Places to Ride Info, Please Read.

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Okiewan---------------------

We should put together a list of the places we are all familiar with, tracks, trails, whatever. Please add the info in this thread. Example, provide as much info as you can.

If we can get enough entries, I'll make a database that will allow members to comment on the facilities, update the info, etc. There are track databases out there, but they aren't kept up to date and don't allow people to comment, I think we can do it better. Seems this would be useful for all of us.

personal experience: The Keenbaum's are good people, and they've had this place open for many years. Very cool layout, only one jump where you really gotta commit, the Creek Jump, because you actually jump the creek. The Four Stroke Nationals were held here twice. Sometimes dust is an issue, and bring your own shade.

trailmap : http://files.dnr.state.mn.us/outdoo...ert/sitemap.pdf

Website- http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/ohv/iron...bert/index.html

Admission- FREE!!! with a registered off road vehicle.... they DO honor other states registration

Information-

from the website-

About half of the site is mineland, including inactive iron ore pits, ore stockpiles and tailings basins. The landscape has been dramatically altered by the extraction of iron ore, creating sizeable lakes, ore stockpiles, overburden piles, tailings basins and impoundments. Much of the mined area has revegetated naturally. The northern portion of the site will contain the majority of riding.

The Gilbert site also has a network of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails throughout undeveloped portions of the site. These trails provide access to natural features (e.g. lakes, wetlands).

Sand/mud drags
Observed trials
Multi-purpose event area
Motorcycle races
Hill climbs
4x4 rock crawl and obstacle course
Tough-truck competition

From memory-

This place offers almost any kind of riding you can imagine, hill climbs of every skill level, mud bogs, trials areas, open fire roads, tight single track, sand pits, gravel pits, rock piles, 4-wheeler trails, scenic overviews, a smallish MX track, training area, picnic area, bike wash area, all contained in a HUGE fence (they currently have 3,000 acres open I believe (the webistes info is dated), and they are adding more as we speak)... You literally CANT get lost in here despite it's size... great signage....

4 wheelers, monster/rock crawler trucks, and cycles are welcome... there are seperate trails for each and some combined

Although you can ride a very large chunk of it in one day, you really need at least 2 days to get the chance to take on all it's challenges.... while you're up there you might as well check out Big Aspen trail system in Britt MN too!!! it's nice... there are also endless other trails around the area... it is pretty rural.... nice comfortable lodging at Giants Ridge Ski And Golf Area not 5 miles away!!! (I'm told the golfing is great there, but I'd never know because I'd rather be riding... LOL)... or plenty of camping nearby..

Posted by: Old_CA_IT_Rider---------------------

If there is any way to put in a map front end and links to area maps for the trails this would be a great resource. I'm trying to find out enough about GIS systems to pull all of the map and OHV roads data together and allow people to add GPS info to it. Most of the listings I find on the web have descriptions but not maps.

Posted by: NGE---------------------

I added maps to my post

Posted by: nikki---------------------

Oh man.... I could add at least 30-40 tracks to this thread..... I think a riding area database of some sort would be awesome! :thumb:

Fourth gear wide on a '02 YZ426 will get you over! It is safe though, it throws you up more than out, the landing is about 40 feet above the takeoff and about 20 feet out. The first two times I tried it I clipped the edge and almost went over the bars. So, on the third attempt I held her wide and leaned back! No good! Missed the lip, bike was passed vertical(a la backflip style), landed on , ran over by friend jumping next (blind landing)
This sport rules!!!!!!

4th gear pinned on a 426????
so thats how you guys are doing it.
no WAY man! ill take the wuss route to the right.

There are actually quite a few places to ride general offroad/trails/singletrack now.
This huge offroad forum is the most inclusive list I know for general off-road places, of which there are tons now, (most ~1000acres each), but they also allow 'couches' to 'ride' there, too, so I recc' that u go deep enuff into the sticks to escape them...:
http://www.texasoffroad.net/forum_p...Cat=&PHPSESSID=

There are some more that may not be in this forum, like Boykin Springs in Zavalla. This was once excellent trail riding, but now it is only fair, tho there are still miles and miles of trails in the Nat'l forest. Stop in at Ross Motosports in Lufkin, buy something, and then ask them for the latest...

To you dudes who live near here, I saw a small RV Park/MX track sign beside US Hwy.84, south of Palestine. I stopped and looked, but it was winter and he had not mowed. It looked decent enuff to try if u live in this area. He had a few contoured tables, etc. Could not see much from my truck, tho. Red dirt, super-shady parking.

Directions : From US HWY 82 at NOCONA turn NORTH on HWY 103 (Clay St).
Go 5 (five) blocks and turn WEST on HWY 1759 (Pine St).

