Hey guys,
I just bought a motorcycle and the parents are too nervous for me to keep it. I get nervous about being on the road too. We came up to an agreement that I could sell that and get a dirtbike. I have been riding my buddy's YZ125 and it gets me around pretty good. I want a 250 though because I can grow into it, and have the power when I need it. It also, I have heard, will run me less repair bills. What kind of 250 should I look for? I have right around $1500 give or take a little to spend. I am 6'1 150 lbs by the way. I will mostly be using it to have fun in the fields and woods. Please give me some suggestions!

Hey again,
A guy just gave me a call today about a 90 KTM 250 for $900. He said he just had the shock sent in to get rebuilt, and new nitrogen, the front forks were rebuilt, all new bushings and bearings on the chassis, new tires, new power valve. Does this sound like a good deal? It is my first bike remember. He said it runs really well, and I know one of his buddies, and he says the bike is good (this guy has been into dirt bikes for 40 years)

90 was not a good year for KTM's 250 or for any KTM model. KTM almost went bankrupt in 91. I have a 91 540DXC that I just sold recently. Main reason--parts were starting to be problem and forget about mod parts such as pipes, these just are not available anymore. Another odd thing was the Brembo brake shoes. They are clipped to the brake piston. No one makes these anymore, even KTM stopped.
Don't jump into the first bike you see. Shop around, the used bike market is flooded with good deals.

Try and get an enduro 2stroke such as a suzuki rmx250, or a kawasaki KDX200/220. Both are great bikesand more than enough for a year or2(Wish i could keep to my own advise though...i seem to sell on every 6months or so....OHH well ive got the Euros now)

Hey.
Now I am stuck between getting a 125 or 250. My buddy has a YZ125 and it hauls ass with me on it. If I am looking at either or, which years were good, and which brands are good. Which brands are bad, which years are bad? I would like to stick with something that is cheap to fix, and parts are readily available, and also aftermarket is available. I found out KTM parts are hard to find and expensive. KTM is outta the picture. Any help would be a lot! Thanks :thumb:

I would definitly go with a YZ250f if you can afford one.... A 250 has enough power to really get ya in trouble if your not experienced. Based on your height and weight a 250f would be the best choice.

$1500 won't get you anywhere close to a modern racing 4-stroke. As mentioned an enduro type 2-stroke would be a good choice. KDX, WR, RMX can all be had in your price range. KDX probably preferred. They run forever. Parts are readily available. They will hold their own against a 125 in a 'drag race' and putt along(or fly along) in the woods. A full-on MX bike would be fine too, but they can be more of a handful than their Enduro modded couterparts(not to say that a 250 enduro isn't a seriously potent machine!).

My 2c and all that jazz....

Blanc....I would hope you're going to hold onto those for a while! No big deal trading up every six months to end up with a Ferrari, and a Lamborghini!! Nice bikes!
