kips...what is it, what does it do?

I was unable to find this by searching...maybe I suck at searches...

Anyway, I'm reading stuff about cleaning it... I don't know if I should clean mine, or anything..

Will it add power, make it run better, smoother?

Anybody got pics of what I'll be getting into?

Any info, tips, or links to info is appreciated.

someone else will be more able to tell you how it works and why.... but I can tell you that you need a shop manual (Clymer?).. it will tell you what it takes to get it apart and back together.... and even has pictures!

Yeah, I've been watching ****, but havn't seen much for any but the newer ones. I've got a 91 model. I've been really pleased with it so far. It starts cold on the first crank, hasn't fouled a plug yet (several rides), and I got it for $600

If anybody knows the cheapest place to get the manual, I'm interested...

I didn't know this forum would block out the names of online auctions...I wasn't advertising, but you guys can figure out what I intended....not that it matters, any more than it was an online auction.

I havn't priced the manuals at the dealer, but I figure they're not cheap.

Doing welding for a living, I do pretty well with mechanical things...such as installing my own heat and air system in the house, rebuilding car engines, etc...

With that in mind, would you say that if I take the kips stuff apart that I'll likely be able to figure out how it works and what to do to clean it up?

I don't know that I will take the top end apart just to inspect it. This bike runs excellent, and was mantained very well. I just can't see taking it apart when it doesn't have problems. I figure if it develops problems, I will get in it and fix it...but I don't see the sense in getting into it now. If I were to get into it, I'd also feel it a waste to not bore it, get a new piston, ect... "while I'm at it."

The older E series KDX's (89-94) have documented problems with the left side KIPS valve teeth stripping. My bike ran "fine" before rebuilding the top end. During the teardown on my 89 for its top end rebuild, I found my KIPS valves were covered in carbon and the left side teeth well on their way to being completely stripped. The point here is that you can't completely determine the condition of the KIPS valves without actually checking them. A three dollar top gasket (or ginger removal of the existing gasket) and 15 minutes will let you check the kips valves and if necessary clean them.

Consider this extremely necessary if the bike is still using the pork barrel jetting that comes in all the KDX's stock.

As for your other question, its a fairly straight forward process to pull the top and check the valves. The parts diagram on buykawasaki.com should tell you everything you need to know.

So I'm correct in understanding that this KIPS failure is a carbon buildup issue which can wind up stripping teeth and causing damage...not just poor running conditions?

As for boring the cylinder...I wasn't thinking much about it when I wrote that, but now that you mention it, I'd bet these cylinders have that kind of coating that can't be bored..but I forgot what it is called.

Since the taking the kips apart for inspection requires head removal, and you're not far from taking the cylinder off, would you guys suggest throwing in a new set of rings in there at the same time?

I appreciate your time and advice... and as for guessing my ability to work on this bike... well, I won't get offended if you underestimate me and give too much information

doesn't sound like too bad of a job. I'll remember your advice and probably get into it sometime in the next couple months.
