So what do you call it?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Check out the attached map of the United States.

What do you call that pop/soda/coke you drank today?

Do you match the majority of the folks in your county?

Link to large version of map

I have to ask ... What is other and what does the New England, St Louis Area, and Hawaii have in common?

If you load the link the map is linked to a county by county breakdown for each state.

16 months soda-free here!

Posted by: Okiewan---------------------

Looks like I still live in Chicago.

Posted by: Dede---------------------

this is funny cuz as i'm reading this thread I'm drinking a pepsi (yes, I usually just call it by what brand it is). Soda would be runner up. Interesting that that many people call it a pop. I've never heared it called that around here.

Posted by: KelvinKDX---------------------

I grew up calling it "pop" in Michigan. I tend to call it "soda" or "pop" depending on my mood and where i am.

Posted by: evenslower---------------------

Typical question, "You want a Coke?" Then you ask what kind, Coke, DrP, Pepsi, Root Beer.

Posted by: XRpredator---------------------

I call it a coke, cuz normally all I ever have is a coke. If I ordered a coke and someone asked me what kind, I'd look at 'em funny.

Posted by: GETMETOCA---------------------

Soda here. Typical Californian

Posted by: fatty_k---------------------

I think I speak for most Canadians when I say pop. I try saying soda sometimes, just to have me and my friends start laughing... Just sounds funny, like we're in an American sitom or movie.

Posted by: slideways11---------------------

It is called a refresco down here.

Posted by: gwcrim---------------------

I'll never forget... I dated a gal from Mississippi in college. "What kind of Coke do you want?" WTF.... it's a brand name for crying out loud!

What kind of Honda do I ride? A KX500, of course!

Me, I'm sipping on a pop as I type. Happens to be a Coke but I'm more of a Mt. Dew guy.

Posted by: CHIP---------------------

Down her we call it Coke. That's because Coca Cola tells us to. We have been marketed to the point where we mention there brand name even when that isn't what we are asking for. Could also be that we are so close to Atlanta(home of Coca Cola) that it is just a part of the culture.

What drives me nuts is when I go to a restaurant and ask for a Coca Cola(not coke) and they ask "Is Pepsi alright?". Well no, no it's not, if I wanted Pepsi I would have said...Coke!!

Posted by: bluerider125---------------------

hey guys want a coke?

yeah!

what kind?

Pepsi. DRp for me. DO THE DEW! coke. coke. dr. p

my friends are weird.

Posted by: Chief---------------------

If it had been 4 weeks ago I would have said Beer!

But now it's just 'soda'. Since thats' what I drink.

I ask for 'Pepsi or Coke' being the resteraunt will only have one or the other. I like pepsi more but when I'm thirsty I'm not too picky.

I knew Ohio would major in 'Pop' being born there and having relatives there, but I was surprised the trend changes in middle Pennsylvania.

No offense because I know it's your culture and I at least respect it, but in all honesty it almost sounds redundant to me. I don't just walk into a restaurant here and say "I want a pop." I'll directly ask for a Coke, Pepsi, Sprite, 7-Up, whatever. I just wonder how that came about?

Anyway...it's called POP! When they used to bottle it with corks and you opened one it 'popped', hence the name "Soda-Pop" (I still don't know where "Soda" came from) or just plain "Pop". "Pop" just makes perfect sense! Soda I can understand, although it just sounds so silly.

I happen to be drinking a Coke right now...the ONLY kind of Coke; Coca-Cola.

Ask for a "soda" in Canada and that's just what you'll get. Club soda.

Posted by: MXGirl230---------------------

Pop here in Michigan! When I lived in Georgia and Alabama it was Coke...then the "what kind". I was SO confused the first time I went to a McDonalds and they asked me that..I was like, uh coke. They were like ya what kind...took me awhile but I got it! when we lived in So. Cal it was Soda. Took me some time to figure out what a Soda was! They had no idea when I asked for a coke or went back to my roots and called it "Pop". My best friend at the time was like, ummm what's Pop. She still didn't get it by the time I moved away...
My dad STILL calls it Soda and we have been back in Michigan for over 6yrs!!! My grandma who is from the South still calls it all Coke. She has been back to Michiagan for over 40yrs!!! Oh well, I'm covered no matter where I go. Now, just have to teach Phil!

Posted by: Danman---------------------

It's called a tasty refreshing carbonated beverage. Other wise known as Coke :P

Posted by: gwcrim---------------------

Ya know this thread is a good reason to take up drinking BEER!

Posted by: kawrider---------------------

I'm with evenslower, It's a coke regardless of whats on the can. My Grandparents called them "Dopes" due to the coca content and the fact that people could get addicted to them back then!

Posted by: Spectre062---------------------

I don't match my area. Everyone in Colorado calls it pop, but I say soda. I guess the California hasn't worn off yet.

I was gonna say...my pop says "Coors Light". Huh, go figure

Posted by: ReBeLbOy---------------------

I think people should call it wut they want to call it.

Posted by: jmb86---------------------

Here down under we call it Coke. Since they changed Santa to the colors of Coca-cola the beverage has become part of our culture.
The real problem is that now when you ask for a 'Coke' the waitress smiles and asks, 'Regular, diet, vanilla, lemon, raspberry or any of those in the diet variety?'
What really irratates me though is that if you order a regular coke they serve it with a slice of lemon, which, incidently turns it into a lemon coke. So why did they bother asking if i wanted a plain Coke.
Thats just my opinion, and what would i know.

PS. I believe the term 'soda' comes from some relation to the sodium in the beverage that aids in the bubbling process.

Posted by: mx547---------------------

if you call it soda here, you'll get laughed at.

Thanks, Jay (there going to laugh at you), I call it soda 90% of the time and the others I use occasionally! It must be those trips to the Millville national lingering in my subconcious.

Posted by: Hogwylde---------------------

OTHER = carmel colored, carbonated, sugar water. It's what's listed on the ingredients on Coke, Pepsi, RC, and every other off brand "cola" on the market. Other also = "whatever cola you have on tap"

Posted by: Imho---------------------

"Soft drink" is the only generic term I can think of in Australia (well, Tasmania anyway).

Posted by: zero_cool2007---------------------