From the Red River Dirt Riders Website :
Terrain Overview : With over 2500 acres of riding trails, there are lots of different choices for your riding adventure! The riding varies from single track through tight woods, to deep sandy open areas, to Rocky Hills and lots of Flatland. The terrain is challenging and lots of fun. Riders can expect to improve existing skills on all types of riding surfaces. There is no lack of exciting areas to try and enjoy!
Personal Experience : Great place to ride. There are some bike swallowing soft spots along the creek, but other than that the trails are almost endless. The terrain is varied enough to offer some nice hills and drop offs. There are many great places to stop and rest that look out down the length of the Red River.

MOTOLAND---- KINGSBURY INDIANA

"When we first started this business I remember talking to Rick about it and listening as he would describe his ideal track. What it would and wouldn't have, doubles, yes; triples, no; woops, not unless the bikes create them, and so on. What I didn't hear was talk of the Mom's & Dad's, Grandparents and Aunts & Uncles. So I spoke for us all and Rick listened. Motoland is so very spectator friendly. If you are like we were, dragging three little toddlers around just grab a wagon and come on in. This track is designed to get Mom out of the pits too. I mean who wants to sit by the camper ALL DAY LONG. Who wants to see there child ride by a few times every couple of minutes. With the three spectator decks and the vast infield, we hope Motoland will be considered a great spectator track.

Getty Karrle a friend and pro rider who stopped by recently to check it out said " You have one sick track here, Rick".

We had another pro, Robbie Conklin, come by for a ride and he told us "I have NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE IT".

That's just what we were after, to be different, to EXCEED your expectations.

Danny Mitchell who has been helping us out at the track, and is also the guy doing all the sideways jumping in the photo section of our website, said, "You've got to see it to believe it". We think so too.

Then I received this wonderful email............................

"I came from Crown Point today because all my riding buddies said this track was excellent. Man were they right. .................... The sand is the perfect consistency, and that is like the endless lap. I'm bringing the kids next week so they can try out the Pee Wee track. I love this place. I'll be a regular customer.
Best regards
Troy Keiser"

The Track is located in KOP which stands for Kingsbury Ordinance Plant. It started producing shells, cartridges and mortar rounds in 1941 for use in the European and Pacific theaters of World War II. More than 13,000 acres were set aside for the facility. By May 1942, there were more than 20,000 employees working at the site. The small towns of Kingsbury and Kingsford Heights were created to house KOP workers. After the war ended in August 1945, the plant began closing but it was briefly reopened in 1951 due to the Korean War. In 1965 the land was deeded to the state of Indiana by the Federal General Services Administration.

" When I first saw this land I was awestruck by the history of it. Decomposing barracks and munitions buildings doted the 43 aces making the site unappealing to the eye and useless to the average spectator. I saw potential, I saw the buildings covered in dirt, I saw the water lines waiting to be used for hydrating a track, I saw MOTOLAND.

So last Spring I purchased the 43 acres and began construction. With the help of my boys, Richard, Michael and Nicholas and fellow motocross enthusiasts Perry Stabler and Randy Gordon, Motoland was born. I have been so fortunate to find in my life people who share my vision and love for the sport of motocross, people who just want to be a part of something so desperately needed in Indiana."

Rick Hollaway

MOTOLAND............RIDE IT !

2 practice tracks 1 pee wee track 3 observation decks 12 bike wash decks indoor sign-up 4 + minute lap times concession stand

camping watering system drainage system 750' of under track tunnels

denotes amenities completed. Any unchecked items (s) are still a work in progress but will be done by July 1.

Mission Statement

Our goal is to operate a motorsport club and racetrack where
motorsport enthusiasts and fans alike can come to ride and spectate
in a family-friendly environment.

Welcome to the site

Where do you live?
What brand do you ride?
What kinds of terrain do you ride?

We will try and hook you up with some folks from your area. Check out the SoCal Wrecking Crew forum for opportunities to hook up with some fellow DRNers in your area. I'm certain they can help you out with suggestions of where to ride.

7500 acres, 200+ miles of trails, elevations from 1500-3300 ft, no entry fees or stickers.

Harlan County has it all from easy to extreme, mud to rock, to mountain inclines to challenge even the best...

