My 15 year old has been riding a 1996 KDX200 for about a year. Now he's getting into jumping and motocross and the woods bike just aint cuttin for him anymore (besides the headlight, handguards, taillight etc just isn't cool). I have an opportunity to pick up a 1999 YZ125 in excellent shape for a good price. Any issues with the 99 I should know about before I buy it? Thanks for the input.

great lil bike. still plenty of parts avail.
aftermarket parts are plenty as well.
When you say good price, under $2000 I hope.

Have fun,
Dave

Great bike. those things will really fly

Get it, it will suit him well

Sink the money into the KDX (front forks) and it will out perform the 125 in the woods and on track. Pipe, reeds, jetting and maybe a KX front end swap and goodbye 125. Oh and you can get a Maier MX style back guard to lose the tail light. A RM or KX front number plate will also fit on with small mods. If the KDX just wont do the 125 will still suit him fine.

I wouldn't sink the money into the 200 to make it something that it is not. I tried to do that, didn't work out. The kdx may be the best beginner bike and trailbike ever, but theres a time when you have to leave the kdx nest and move on to bigger things :whiner:

As KDXTODD stated, the KDX is not intended for the track. Yeah, you can modify the KDX to at least get you around the track in one piece but you'll be driving Miss Daisy as the rest of the MX bikes fly over your head. The mods you'd do to a KDX would make it moreless a KX. So if that's the case go buy a KX. I have a KDX and I wouldn't spend the money on the mods. Save your money for the YZ. I ride my KDX in the bush where it belongs and my YZ 250 on the track where IT belongs.

I'd hate to see you steered in the wrong direction and become frustrated with a KDX used in it's wrong environment.

Riverz.
