeks back. he doesn't have the best voice but he had some insightful comments that I haven't heard before.

Posted by: nephron---------------------

I agree strongly with cyprice in that there should be at least one retired pro. I remember listening intently to Bailey, thinking "yeah, that's cool--and most likely true."

We've all heard Hannah from the YROC--he was pretty damn good. Mostly because he'd raced against half the guys out there and was smarting off about them. I remember seeing him (in RacerX) interviewing Bradshaw @ the Coliseum around 91-92? He must have been doing it then. Maybe him and Bailey? MC? What's he doing?

How about the ultimate genius and the ultimate pro? Bob Costas and David Bailey? Think SX could afford Costas?

Posted by: jjohnson2499---------------------

Cameron I can handle, get rid of the play by guy! He sounds like a stereotypical baseball anouncer.

Posted by: mxer842---------------------

lets get some announcers whose knowledge of our sport pre-dates the x-games.

Posted by: Domtomac---------------------

The best announcers at SX were David Bailey and Davey Combs, they were the high point! They knew the sport and knew how to talk about it on the air. Cameron Steel should stick to hyping Freestyle. His overexcited/hyping announcing style sucks when it comes to announcing SX. SX is exciting enough. It doesn't need the phony hype that boring Freestyle does.
But then, Cameron's not as clue-less and Todd Harris! Where did they he come from. Talk about know-nothing DJ's! Although he may be an improvement over old Art Eckman. Talk about DJ's that use goofy terms - "look at him 'fishtail'" and "soil" (they're "dirt-bikes" Art, not "soil-bikes")
Oh well, it's great to have all the racing on TV that we do today, good DJ or bad. I really should stop complaining. I'm old enough to remember the 70's, when all we had were 10 minute clips on "Wide World of Sports." Now that's bad coverage!

And those 10 minute clips were preempted by table tennis, ladies vollyball, golf, billiards, badminton or anything else that the networks deemed more important.

Ok, the ladies vollyball. We'll have to give em that one.

Posted by: showtime586---------------------

Art and David were the best. Even with Art getting tongue tied they were the best combo.

Posted by: UMAGUMADOG---------------------

the gang from DMXS now there would be some good announcers

Posted by: KX02---------------------

I just remember being sick of Bailey continually saying that taller riders are better. I'm pretty sure Carmichael is under 6 foot.

Posted by: Mark Hammond---------------------

Bring David Bailey back he was the best, he's been a racer and knows what he's talking about . Cameron Steele and all those other as----es are crap .

Posted by: kelsorat---------------------

David Bailey or even a recently retired racer. This sounds nuts, but I noticed that Pastrana did a real good job co-announcing in the past. Why not him, he doesn't like racing anymore.

Posted by: ZOOK250---------------------

anyone remember larry huffman?

Ditto

Posted by: kuritaro9---------------------

i have to agree with marcusgunby on the gp announcer.he is a tool!!! as for cameron, let him do x games, and the other guy is a jackass as well. bring back bailey!!!!!

Posted by: john3_16---------------------

I have to agree and say Pastrana would be an excellent announcer...

In my opinion Davey Combs is not TV announcer material...I know alot of people like him here but I remember thinking when he started announcing "his dad must be the coach" or something like that...

You need someone with a commanding voice like Art Eckeman and wits like David Bailey...There's hasn't been a better combo out there. You need the voice and the expert...And David has a clear, voice to go along with his knowledge of the sport.Even though Bailey is always talking about how tall someone is like they are going to win because of that reason...I noticed that too.....

Strange though, the greatest riders in history are about average height (Jeremy McGrath 5'10), or below average height like Bubba and Ricky....Those two boys are maybe 5'7 on a good day...

Cameron Steele is full of excitement...I think he is more entertaining for kids and he does a good job on the floor.

Posted by: Crash 142---------------------

David Bailey knows what he is talking about. He has the experience and insight to make watching the race more enjoyable for people who know the sport and the racers, and also for people just tuning in for the first time. McGrath grew the sport, but Bailey had our ear and told us what we were seeing. Bailey has a good, calm, wise personality and a good wit.

All the other announcers are just guessing or making things up.

Bring back Bailey and let him pick his partner. He and Art did make a good combo.

Anyone got the e-mail for the person at ESPN we could send our requests too? Anyone know why Bailey isn't doing it anymore?

Posted by: berudd---------------------

I agree that these guys don't really do it how I would like to see it done. Bailey was great but I think ESPN was annoyed be him always (correctly) telling them how much their coverage sucked. DC is cool, but yeah, not a TV personality even though he knows the sport.

I guess we have to consider that this programming has to appeal to a wide range of people. If the coverage was at a riders level of knowledge and interest int the sport, it would not appeat to a large number of people.

Until the coverage is live and not edited for time, I think we will all be a little less that 100% happy with it.

I was watching GP a few night ago and fell asleep. I thought it was because it was early in the morning but after reading through the thread, I'll conclude it was the announcers. Yawwnnnn. The only thing that was keeping me awake was the roar of Townley's engine. That coverage would have been better with microphones placed around the track and just listening to the motors.

Myself, I like Cameron Steele but it wouldn't matter if it was Vin Scull announcing. I would watch regardless. When Iamb watching SX or MAX, I like to feel the energy of Steele or Bernardo. I've never heard Bailey or some of the other guys but from their description here, I imagine they were pretty good. Yeah, those canadian announcers are pretty good too. Even though most of us put MX or SAX as the #1 sport of all time, we have to recognize that it's just a drop in the pan to some of the other sports and we should be happy with what we get. MAX is blowing up and I like the direction it is heading.

BAD, it must have been pretty cool listening to Bailey call people out.