I own a campground here at the Putney Trailhead to this park and we have VERY few dirt bikers coming, very few know about it, but the ones we've had the past two weeks say this IS the best place they've ridden. For info about the park go to

Anyone know of tracks or trail areas in or neighboring NJ like in New York and PA? This state keeps getting worse and worse. Parents are continuously trying to sew motocross tracks because of their kids getting hurt even though they have to sign a liability waiver. Apparently, though it don't mean a darn thing in NJ because tracks are closing or are now being run by the AMA, which means limited riding. Any info would be great. Ok, Just rode the SNF this weekend, and it was great! Granted this is mostly trail riding, but the views are spectacular. There are designated fire and forest service roads that you must stay on, but the map is clearly marked on where these are. The roads are rated for degree of difficulty so that novice riders don't get in over their heads. I encountered alot of jeeps and ATVs up there so you really have to be careful around curves, but it was not crowded at all like what I found at Hungry valley OHV park in Cali. Plenty of places to explore and a camera is a must! Breathtaking is the only way I can describe it. If you enjoy combining the best of both worlds (camping and riding), this place is a must see. Way too many trails and roads to explore in one weekend. You can get more info here:

ww.fs.fed.us/r5/sequoia/recreation/ohv-osv/ohv_info_and_routes.html

I highly recommend this place for some great trail riding and hill climbing. Have fun and be safe!

Stoddard Valley: California, just south of Barstow.

This is a large desert area (58,000 acres) that is totally open (you can ride anywhere, any direction, any thing). Outside of the 58,000 acres there are additional marked trails that go for miles and miles.

The terrain is very rocky with a few sand washes thrown in. It is very unlikely that you are going to find any wet conditions so you want to have tires suitable for sharp, jagged rocks. Carry water with you, it gets hot and dry out there.

You will find a wide variety of riding conditions. Hills that are absolutely insane. Trails that may not be quite so steep but can be very technical (think narrow, rocky, sharp turns, etc.) Roads that the buggies and 4WDs have rutted out to the point that you can get trapped in the ruts. Gentle trails leading through the scrub brush and over gentle rolling hills.

It is a great place for family camping. The entire area is open for camping, just park and enjoy. Go with a group, circle the wagons, set up your own little track for the kids.

It's free! No charge for admission.

It is a great place during the fall to the spring. During the summer it just gets too hot for my taste. The town of Barstow is just a few minutes away and they have a nice bike shop for when you break something.

Turkey Bay
Land Between The Lakes Located near Grand Rivers Kentucky.
Main trail with a lot of connecting trails. Lots of hills and varied surfaces. Great views of the lakes. 15$ for a weekend pass. 60 for year long pass. Camping is allowed for small fee.

I ride there almost every weekend when I can. It is a lot of fun and can be pretty technical and challenging if you ask me. Me and my buddy who rides a 4 wheel drive Kawasaki quad love to ride the blue connector trails that are not maintained and find out what knarly stuff we can get into. If anyone lives in West TN or KY then look me up and maybe we can get to ride. It is not too far from Southern Illinois or East Missouri either. Anyone from those areas that want to get together and ride as well let me know. I am always looking for someone to ride with and new places to ride. I am just getting back into riding so always looking to learn from others.

What he said...

Long story follows, summary is that I am looking for trail type off road riding for dirt bikes in NJ/PA/NY area that is free or really cheap.

I now live in central nj (ok, ok Ive been here a long time) but learned to ride dirt bikes in central NY (finger lakes farm country), and lukesh40 is right, there are literally 2 legal places for true off-road bikes to ride in NJ. One is Englishtown NJ (which is mentioned in this forum), the other is NJORVP (New Jersey Off Road Vehicle Park) in Chatsworth NJ (google it, they have an extensive website), though it is questionable how much longer that one will remain in operation. Englishtown is just a moto track (I hear, I've never actually been), but NJORVP is several tracks and miles of trails.

The problem is, both of these are expensive places to ride. NJOVRP is $50 a day and only allows non-members (membership is $300 adult) to attend on weekends (talk about crowded). Englishtown is cheaper but it is just a track. Maybe I'm just cheap, (ok I AM cheap) but I've been riding for alot of years and have never paid (at least not $$) to ride off road. Armpit of the USA jokes aside, NJ is still alot of farm country (it is the Garden state) especially below I195. Back in NY, you would just ask your neighbor/friends/farmers if you could ride on their land and most allowed it (their kids had dirt bikes too) as long as you didnt harass the farm animals or trample any crops. Not so here. Bias against bikers, liability, whatever. No Trespassing, Keep Out...

At any rate, my bike is a dual-purpose so I can ride on alot of fire roads and even county park trails since they allow licensed and registered vehicles. The problem is my kids. We have 3 acres that probably have more than a miles worth of trails cut in the woods now but they are bored with that. I have a truck and a trailer and can probably haul 5 bikes. I'd be willing to drive 1.5 to 2 hours for a day trip to anyplace that had miles of trails and did not want a fortune for a group to ride.

We're a quiet bunch, all 4-strokes.... So any place out there to ride....

Thanks for listening,

SnarksDad
